Thailand-s Best Cave - Riding a Bamboo Raft! - Nam Lod Cave, Mae Hong Son - Mark Abroad

Visiting the amazing Nam Lod Cave, which is about an hour drive from the city of Pai - it also happens to be the best cave I-ve ever visited in Thailand. Part of the reason it-s so cool is that you take a bamboo raft straight through the center of the cave floating on a river, teeming with fish. It-s almost surreal to be within the tunnel, water flowing, fish all around you without any light but the lantern. Along with the bamboo raft ride, we also walked around the cave, saw some of the most important sights, and a series of ancient coffins high in a cavern. Highly recommended as one of the best cave experiences in Thailand! Scott: Before the bats leave for the night, 100's of thousands of swallows come into the cave to nest for the night. At one point you have clouds of swallows coming in at the same time clouds of bats are coming out. It is utterly amazing and a sight I will never forget. I rode the Mae Hong Song loop on a motorcycle in 1995. Pai was still a sleepy single street town that basically shut down at night. No night market, only a single restaurant with a bar open at night.

Hi Mark! Curious question. I know when you visit tourist locations, museums, and other sites you've said in the past that you have to pay based on the -foreigners- pricing as for Ying she does not because she is Thai. How does that work for Micah? Would he be considered Thai? I hope that's not an invasive question, it is meant in complete respect and my love for knowledge. (I have a daughter whose father is Black and Indian. She is considered to have Indian blood however because I did not register her when she was born she can never claim benefit of her heritage)

Love that place! Been there a few times, we go right through Pai (sorry; it's a bit too much of a tourist trap now) right to the village of Baan Mapa and stay at the Cave Lodge. Cave Lodge has tours of other caves in the area too and has great food + nice, little cabins right on the same stream that flows through Tam Lod. We've seen the bats flying out (+ thousands of Starlings flying IN at the same time) at dusk. Just a great place all around.

My wife is from a small village in Mae Hong Son and is part of the Karen tribe (not that -Karen! - -. Our house is in the city of Lamphun but that doesn-t prevent us from driving the several hours to get there for family, fun, food and rich culture. Mae Hong Son is a beautiful province with so much variety for possible adventures. I feel so lucky to live in this beautiful country and I appreciate Mark-s take on it. He presents it well.

Thank you for the great tour with out having to be there in person. If my kids went I think they would of ran off with the foul smell of the bat poop -. I miss Thailand want to go back again. Only been able to go there one once as a family and it was one of those tours, but it was good not the food though. When we could be on our own we would love to go in to 7 eleven or family mart to get food. Would love to go back again.

Mouth breathing is terrible advice. Breathing in through your nose humidifies and temperates the incoming air optimally for absorption and exhaling through your nose creates increased pressure in the lungs forcing my oxygen in the lung tissue. If you can breathe through your nose, you should be doing so

Ah! that cave reminded me of those kids who were stranded few years back which was an international outcry to rescue them. Thailand caves are dangerous and spooky. Beyond my comfort zone. The restaurant part was ok. Sorry but this vlog was a reminder of that danger.

Used to visit there a lot when we lived in Chiang Mai in the late 90's. Brilliant place and, as Mark said, the money you spend on guides and rafts goes to the community. The bats and starlings at sunset are other worldly. Well worth a visit.

Got the stalactites and stalagmites switched. The way I remember it is that stalagMITES -might- reach the top of the cave and stalacTITES cling -tight- to the ceiling.
Caves are super cool, I love getting to see them.
