My Singapore Chinese wife can squat like that when she is working in the yard. It hurts my thighs and back. I read a story about an American who was a POW in North Vietnam and forced to assume that posture, he wrote that once he got used to the position, he found it comfortable. It however he said, took a lot of getting used to. My wife finds it very comfortable.

How was the woods? Cold? Snowy?
Those pines look mostly like Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii, and likely there are some Japanese red pine (P. densiflora) and possibly Japanese white pine (P. parviflora) in there as well. They are maintained that way through constant trimming, otherwise would be full sized trees.

I agree that was the most disgusting creepiest thing I have ever seen in my life, every time I tell someone that I don't like stuff that looks like it has weird holes/textures they can't understand how I don't like that and I'm like are you looking at the same thing I'm looking at.
