Return to Japan Vlog Day 10 // Meeting Yoko Shimomura! Matthew: Regarding your desire to go ultralight:
You're not going to like what I have to say, but switching to ultralight backpacking gear is only going to solve part of your problem. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that more of your weight problem is with the camera gear than anything else. Your movies are excellent, but is it possible to reduce the amount of camera gear and still maintain the same production quality? Fewer and smaller cameras, fewer and lighter tripods, etc.
I know the struggle. I, too, hike into the wilderness with a DSLR, two lenses, and a tripod that all combined adds about 10 lbs to my pack. Unnecessary, yes. But I come out with great images. And I, too, am succumbing to the need to lighten my load. But as I do the math, an ultralight sleeping bag and tent will only free up about 5 or 6 lbs off my load. So I've been considering alternatives to the DSLR. I still haven't found a solution that I like, though.
-Matt
PS, Since you guys go out as a group of 3 or more on these adventures, are there any other pieces of gear that you can share among the group to split the weight? One stove, one pot set, maybe all sleep under a single shelter?
Good luck getting that weight down and I'm looking forward to more adventures.

7: 04, no they really are different in atmosphere, despite being major cities with a lot of stuff. NYC atmosphere is hostile, and makes you defensive or aggressive in order to be defensive. People in Tokyo are stereotyped as cold at worst, while in NYC people are stereotyped as sociopathic and sadly it is kinda true as people here kinda use and dispose of people like nothing. We got a lot more narcissists in NYC compared to Tokyo, and a lot more violence which makes you on edge when you're out in certain areas. When people say NYC is better than Tokyo, imo it's major cope or they've lived a luxurious life in the upper east side their whole life.
Night life in particular is a very noticeable difference between NYC and Tokyo, with Tokyo being a lot more comfy and relaxed though still exciting and interesting, while in NYC it's a lot more hectic like a crackhead and I feel like I'm going into a battle and have to be ready to defend myself against other people's bs behavior and aggression. The only place where this is different is maybe restaurants. The only place in Tokyo where nightlife is like NYC is Roppongi which is kinda intended to be that way, and it's not got a great reputation.

Just listened to the entire FF XV soundtrack, it sounds very -American- with lots of symphonic and choir stuff, definitely a lot different from Nobuo Uematsu's stuff. The only FF XV track I like is the new battle theme which sounds really cool with the signature FF battle tune in it plus some variations. I like Yoko's older tracks better. i. e. Kingdom Hearts, Heroes of Mana. etc. Sorry for the video game talk haha.

I still love/miss NYC, but Tokyo is so CLEAN and organized. Also, in general people in Japan follow the rules so diligently that it changes the whole vibe. Also the service people have a deep sense of responsibility to where they work, so they can be unbelievably accommodating and helpful. The wall to wall amazing food doesn't hurt either -_-

Michael, thank you and your wife for being so friendly and taking your friends in on this adventure. Your wife seems lovely by the way, and your kid is adorable. Maybe one day they come along on a camping adventure? Anyway, love the vlogs series, hope more is coming in 2017: )
