Eat Your Lawn - Identifying Edible and Medicinal Weeds in your Yard - AdventureArchives
video description
There were so much amaranthus growing in our area my father use to use it in his dishes. He would wait till they flowered though and I loved eating the tips of the plant. I forget the name of it but there is somewhat of a soup with a few these -foragables- (is that a word, especially amaranthus. He cooked it with taro stalks and root, and other veggies like squash flowers, and it would be an almost purple grayish soup. It had a nice tart too it, not sour, it was a savory flavor with a nice tart. It pairs amazingly with fried fish and of course rice! I miss these dishes and every time I visit home he cooks them!

So funny, I - Love it. The Wicked Slavetraders of the USA Government Commercialized Kudzu like Dandelions and tells everyone to Kill them as a Weed, yet sells them to their Wealthy Farmers to sell them to the rest of the World. Kudzu Powder & Arrowroot powder. You can eat the Dandelion Greens and flowers too. China has a whole Food Industry devoted to eating Dandelions often called Sow Thistles. In the USA, the Farmers market sells them for as much as Collard Greens cost, about 2. 98 a pound. Totally ridiculous, when considering the USA Government creates poison specifically targeted to Kill Dandelion Roots, yet Commercializes it to it's Wealthy Farmers like Bill Gates, and Blatantly Lies to everyone else. Sister Xia from Shanbei has the best videos on Eating Dandelion Greens.

I agree with you! Please share this video everywhere folks! These manicured lawns is what u call monoculture and is terrible for the ecosystem. I love to forage and so do the bunnies! If you use pesticides you are poisoning so many lives. It kills bees too! Plz stop using pesticides folks. And leave your early dandelions as it is the first food for bees! Also we should all be leaving our leaves too! It nourishes the soil below to make it more fertile and it creates homes for animals and beneficial insects for the ecosystem! I wish everyone could get excited about foraging and about nature because it is truly amazing that we are ALL surrounded by free food daily! It can truly help supplement our grocery costs too!

Your videos are always nicely done. Much appreciated as I learned 2 new plants. Your pictures were very nicely done to show the plants. I would add that if you are eating the sorrels that you don-t want to eat too much as it has oxalic acid which gives the sourness. We called wood sorrel sour grass and ate everything but the roots.
For my lawn I manicure front but keep larger area in back full of edibles. In addition I reduced the regular trees that were nice with some fruit trees that give much greater benefit. I can-t keep up with the figs. I want black cherry tree and hazelnut bush. Rather have a real fruit producing pear tree than a flowering only one.

How I wish I were confident enough to be able to identify and actually consume edible weeds!
I've looked at pictures in books and watched videos like this one, but I'm still very nervous about it. The only things I have actually eaten are wild chives and dandelion greens. Oh yes, I also ate a bit of purslane that happened be inside the package of my bagged salad. (It was not included in the ingredient list so I assumed it was there by accident) I went ahead and ate it anyway. Pleasantly mild flavor. I thought after doing that I would be courageous enough to eat the ones growing in my yard, but no.

You don't know why people remove them I'll tell you why. I was doing homework with my grandchildren a few years back and the public school indoctrination system sent a letter home or a flyer telling people that you should remove the dandelions from your yard at their weeds. That's why because we are misinformed by all of these trusted institutions institution should be the hint right here! get the kids out of public school give them a chance to live free and fairly with their self-esteem intact.

Why eat something that is bitter? Just because you can? Eating food should be a time of enjoyment and gain nutrition, without having to try and -suck up- to the bitterness of the food. I-ve ate a dandelion before, trust me, they are not -sweet- at all. Digging through the weeds in my backyard for food seems ridiculous, I-ll just grow a garden. I can ride a skateboard to work everyday but it-s just not practical to do so.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Personally I like my wildflowers in my lawn, but that-s me. And anyone who spends their time and money differently might seem like they are wasting it to us-but that-s their choice. As far as health and practical matters, it-s significant to mention that one of the best ways to control the spread of ticks-and therefore disease spread by them-is not to let your lawn get too high.

I'm trying to figure out how to have EDIBLE plants in my front yard without alarming the neighbors. My neighborhood has tiny yards that are beautified and useless for food. I am thinking of using planters with a couple plastic flowers in them. and something like peanuts or potatoes growing secretly under the flower. If it is done artfully, who would notice? If anyone knows a good strategy, please comment!
