Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Watch this video to compare the cheapest vs most expensive trip between DC and NYC! You'll see what its like to travel between Washington, DC and New York City on the cheapest bus versus the most expensive First Class High-Speed Train! Well start out by leaving Washington onboard the Megabus with tickets as cheap as one dollar! Youll see everything this super cheap mode of transportation provides. Or, I guess how little it provides! Well give you a tour of the bus, and the seat, and share some of the best sights along the way. On the way back from New York, well travel on Amtraks Acela High Speed train in First Class. Well showcase the unlimited drinks and meals you can expect (along with a disappointing surprise we encountered) At the end, well compare the cheapest vs most expensive trip between DC and NYC and give a verdict about which one youre more likely to see us onboard next time in this Bus vs Train comparison!

Hi Jeb, very nice content!
Don't get fooled by my nickname, I come from Italy.
In my opinion, $500 first class ticket for a three-hour trip are a scam. The interior is absolutely not worth the price.
For 149, 90 you can get an Italo Club Executive, for 430 a private four-seated compartment (Italo Salotto, for 245 a Frecciarossa Executive.
Less price, more distance. And you can run at 300 km/h. Too bad USA don't have a high-speed railway network and trains are so slow and overpriced.

I've been on MegaBus lots of times when they were active in Germany.
From Hamburg to Cologne for 5 Euros even if you book spontaneously.
Of course you get what you pay for. So don't expect much comfort. But it was enough to settle in and enjoy the 5 hour ride while reading a book, having a snack or listening to music.
The toilets were also always clean.
Compared with a ticket with the Deutsche Bahn which can cost around 100 Euros for a spontaneous booking, more than worth it!

I've taken both of these modes between Philly or NYC and DC. If you have time to waste and you go at the right time on MegaBus you can get those $1 tickets. Just don't go during morning rush hour. I never use the megabus bathrooms. Amtrak feels like you sneeze and you're in DC. However, the value to me is not worth it on the Acela. Even the regular Amtrak train can get really expensive. I'd rather bus it to DC n spend more ) on my accommodations when I get there.

You will never get us on another MegaBus or its competitors. Train costs more, but so worth it. I would MAYBE do Greyhound. Between the Megabus breakdown we endured. confusion on where to get the bus in NYC on some random corner away from EVERYTHING, buses running late, dirtiness. and last trip we took. driver dozing off on the NJ TPK. never again. When we rode it (and this was 8 years ago) the fleet and drivers were overworked.

Jeb what you didn't mention in your video is that the regular AMTRAK from DC to NYC isn't really much slower than the ACELA. The quality of the experience, seats, bathroom, etc is very good and the cost is A LOT lower. There's something else too. YOur bus looked empty. So you didn't experience the full joy of that mode of transportation. The train is a lot more quiet, sane and spacious. Great video!

Amtrak is definitely a better value from DC to Boston and as long as you book your tickets in advance or at weird times. Ive gotten my roundtrips in that corridor anywhere from $50-$100. Anywhere south of DC its not as good and slower than just taking a bus or driving. I really hope they expand Amtrak and make it faster all throughout the US because it definitely has a lot of potential.

4: 08 this was odd to see. Not the traffic, but traffic cause of an accident. There is ALWAYS a slowdown between that exit and the next one going north. A mix of a lot of merging traffic and people not being able to keep their speed cause the highways turning always makes a slow down. It's weird to see traffic be there for an actual reason for once.

Cool video. Here in South Florida a high speed train ticket from Palm Beach to Miami is about $60 round trip.
But, there is a good chance your train will kill somebody in their car on the tracks.
In which case. The hour+ drive turns into several
Hours of sitting on a train in hill they investigate the all
To common fatality.

I was able to score a $1 ticket from NYC to Toronto 5 years ago. I went just for the heck of it. Total it was $10 after fees and reserving a table seat. It was also the last time I took a bus since the ride was painfully long back and forth

When you were on the megabus I noticed that you were behind a Peter Pan Bus I travel Peter Pan audio video coaches when you that way As for megabus I ll be on one going Milwaukee to Baraboo in the near fututer Please give our love to Susan

Megabus UK has improved massively in the last few years. Theyre far better than National Express now. They dropped their UK to Paris/Amsterdam/Brussels routes but theyre bringing them back competing directly with Flix.

The Acela used to be worth the price; however, the train cars are really starting to show their age to the point where the Northeast Regional trains are just as comfortable with many of the same perks as the Acela.
reply

Jeb,
A bit unfair to judge bus legroom when you elect the front window seat. Of course theres no legroom, as you have no seat in front of you to place your legs under. Otherwise entertaining, worthwhile review!

For people in MD or VA, I recommend the Vamoose Bus from MD to NYC. Prices start at $40 similar to Mega Bus avg price, but the seats are larger and have free Wi-Fi. I had a very comfortable trip.

Seems like Amtrak doesn't mind advertising that menu and selling tickets with that menu as a selling point before pulling the old Supply train issue excuse as to why you get a hot dog.
reply

Pret A Manger is the BEST! I worked onboard for Amtrak and ate there often. Of course the other option is Amtrak's NE Regional trains which aren't that much slower and a LOT less expensive.

14: 42 so were not going to talk about that military vehicle headed most likely to a police station in order for the police to pretend they are tier one operators against the public
reply

Au bon pain is better, I still think of a warm ham and cheese croissant I had at the port authority bus station in Manhattan like ten years ago lol
-also yeah bus bathrooms suck

reply

Note about the $1 fares in the UK we had those same adverts on Megabus coaches and were banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA. Because those fares barely exist.
reply

This is a misnomer! The bus is, not, the least expensive way to travel from DC to NY when you consider how much the US spends on highway construction compared to rail.
reply

As a european, its kinda weird how much you guys pay for high quality, high speed railway. And its also kinda weird how little there is availible and how limited it is.
reply

For most of America it doesn't matter if they punched you in the face when you got on the bus BECAUSE A $500 TICKET IS FOOD FOR A FAMILY OF 4 FOR THE MONTH.
reply

When I took the mega bus, there was a sink to wash your hands, and the bus was full when I went. The day you guys left you picked the right day.
reply

Awesome video as always. But the question is why anyone would go between these cities other than to leave the other. but that is another topic

It's a shame that the US doesn't offer anything but Amtrak on the East Coast. After watching these videos, I don't think I'd ever want to go!
reply

Jeb, could you please give the audience a warning before showing the bathroom. I enjoy watching your videos while I eat. lol (Im being fr)
reply

If you order your tickets far enough in advance, regular Amtrak NE Corridor tickets can be had for about $30 one way between NY and DC.
reply

I personally love Amtrak more because theres more breathing room and its less claustrophobic and its a faster and more relaxing journey.
reply

for comparison Tokyo to Osaka via shinkansen is about 110 Dollars one way takes 2h30m. via Bus it takes 8 hours and cost 45 dollare
reply

I see absolutely no reason why bus bathrooms cannot be cleaned after each trip. They are a shameful thing.
