Forget all of the hate comments of the new terminal. This terminal is what everyone has been waiting for for over half a century. The designers didn't just focus on now but on years and years from now. People say that the convenience of a short walk was ruined by the new terminal's size, but the size of the new terminal ensures no congestion and backup. The shops and restaurants (most of them) are not what people are used to, but they just have to open up their tastes a little bit. And hey, a new Delta Sky Club! We haven't seen an airline lounge ever since the 70s layout! The restrooms look amazing as well. I'm not so sure about the mixed-gender bathrooms but it is something i have to get used to. The art is what really stands out. The representation of KC through sculptures and paintings is amazing. Oh, but what about the fake fountain, they should have put a real one in there? Imagine the black mold and the maintenance costs in the terminal. Besides, the LED's on the fountain artwork do represent a fountain's movement and glitter. Lastly, I know there have been some traffic hiccups during the first few weeks, people just have to get used to the cell phone lot and everything will be alright. KC got the airport it deserves!

The new airport is such an improvement! Now you get to walk as much as 1/4 mile from your arrival gate to a single baggage claim area for the entire airport. Then go outside and wait an hour or longer for your ride to work their way from Paris Street Cell Lot along with about 200 other cars also going to pick up their people. Wow! This is so much better than then short walk to the separate baggage claims and the near immediate curbside pick up from your ride. At the old airport, if you weren't ready to be picked up curbside, your ride could use a thru lane to circle back around when you were ready to be picked up. There is no thru lane at the new airport, (except to leave the airport) so all rides just wait in a single lane to pick up their passengers. And of course some will just park at the curb until their passengers reach curbside which compounds the traffic backup problem. It's just a mess. Of course you can have your ride go to the parking lot and you can carry/drag your baggage to the parking lot where they are waiting. That's better than curbside like the old airport, right? What a poorly designed mess it is. I miss the old airport.

I appreciate your enthusiasm. Good to see the modernization of more airports in the USA. It's been long overdue. LAX conceptual design theory was similar to this airport. It was about getting the passengers as close to the plane as possible. That was when LAX was also just one story. Though LAX did a better job executing the design. The concourses and terminals had more space and passengers got to the terminals via tunnels with moving sidewalks.
Of course LAX suffered from the same issues once more strict security requirements were instituted. It wasn't until the addition of the second level in 1984 did things get better. However, the horseshoe design was also ultimately very limiting in many aspects. I'm sure, as you know, LAX has been going through a huge multi billion dollar renovation for the last several years and still has a few more years to go. Hopefully, everything will be completed before the 2028 Olympics.
Part of LAX's renovation and expansion is finally adding an automated people mover that will connect to the rest of LA Metro. Does this airport have some kind of train connection to it? Thanks.

I know it was your job to downplay the old airport and highlight the new airport but I didn't ever experience any of the issues you brought up. People don't come to airports to eat and shop, they come to get on a plane. It was literally never crowded because people that arrived could get out as fast as possible so nobody was in the way or waiting around. There was no need to have a separate departure or arrivals level. There was little congestion because of the design. People were able to get in and out of the airport so quickly there was never a build up of cars. Lets not forget that the people in the KC area voted the new airport down over expanding what they already had several times until they basically overroad the decisions and built it anyway.

Theres more people living within 5 miles of downtown Overland Park than within 5 miles of downtown kcmo. Johnson county Kansas GDP is higher than Jackson County Missouri. Ive never actually been on a plane but Ive seen people off/welcomed people in MCI/KCI airport so many times. It always made me so excited to experience the real airport experience there some day. Sucks that I wont be able to in that terminal, Ive created so many wonderful memories there.
Good news is, Im going to Europe this summerMy first airport experience is going to take place in THIS airport and I could not be happier!

He just read what the developers said was the reason we needed a new one. For 50 years you could pull up to the gate and pickup or drop off 100' from your gate. That was fantastic. Thus guy needs to talk with people who used it hundreds of times not just make sit up.

However, it was pretty outdated and didn't offer much to travelers. The new one looks great.

Wow, that is a beautiful new terminal. Thank you for being there on opening day. To deliver it in such a short time frame, ON TIME and WITHIN budget - puh, that puts others to shame. (specially Berlin. 16+ years extra and unknown bn euros. )
What I specially find cool, is that the heritage of their old terminal has been kept in a functional way. Thx for keeping your eyes sharp on the little details.

The new airport is inconvenient and boring as heck, a carbon copy of 1000 other gray airports modeled after railroad stations. The art is bland, the trek is long, the water in the restrooms is boiling hot, and the last time I was there, the moving walkway was out of service. Pure pork barrel. And whose idea was it to put a departures board in front of big plate-glass windows so you can hardly read it?

Im just curious to know how many of these restaurants and shops are still going to be in this new airport a year from opening. I flew out in April 2023 and by looking at the menus on the restaurants there I cant believe how high price some of the stuff was. I hate to see what it would cost for a family of four they got stuck on a layover there to go to one of the restaurants to eat

Having flown in and out of the old terminals previously for various trips, I had the fortune of flying out of the new one a week after it opened for a work trip. And I have to say I love it. It's a much welcome improvement over the previous design. It actually made me excited for my return trip home to KC. Now I'm looking for excuses to take more trips just so I can enjoy it more.

Born in KC, went to Seminary there where I met and married my wife who was in Medical School. So we have flown in and out of the old airport dozens of times. It had its challenges but man was it nice to get off a plane with just carry on and have you pick up ride 2 min from the jet bridge at least in the era of cell phones. I moved to KC for school in 1982 before phones and TSA

Ah, yes, the terminal no one wanted. As much as I love KC, we are not that much of a hot spot. We're Fly-Over country. The only people who stop in KC are those who live here. Plus the airport is so far away from KC, it really depends on your layover if you can visit the city or not. Most likely not.

Would consider going to Nuuk, Greenland sometime in 2024 to see the new airport they are building there to accommodate jet aircraft. Also go on the new Air Greenland Airbus 330-200neo to get to Greenland. I would love to see a video from there from you and Suzanne, please!

The MCI airport upgrade is amazing! I love the expansion of space within the terminal, actually restaurants to dine at, and the stores to shop prior to departing. I'm much more excited to travel home as the MCI airport reflects most of the major city airports throughout the US.

As a KC native who has flown many times, pretty much everything you say was a problem with the old airport was not really a problem. Because of short lines every few gates the security lines were always short and fast. Now security will take multiple times longer.

The new airport is a JOKE! Traffic was backed up over a mile to get into the area for passenger pickup. Took my son over 45 minutes to just to get to us. Old terminal is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better.

It is a nightmare for us locals trying to pick up passengers! Takes forever compared to the old design - and we get to pay for the privilege. Can you say government boondoggle? I'm glad you enjoyed it - someone should.

I never thought the old kci bathrooms were that much of an issue. Could they have been nicer? Sure. But good grief, I've never spent more than 2 or 3 minutes going to the bathroom, never had to wait on a toilet.

Just so you know all those restaurants are KC 'inspired' but not local joints. I'll miss the old but I love the new airport and I'm looking forward to flying into KC this Thanksgiving 2023 with my Aussie family: )

I flew out of the new one a few weeks ago to Phoenix. I hate how spacious the departure area is. The acoustics were awful and any intercom announcements were easily drowned out by just regular conversation.

It's already falling apart. The security set up that you seen in the old terminal was put in during the remodeling in the 2000 - 2002 time frame. With 9/11, they had to make adjustments.
