Berlin, Germany: Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island bademeister: The idea behind that army which has a country was nothing but logistics and careful finances. When absolutism became the order of the day, Brandenburg ( the dukes of Brandenburg were one the seven electors who choose who was the next German king who was then crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by the Pope) was no exemption. The nobility was robbed off its right to cooperate in matters of taxation and lawmaking. They did not have to be brutally crushed as had been in France when they revolted against that policy, they were kept calm with privileges. They were the ones who manned the officer corps, they could still have serves on their lands. And the sons of the farmers became their soldiers. More than often a man would serve in a regiment that was commanded by a brother or cousin of the man on whose land his family worked as unfree tennant farmers. To keep the running costs down the soldiers were in their garrisons only for some months or weeks during the year. The rest of the time, when there was no drill and no manouvres, they were sent home to work in the fields and to get in the harvest, still under the same commands. That of course was only in peacetime. But the consequence was that the military and the economy of rural Brandenburg became one.

Frederick the Great was a king, not an emperor. And the Prussian army of his day, while large, and very large relative to Prussia's size, was not the largest in Europe. France, Russia and Austria each had larger armies.

Well, as far as I know, it was not Voltaire who said about the nation and the army. Reviewing names and credits is very important in such short video. However, the city is a very beautiful Icon of beauty.
