New Bushcraft Camp Construction - Site Clearing, Firepit & Bacon Breakfast

I headed to the new Bushcraft Campsite with the old nut to clear the site area, set up a temporary tarp and start building a new camp. Once the area was cleared we set up a pretty cool firepit area. Hope you enjoy - give us your ideas on what we should build here

In fifteen seconds and the Old Nut is showing you up with better toolsBring that broad hatchet back to camp. Deciduous. any Yew? Make a English Longbow. or a good fishing pole. Pick some fiddle heads to fry in your pan with the baconHead down to the garden center and get a big spool of jute twine. save some moneyWattle Weaving horizontal slats through an odd number of uprights. Makes fences and walls. can be made in a curve or as portable panels. Shelter. I would make a pavilion for starters. . four or six upright and a ridgepole. open sides just to have an open work space out of the rain. for shelter for an overnighter. Double A frame. the opening is in the middle with a shared fire pit. opposite ends are closed off. Easy to build. One ridge pole or sequence of ridge pole and one fire pit. Need to build that sawhorse. bring out the two man push pull misery whip (crosscut saw) fellowsCollect stones. Preferably from a dry location so you can make a hearth or other fire pits. In country with lots of creatures it can be better to have a cooking fire away from where you sleep. Build an elevated cache. a platform above ground level to keep creatures out of your edible stores. Dig a well beside your creek or pond so the soil does some of the filtering for you before you pump up some water through your filter. It is assumed that stone age man accidentally discovered copper metal using copper ore for their hearth. After a very hot fire or several very hot fires the stone age man noticed the copper metal in the ashes of his hearth. This lead to reheating just that and making small ingots. Jewelry lead to smallish blades. and then learning that more could be heated and poured from ceramic pots (crucibles) into forms (carved limestone) made larger tools like scythes, knives, and swords. Roadside bill board signs are made of Tyvek. You can get yards (meters) of it for pennies as the stuff goes to a recycler. Save money on tarps for shelters. Get some bill hooks and make a proper english wattle fence hurdle Tell your Dad the aluminum canteen cup is only for boiling. the cup conducts heat out of the hot water and the cup will still burn you even after the tea has gone cold. Get a nice thermal travel mug or a heavy ceramic mug. I like the insulated mugs so I get to have hot tea for longer. Talk your Dad into going to some yard sales and flea markets with you. Get your self some good steel tools

With the primitive flint to copper to bronze ages, Copper was found in mass amount as Malachite a green mineral of copper, this was formed into beads and other jewellery items, if memory serves me correct that native copper nuggets(small nuggets of copper metal) would have been hammered into very brittle shapes. Malachite was also used as a pigment and dye when crushed into a powder, and such used in pottery. pottery kilns could get up to the melting point of copper. i suspect that along with bonfires with copper rich rocks in them that pottery pigments could have formed small beads of metal from excess powder at the bottom of the kiln. from there it's a matter of refining the process. many early copper forges where simply holes dug into the ground and malachite powder sprinkled upon wood (later charcoal fires) then collected metal was then collected when it cooled. Later evidence shows us that this was then gathered into fired clay crucibles (late ones mixed with grog before firing, grog is a powered form of fired clay, to give the crucibles more strength. these crucibles were then used to melt copper metal into a liquid for pouring into molds.

in regards to metal tool usage. before the use of copper and bronze and all that, there is evidence they had gold first. so obviously mr caveman liked the shiny pebble and found he could hit it into a desired shape. this then spread around so loads of them were hitting shiny pebble into shapes. then another load of them found other metals which they could still hit into shape but it was much tougher which made for better tools. and then naturally, like everything, at some point it ended up in the fire, they noticed it was easier to move around/would melt and so they did this to any other things they found and worked out that mixing copper and tin made bronze which was better than the copper by itself and so on and so forthtldr: caveman found gold. found they could hit it into a shape. other caveman found copper, looked like gold so hit it and found it too could be made into a shape though it was tougher so made better tools and so on

HI guys. Been watching for a short time but I have done some major catch up over the weekend with the kids lol. Love the camp you have made. I'm going to pick up on a point you made. I cant remember what video, that there is a grey area between bush crafters and survivalists. Pretty much the area I think I want to build my kit around. SO with you being keen fishermen can you shed some light as to weather or not the Emmrod would be a good addition to a pack or is there better compact fishing kits out there that you would recommend? kind regardsGav

Loppers is the name of your first tool. Before metals, man discovered ceramics/building material. light a fire, fire cools down and leaves hardened surface. So now they have discovered fire as a method to produce materials other than food. Rocks were also showing signs of change / and so the experimentation of elements and fire continue. Steel is the result of experimentation with carbon and iron. How we got the metals and tools we use today is an amazing process that we all ought to know. Great site you have there.

the Derby family used a new type of reverberatory furnace, namely Abraham Derby and acted as a catalyst in the iron industry. The family built the worlds first iron bridge over the River Severn at coalbrookdale, called the iron bridge. This new method of melting iron was the beginning of the transition from Iron to steel. If there is handy water and clay, include some wattle and daub (wind break, fire reflector. You know you can get silicone lip protectors to slip onto your metal cup rims now, don't you? Kelley Kettle cups come with them, but they are available elsewhere separately. Or you could just saucer your tea. ;-) No dinos, Dad, but dire wolves, smilodons, mammoths, woolly rhinos, cave bears, cave lions, etc. Plenty of incentive to improve on wood and stone blades. Remember the bronze age preceded the iron age, but your query still applies.

First I'm 77 an American retired soldier with 100% disability. I've lived in just about everything you can imagine and a couple you would never come up with in a 100 years. For instance I and several colleagues lived over 60ft in the air in hammocks for an extended period. My suggestion would be a half and half. That is place that is half in the ground and half above. How you do the upper half is up to you and the materials on hand.

I can understand, sort of, that copper and bronze tools may have been an accident. You get get results from a large camp fire, the copper and tin would melt out of the ore and when mixed produce bronze. Bronze is fairly easy to smelt and cast, but Iron requires a blast furnace and very high temperatures, approx 1200 degrees C just to get the metal out of the ore, that can not have been an accident.

Primitive man, there is nothing primitive about our ancient ancestors, they invented the wheel, tamed fire, flint tools, smelted tin, copper, gold, silver and later iron, they made paints and pigments, wove fine garments of wool and linen, built monuments that are still standing today. If man can be described as primitive, then he is primitive now with his throw away, reliant on others society.
