Complete scenic drive on Shafer Canyon Road in Canyonlands National Park down into the canyon to Potash Road. We start at Island in the Sky in Canyonlands and ride the switchbacks down into the canyon on the narrow edge of the cliffs in this exhilarating and stunning and scary Moab, Utah area off-road ride. We did this trail no problem in a stock SUV and have seen minivans and even front wheel drive sedans along the way, but we would recommend full/all wheel drive, and a little bit of ground clearance is a good thing to have as well

Great video. One of my favorite drives.
The first time I drove this I started in Moab and came out the Potash road and up the switchbacks.
I was driving a four door Dodge Coronet. Late seventies early eighties.
I was in the roughest part of the Potash road and coming towards me was an old VW bus full of paying tourists. I asked the driver if I could make it all the way.
He said you got this far so no problem. Go slow and take it easy.
The switchbacks were no issue at all.
I seem to recall people cheering me on as I proceeded up.

There are stories here if one only listens. At 13: 17 and a little beyond is a white layer. It could be from a long ago extinct volcano or it could be from an inland sea. The red is from iron and one can wonder where did the iron come from and how did it infiltrate the rocks. I have a daughter that will never go here but oh the history of it's creation we could learn if we only took the time. Thank you for this one. It's a keeper for sure. :D

I made this drive in my full size F150 and I felt like I was going off the switch backs. Probably the most terrifying drive I have ever made. I vowed to never drive it again. I might hike it up and down but no way am I ever going back on that road.
Thanks for the great vid it gave me the shivers.

We did the Shafer Trail late this summer. We came the other direction. going up. The views are amazing. I'm not a huge fan of heights so a bit on the nerves for me. but well worth it. Jaw dropping beauty in every direction!

Very scenic. but there were at least 3 places in the road that appeared to be a bit unstable. like could go at any time. and to pull over on a hang off. no thank you, I"ll just keep going. but yes very scenic.

Stunning place! But gotta be careful on those winding roads, they look extremely dangerous, terrifying in some parts. Amazing video, anyway!

The inscription on the windshield of the red jeep at the end says it all. Thanks for sharing the complete route.
