Plus a lot of women have asked specifically about feminine hygiene and dealing with periods out there so if that's you, stick around till the end! have no idea why you don't wash arm pits everyday, put deodorant on and use body wipes for an overall wipe down every morning and before bed. Granted all the stink won't be gone because your clothes aren't being washed but at least you skin is cleaned daily. For clothes take a 1/2 ounce bottle of good smelling essential oil and put several drops on your clothes a couple times a day. authentic essential oil is very strong smelling, you only have to use a little bit and it lasts a long time. this will help cover up the smell and it does a great job repelling insects. I get the trail smell will still be there but it can worse or better depending on what you choose to do about it.

Toilet Paper roll: OK - this is how to maintain a roll of the valuable stuff on the trail and in your pack. Carefully remove the the tube center from the roll. This will pull the paper from the center of the roll but maintain the over all shape. Insert into a good zip lock bag for protection from elements and water. It never has to be removed from its zip lock anymore. Pull the paper from the inside of the roll when in use. Bury it deep with the waste. Stir the waste in with the dirt while burying. Put the area back to a natural look when done, please. Now your a pro.

Keep a good zip lock trash bag for all your waste while on the trail. Put trash in your pockets while walking. Care it in carry it out. Please. Nobody wants to see wrappers on the trail. Gum and candy are particularly common. Please, please don't be a slob. I've noticed over time that school kids and the young are bad about this. Do they not care? Or are they thinking that mommy is there to clean up after them? Learn this in school? I don't get it, it's like they don't care. Big Bend NP on the South rim loop is bad about this. Enough said.

Baking soda fused into a bar makes a very nice soap replacement. Crumble a bit off and dissolve it in water. The basic solution turns your natural body/hair oils into soap and helps cut the greasy/grimy residue. It also works well for toothpaste and neutralizes the acid produced from eating carby/sugary foods and protects your teeth. It's safe for the environment, too!

It is time for an updated hygiene video! There are a lot more products on the market these days. Lume is a deodorant that can be used everywhere for those who worry about stink (literally everywhere-feet, private parts, pits. There are menstrual discs now that are easier than the cups and toothpaste tablets that save space/weight.

I like to wear a thin silk sock under my wool socks because I seem to be prone to blisters. The silk sock not only prevents that but it worked well to wick moisture away from feet and keep them from getting as funky (both smell and health wise. They weigh very little and dry super fast after being washed/rinsed.

I got myself a Sea to Summit 5L Kitchen Sink half filled with water then topped up with boiled water and strip down pretty much and wash myself down. At the end I soak and wash my feet for about 5 minutes each, dry then sprinkle with baby powder and walk around in flip flops. A great way to end the day.

Menstrual cups are great, but don't wait to use it the first time when your in the great outdoors! Takes practice to use! A lot of women have a hard time using them, or just find them gross. There's a learning curve with menstrual cups. but many benefits to your body and the environment!

Gals! (And Guys! For those freaking out about Talcum Powder. there are certainly brands of baby powder made from cornstarch. Or just use cornstarch (maybe pre-mix with lavender oil or your favorite essential oil, as long as its safe for your body.

Johnson & Johnson powder has a huge class action lawsuit right now because it's been proven to cause cancer. Don't use that product. use a natural corn starch based product or make your own. It's easy.
