If I Hiked the Appalachian Trail Again
video description
Now, Zpacks Duplex. I like hiking with someone as a team to spread some weight. One GF was a close sleeper with me. So we used a Zpacks dual quilt. Same tent. Same cookstove. If she was cold, she always was, she got a base layer I didn't need and sleeping together kept us warmer. Used same firstaid kit. One phone. Overall it really saved a lot of weight. I still carried big things like tent and quilt. But she carried little things like cook kit and inflatable mats. Easier on us both and got our speeds of hiking more even.

Don't stress about weight. I would sooner carry 5 more pounds of tent, warm clothes, and a warmer sleeping bag than do without them. Getting cold and wet is not my idea of a fun hike. I like a lot of the things Dixie recommends, but her main criteria in most of her videos is packing light. That's fine, we can't bring everything. But having a warm insulation layer, a sturdy tent that keeps you dry, and a sleeping bag that keeps you warm and comfortable is worth the extra weight. Hike shorter distances during the day if the extra weight bothers you, keeping dry and warm makes the experience worthwhile.

Hey Dixie, here's a question. you frequently mention your friend Perk in your videos. did you two meet on the trail? It's really nice that you have a close hiking friend to share adventures with. history is everything with friendships. One comment on this video regarding total-carry weight. as you grow older, your joints inflame with less stress. I'm now 63, and light weight is critical for my knees, hips, back, ankles, shoulders, neck. if you're over 40, save more and buy the lightest and most waterproof gear available (DCF. if you are in pain, your enjoyment will be less (or zero.

You absolutely should. it is sooooo much better the second time around! Trust me, I know. Its so much better that I am going to see if the third time is better than the first two starting 32 days from now. when the weather has, more or less, broken. the race for shelters and campsites is not a concern and there are still enuff beginning thru-hikers to enjoy the trail with while not feeling that I'm walking among the crowd on the streets of NYC at lunchtime.

Once you have burned through your excess body fat that most people have it's time to switch to a high-fat, high protein diet. Fats and proteins are essential and fat is the densest form of energy and it works its way through your system slower, keeping you feeling full. Once you get the fire hot enough (your metabolism) it will burn anything, including Big Macs, no worries. I am not a through hiker but have cycled on tours of 5100 miles at a time.

And it would be a great idea of you to do it again. If I would have the chance to hike a trial a year it would be the AT every time. Anyways. It would be a great video to do describing which gear you would cast and pick according with what you are mentioning to the last (16: 19) of packing gear somewhere in between UL and HW to make the hike more comfortable. Comfortable hike priority instead of UL Thanks

I bet sooner or later on these long hikes you reach a section where you're high up with not a lot of ledge to protect you. In other words, you don't want to have a fear of heights out there. Also, you have to be brave to be out in the woods at nightfall. Even though you're pretty safe, those noises in the night can fire your imagination.

In my Scouting experience the foam pads are good for minor cushioning or if you are in warmer weather, but if the temp begins to drop they are basically useless. My family decided on one inflatable pad each, including one that is small enough for when one of us goes on a short (1 week) backpacking trip

I too am dehydrating all kinds of food. Mt House costs 9 a meal. It is so much cheaper.
I go to Mother Earth Stores and get the added proteins and other needed Supplements.
Starting doing sections but I think it may end up being more than the 3 States I have planed for;
AKA ROCKY

Did a 100-mile section hike from springer north, it was during the hot summer and it was drought conditions, water was an issue at all times and sometimes I had to haul 4 to 6 liters and ran out a couple of time. It was very hot and dry. Even the water sources marked reliably was dry.
