Regarding down, you need to wash with a soap and not a detergent. You can use those special products by Graingers or NIkWax (or other compainies, and for regular washing I would recommend that, but for the situation you were in, a one time emergency thing, using a detergent will not ruin your down. The key is that you rinse it really well, to get all detergent residue off of the down, shell material.

Montana is a real trooper. My friends and I had bed bug troubles last summer on our one week hiking trip in the Austrian Alpes, and some of us, myself included, really took a hit to our morale because of it. Glad ya'll found a way of hot laundering your stuff immediately. That's what we couldn't do, being in the mountains and all, and it was a real pain carrying our (partly) bug infested packs.

Looks like mosquito bites for sure in 1st photos. In Florida I get hundreds every year. Stayed at a grand hotel & got bedbug bites. horrified. even found 2 of them & put in a water glass to show hotel management. The bites are quite different. Since I'm and avid camper. I get red bugs ( chiggers) each spring. those bites itch to the point you question your sanity at night!

Bed bugs are one of those I guess. Sept-Oct in Bulgaria I got the WORST bites that went really blistery and sore at one point (could be small spider bites maybe. Sometimes there's just no avoiding them beyond maybe some kind of spray?
Nice tip with showering everything. For some reason rinsing my pack didn't even occur to me, but if it happens again I will try it!

It occurs to me that you appreciate those beautiful mountain and hilly landscapes even more because you've walked the whole trail and seen areas that maybe weren't as exciting. How do you really fully appreciate those amazing areas if you've skipped over the other parts!

Only effective way to kill bed bugs is VIA heat. if it's ever a suspension just bag everything and get it in a a dryer on high heat for a minimum of 4 hours, I work building maintenance in hospitality. been dealing with cases or bed bugs for years

I love these series! I'm 17 and i am planning to walk the camino to within the coming months, you really helped me to get a vision off how it will be. Just one question did you carry a drone? How did you make the air footage?

Renember: in the Spanish language there are just five vowels with only five sounds always the same sound for each vowel. You should always pronounce on Spanish the vowel e like the English sound for bed.

This is why it is never permitted to put rest back packs on the bed or chairs. We rest them down many times during the day and they collect and transporter all kinds of dirt and bugs.
