Weird Changes Long Distance Backpackers Experience travel: I haven't hiked since the late Eighties, long before there was an easy way to share experiences with others doing strange things, but upon re-entry back into the world, from either a multi day hike or a multi week canoe trip, I experienced several of the things which you've mentioned here. The smell of civilized people was off putting, especially perfumed women. I'd hate getting on elevators a while. But the worst was the noise and raucousness, and the constant talking that people do. It felt like so much talk was made, not to communicate, but so as there would be no uncomfortable (beautiful) silence.
One thing that would be very palpable to me for a week or so, which you have not mentioned, was my feeling that when I got back to civilization, that people look at other people, but if strongly felt like they didn't really see me.
And the world has gotten faster, noisier and more frantic since then. Much more, I suspect. Time for a trip?

I use to backpack extensively back in the '60's, '70's and '80's so I; m familiar with what you are talking about. I was also, back in the 1960's in the Navy in submarines. On the older diesel powered, mostly WW II submarines, water was to a great extent rationed, (longer trips you used less water. So bathing was limited and people began acquiring an aroma. We called it eau du submarine. It was a combination of sweat, fuel oil, hydraulic oil, ozone, cooking odors, cigarette smoke and what ever else was around you. It permeated everything including clothing. Many women would not let their men into the house until they had removed all the clothes and they showered. Backpacking long distances is like that.

I was backpacking in the Cairngorms in Scotland years ago. I didn't see anybody for 5 days (hard to do in the crowded UK. When camping by a stream I was sure I could hear voices, but couldn't quite make out what was being said (the sound was on the edge of my mind, so to speak. Was it the mind trying to make sense of the 'white noise' of the water? Maybe this is where the classical idea of water nymphs comes from, shepherds alone in the hills for long periods of time, a trick of the mind.

The most special experience for me after a long distance backpacking trip, was sitting in a train with a hot cup of coffee. After putting up a tent every day while being exhausted and hungry, the feeling of a real, strong roof over my head, that fully protected me from the rain and wind, while not having to give that any effort at all, and coffee that stayed warm for minutes on end was magical.

During a long hike, crossing a asphalt road was getting more and more dangerous for me. The speed of on coming cars seemed to get faster and faster. Totally lose the sense the perception of speed that was faster than walking. My fastest hitch was of a car that almost hit me, because I thought I had plenty of time. They stopped to make sure they didn't hit me. Weird is right.

Omg the cravings where real! I had such intense cravings for a fried egg. Just a delicious crispy gooey fried egg. and at the end of the trip, I craved salt so much! I wanted to put bouillon powder on everything. I think it really shows what your body is craving! For me it was fats, proteins and salt!

After a while on trail I had more notice of clean people- their deodorants and artificial chemicals. I could tell a parking lot or civilization was ahead by at least 1/2 a mile just by that smell. .once back in the civilized world I never notice it.

My daughter hiked for 28 days straight in the Ansel Adams wilderness above the tree line. No hot food. She said she took 8 showers over 2 days and still had dirt creases in the bend on her arms and legs.

Shower for camping. Heat up 1. 5 Litre of water, pour into plastic bottle, put 5 holes in cap and now you have a SHOWER! WET DOWN, SOAP UP, RINSE OFF. You don't have to go 7 days stinking into town Dixie.
