Update On New Zealand, The Pinhoti, Gear Testing, And Some Personal Bad News Pam: Dear Dixie, you have my deepest sympathy in the great loss of your son/pup. I am glad you referred to him as your son/dog because that is exactly how I felt about my collie Sammy because he was so dear to me. I am now 57 y/o and I lost Sammy in 2008 when he was 14. I am well aware people think its crazy to love an animal so much and God forbid you compare it to the loss of a child but love is love, the loss was deep and it effected me greatly. Obviously you are a sensitive loving soul who appreciates all life as I do (Anyone who rescues a wasp from drowning like you did) I guess what I am trying to say is that I understand your sorrow and its impact and I am very sorry for your loss. I wish I could say time heals all wounds an you will get over it but I never did and there is still a hole in my heart but it did get much easier for me over time. My faith was key because I truly believe I will see him again one day when my time is done and I know that one day Sugar Belle and Hank will be wagging their tails running to see you again too.

Yes! The Pictured Rocks Trail is amazing. Such spectacular views! It changes every year and you'll want to get out there and see it as the landmarks are deteriorating and falling into the lake (Crazy looking at pictures of my dad and his cousins backpacking at Chapel Rock in the 50's to my pops and I at chapel rock in more recent years and just seeing how much of it has disappeared. So get there while you can still see it! The trail is great, lots of wonderful people. It is really highly traveled, so unfortunately there are a lot of bare roots, but yes, highly HIGHLY recommend. oh! and. be prepared for flies. Seriously, their fly warnings don't do justice to what they do--and bug spray doesn't work, leave it at home. I usually have luck after mid-late October with avoiding the flies though: )

If you do go up to Michigan, stop in Hocking Hills State Park in SE Ohio. We were just there a few weeks ago, and it has some of the most amazing rock formations this side of the Mississippi R. (IMHO. The Buckeye Trail passes through the area too if looking for a longer hike. Make sure you go to the shorter trails in the area, in addition to Old Man Cave Trail, which is the most popular. Several times I felt like I was in an enchanted forest in some of the valleys, with fallen, moss covered trees, large ferns, etc. and half expected a fairy to fly by at any time, or see a Troll under a bridge.

As a YT'er, you should be taking time off here and there to keep yourself fresh! As far as needing to take time off. well, without you, Dixie doesn't exist, and this world loves you enough to not even question where ya been to! My condolences. family is family, and I'm sorry for your loss. As far as where to go next. CANADA! We'd love to have you, and the only thing prettier than our trails is your downhome personality! I've been a Sub since your first step on the AT, and personally thank you for what you have brought to our outdoor community! GET OUT, STAY OUT! - LTE.

I am so sorry for your loss. We lost our pup that my husband and I rescued before we were married when he was 7 and he passed away almost two years ago now. We were blessed with ten years of memories and love w him. He was the only dog my kiddo knew her whole life, he was our first baby as it were. it was very difficult and we all still have our days we are missing him more than ever. and I have found this week almost calling our new pup we rescued his name a few times over and it has been years. hugs girl. They are always in our hearts.

I'm so sorry for your loss - without a doubt, your dogs loved you and felt fortunate to have you as their mom. As for trails, try the Tahoe Rim Trail. The only permit you need is for the portion thru Desolation Wilderness (which overlays the PCT, actually - so maybe you can skip that part. Thru hikers are not subject to the quota for Desolation, which is cool. Finally, very awesome that you're testing more budget-friendly items for people who might not have a lot of cash under the sofa!

The Picture Rocks trail in Michigan is amazing! It has amazing views and during the fall months, the colors are amazing. You could also do a portion of the the North Country Trail throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Any trails throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are worth the adventure. Truly an amazing area to be in. Born and raised there.

so sorry for your loss of your dog. so tough, hang in there. ive been taking care of feral cats/kittens, and get them fixed and hopefully adopted. it hurts even to lose one of them. Hank was truly loved by you, as much as he loved you. he's running wild and free with no pain in doggie heaven with a big bone in his mouth: )

Dixie I am so very sorry about Hank, he was such a ham and I know how much it hurts to have to say goodbye. If you decide to come up to the UP in Michigan give me a shout. Anything past mid October here and you are risking some cold and snow. Maybe the North Country Trail in the future?

I'm so very sorry about your loss. Idk how I'll handle such a thing and my first forever forbid we rehomed toward the end of his life. I pray by some miracle we go together. My prayers are with you. I'm sure another companion will find you soon.
