Abandoned Kitten With Infection Found On The Camino de Santiago And Saved!

I aim to get back to normal videos next week. Since I had to cut short a recent backpacking trip due to an emergency at home, I haven't been able to produce a new video. But I thought it'd be cool to post some of my favorite animal/nature encounters from my thru-hikes this week so they can exist as their own clips rather than in the middle of longer videos. For one, there are probably quite a few subscribers who haven't seen them all, and two, I kind of want to make it easier for myself to find them, too! I hope you've enjoyed them so far. This will likely be the last one for now. In this clip, while my sister and I were walking the Camino De Santiago, we heard this kitten in the bushes and tried to do whatever we could to save it. I know it's not exactly what most people would call a nature encounter, but it felt like one to me, especially since the Camino is so much different than the other trails I've done. I've never been a cat person but little Alabama melted my heart

You did the right thing. On my first thruhike of the AT twenty years ago we found two tiny kittens that couldnt have been more than a week old, we found an adult dead cat further down the trail and we assumed it was their mom. Dave put one tiny baby on his shoulder and I put the other one on mine and we hiked two days like that until we cam to Unionville, NY where we found someone who would take them. What was amazing was those two little things rode on our shoulders next to the shoulder strap and never tried to escape or get away. Its the only time Ive ever hiked with a purring baby just humming away next to my ear. It was hot, humid and the most wonderful experience I ever had on the AT.

OK, that did it. I am a Patreon. I was saddened to hear of your pets death. I lost mine in June and it still upsets me. When there is nothing more that we can do to help, we somehow feel that we should have been able to do more. Our loved pets don't live long enough, but you gave this kitten it's life. Nature is not kind. Without it's eyes it would eventually be a meal for something. Someone will have the opportunity to love this kitty.
I used to work on the waterfront in the shipping industry. I have tamed feral kittens. This one seems especially sweet.

I can tell you have a very kind heart. but to change the subject. when you are hiking and you come to a lake or stream (in the U. S. on the CDT, PCT, or AT) can you take a bath with biodegradable soap (with clothes on of course? As you can tell I have never hiked but I did work in Saudi for 20 years. but we lived in mobile desert camps with trailers.

I would say you saved its life. if another animal didnt prey on it a bird like a hawk, owl would probably eventually have gotten it. Now you have the joy of your hike and the joy of the knowledge that some little, helpless being can, hopefully, enjoy a full and happy life. You cant ask for more than that in life. May it come back to you one day.

Reishi Mushroom powder? You mentioned it helped you to sleep on trail in a recent video. How much did you take to get to sleep? I bot some from Amazon. Tried 1/2/ teaspoon last night with added Melatonin, but not much help. All suggestions very gratefully accepted! Something about getting 72! LOL! Thanks so much!

I have become a big fan of yours and your videos. Your fun to watch and your kind nature shows in many of your adventures. At 76 years young you have me walking more and working towards a 10 mile or more section hike here in New England. Keep on hiking!

The kitten was probably abandoned by its mother because of the infection, I've heard to many cases of this happening before.
I'm glad you guys took the kitten with you, because it definatlly would have died if you hadn't.

Hi Dixie, Love your videos. Was just watching a Timcast video and looks like Patreon is in big time legal trouble due to their liberal politics and dumping folks and may go belly up. You might to want to look elsewhere.

Bless you for helping that kitten. I found a kitten just like that and it was the motivation to start Critter Haven rescue. We kept the first kitten that motivated us and she is beautiful and healthy to this day

OMG. the kitten meowing drove my cat crazy, she kept trying to get inside the speakers to save the kittens. She was very distressed. Poor kitty. Thanks Dixie, for both the video and the kitty rescue.
