I remember when I first started backpacking (In the late 1970's. The gear was cheap mostly because I hadn't educated myself yet and plus there weren't many outdoor specially stores around. Times have certainly changed.
My first tent was a floorless A-frame and my pack was a Himalayan 3/4 external frame that was so small I had to hang a day pack on it just to hold the basic stuff. The sleeping bag was from my Army days as were my boots. And of course all clothing was cotton usually denim jeans and a flannel shirt. I carried a single burner strove that used the 16. 2 ounce propane fuel tank and made coffee with a percolator.
In spite of all that, the seed was sown and backpacking is still a major part of my life. Gear is always evolving and because of that I can still get out and do the long hikes. Thanks, as always, Dixie. There is always something to learn.

Hey Dixie! I've been watching your videos and am excited that you did a gear video like this. The cool coincidence is that I have those same cascadia trekking poles. Although I feel as though the screw for the lengthening lock becomes untight after a while, I feel like as though it's an easy fix and they've been handy for down here in Florida when doing longer hikes. I'm trying to do more overnight backpacking as soon as it gets cooler down here and I'm excited that you're doing the whole Florida Trail this year. Personally I'm planning to do the Ocala section of the trail this winter and would be thrilled to see you by coincidence. Thanks for what you do and happy hiking!

Did my heart good to see you back on trail talking sweetee talk to the critters. Dixie is not meant for quarantine!
One bit i would have liked but maybe your batteries couldn't handle it is to take us through each day. Show us making camp, dinner, breakfast, breaking camp each day. On a short trip like that could you have done some cool non standard trail meals? You've also talked about Bush crafting merging with backpacking. maybe show some merging.
Or, ignore me, you're the expert and what you do is fantastic! I will not be surprised if National Geographic reaches out for you to be a insect photographer. your shots belong there.
Thank you!

Another great vid! Hiking Georgia in August with budget gear. Wow you are one Tough Dixie Chic Thanks for demonstrating that you don't have to have the best or priciest gear to get out there and getter done. Took it all the way to the tried and true budget Yota! Spending less on and only on the material that matters allows you to work less to pay for it, and regret less of the time you spent working instead of experiencing the memorable moments in life!

Dixie you re always a joy to watch and produce great content! I ve been hitting small sections of the AT here in GA like Woody Gap to just beyond Preachers Rock and Cedar Mountain. And most recently a loop from Byron Reece (near Neels Gap) through Freeman up to top of Blood Mountain and back. Needless to say you re an inspiration and it s cool to follow your footsteps through the green tunnel. Keep on trekking!

Just watched this with my daughter and she is so excited, she's 7 and watching your videos is what got her wanting to go hiking with me. PMT is the only trail we've gone to so far, in a few years I'll start taking her to the smokies with me on some longer hikes. Thanks for putting out such great content, and can't wait for this pandemic to pass and everything to go back to normal.

I got a bit emotional about my last dog today. My truck broke down and a neighbor stopped to see if they could help. It was hot, (I live in the Southwest desert. They asked if my dog was going to be OK waiting with me for the tow truck. I had to put her down last June because of her medical conditions. I just about recovered and then seen your video. We do miss them.

You did a masterful job composing this video! Everyone who knows you notices the trademark intricate detail of little bugs and flowers- how you notice them I have no idea. You must have eyes like an eagle. The homemade part is coming through with the inexpensive gear- so just about anyone can do it. Great job on this one!
