Backpacking Starter Kit For Your Dog Queue: My current dog loves to go hiking with me. She has been going a couple times a month on shorter day hikes and sometimes camping were she sleeps in the hammock with me.
About ten years ago I rescued a dog while doing a fish survey on the Ogeechee river. Some one had abandoned her next to a dumpster near a boat pull in site. She saw me and the other person on the other side of the river and jumped in and swam across to us. She was a little emaciated and we could not figure out how big she would be. My father ended keeping her and now she is the cutest little furball, and my fathers best dog friend. She will sit in your lap and if you have to hold her or she will slide onto the floor. I can't imagine why anybody dumping her like that, she had no behavior issues at all.

Our family has been involved in Aussie Rescue and Border Collie Rescue as a foster family for more than 20 years. Needless to say, we've had our share of foster failures. They were just part of the fabric of our lives and attached to our hearts. Our rescue dogs have come from shelters as well as from extreme hoarding situations. I currently have a 1 yr old border collie named Mesa who will be my hiking and traveling companion. She's also my sheep working partner and will be going to trials across the country to compete as my partner. I recently had midfoot fusion surgeries on both feet, leaving me with at least a year or more of rehabilitation as the nerves heal. As I slowly begin to hike the trails again here in Colorado, she's accompanied me and revealed an amazing spirit to enjoy nature as much as I do. She's learned to sleep in a tent and stay with me on trail, usually on leash, but occasionally enjoying a refreshing creek or alpine lake. She does not have a pack or boots yet, but would love to have this so that she can carry a few of her own things. I'd love for her to honor Hank's memory in this way.

Our girl Lulu was a Craigslist dog. 40. We love her like a child. She s 32 lbs of pure joy in our lives. She s always good to go for whatever we plan. Movie night? Awesome, let me wedge right in the middle for belly rubs and hand fed snacks. Hikes? You betcha, I m on high alert for rabbits and bigfoots, listen for my bark, I ll warn you of their approach! Cleaning day? Crates the best place for that. When you finish I ll put my hair back on the sofa, I know you miss it. Going to grandmas? My favorite place, she s always dropping snacks for me! Bedtime? You got that big old bed, but I know you like me planting my face on yours, and no, I don t mind. Lol. 40 and we got all that that, what a deal!

My wife and my sister were conspiring against me. My sister was getting a puppy and apparently my wife told her to get two and she would convince me to take it. So I get a call one Sunday and my sister needed her kennel back that we had. We take the kennel over to her house and she has two puppies. She says they were in a bad situation and she felt bad just taking one and she couldn't separate them so she got two. My wife and sister then try to persuade me to take one of them and of course I can't say no to an adorable puppy. About a year later I find out it was a ploy the whole time.

I have two puppies, one was a rescue, Ellie, a black lab mix. We went to an adoption event on the second day figuring there would be no puppies left, she was actually just turned in that morning. She ran right up to me and jumped in my lap and gave me kisses. I couldn't say no. Our second dog Nala, isn't a rescue but also isn't from a breeder. She's a pit / lab mix. Both are so wonderful and I've been wanting to get either of them on trail with me but I don't have a pack for them. I'd love to win and share in that experience in honor of Hank. :. Good luck to everyone.

We adopted my dog from an animal shelter full of pitbulls. His name was Loco, meaning crazy in Spanish. We were warned that he was too hyper and that his name really fit him. My husband, who is Spanish, saw him and immediately said I want him. He saw that Loco was likely not going to be adopted and wanted to bring home the least wanted dog. We changed his name to Rocko, and he is the biggest, sweetest baby. He is loyal, cuddly, calm, and truly the best dog! We love having him with us and look forward to having trail adventures with him as well

I actually got my English Mastiff named Chief 3 years ago, and part of the reason I got him was because I had finally escaped a very abusive relationship and was in the process of getting some kind of protection from this guy that tried to kill me and wanted to finish the job. My depression was bad and I was alone and scared. I got Chief when he was a puppy and knew he couldn't do much to protect me but it really gave me someone to talk to and he is my best buddy to this day. Now he's 150 lbs and won't let anyone hurt me.

I got my 6lb shizzzapooo from my daughter who unfortunately had to move from a house to an apartment and could not take Sophie with her, so I grandma adopted little Sophie. She now weighs about 7 lbs. Sophie is going to be 6 years old in September. Sophie follows me everywhere I go. I have taken her hiking here and there but I am a bit scared that she will be a snack for a mount lion or coyote. I am not interested in winning the dog pack as my pup does not go with me on every hike. I just wanted to share my pups story.

Went hiking at the hot springs here in Mexico. The first time I saw Charley I thought he belonged to the people who ran the park. Fast forward a few months and we are back at the park. Charley followed me on the hike and then played down beside me when i had lunch h. When i got back I to the entrance i asked if she belonged to anyone. They said no please take her and i did. Charley is a handful but i wouldn't change it for the world. We have been hiking and walking the trails of Mexico for almost 3 years now.

I m planning a fall trip with my rescue. He s 12 now. He s been blind from congenital coloboma in both eyes but retained enough vision to get by. Now that he s older most all vision is gone along with his hearing. I took him for a 4 day Allegheny fishing trip last year and he loved it. Hoping to spend more outdoors time with him while I can. I have a bungee leash that I used last year but would love a chance to get him a good pack and boots. Thanks Dixie and congrats.
