Our 2024 Ineos Grenadier Finally Arrived And It's As Strange And Epic As I Thought!

If you thought peak suv happened in the 1990s, think, again, because I think we truly live in the golden era of the off-road suv. We have entries that have been resurrected from the grave. Like the Ford Bronco. More options than ever to choose from in the United States. Thanks to new models like this inos Grenadier, right next to me. And yes, this is our inos grenadier. I actually bought it yesterday and drove it up from pasad before any of you ask in the comment section. Yes, I got hit on my head. No, that did not cause me to buy a grenadier. Why then did I get this? Well, there are a few reasons. The first one is, obviously, it looks totally cool. We get some classic land rover Defender going on here. A little bit of Mercedes Benz, G-wagon in the hood. And then certainly some post-war French sedan, maybe Catrone, going on with this grill that protrudes from the headlights, auxiliary off-road lights here. And that vshape in the grill. It looks like nothing else on sale in North America. And I think it looks epic. So, clearly that was a reason. Then there's the engineering behind the design of the grenadier. This is also like nothing else on sale in North America, but the closest thing would be a Jeep wrangler, because, like the wrangler, this has solid axles in the front and in the back, not just in the rear, like we find in a bronco or a land cruiser or a Mercedes Benz G wagon. Those all have independent front suspensions. So, this is much more of a purpose built off-road vehicle that's are focused on off-road capability. And they were willing to give up a lot of on-road civility that we find in a land cruiser or a G wagon or a Ford Bronco. This is going in a very different direction. Then, there's the story, which is also pretty cool. Jim Ratcliffe, the CEO of Inos, is the richest person in Britain. He loves defenders. He wanted to continue building the old body on-frame defender. When the new model came out. So, he approached, jaguar, land rover said, hey, can I buy the tooling and everything to continue building it? They said, no. So he met some dudes in a pub and he designed the Grenadier. And that's, interestingly, where the name comes from too. This is named after the Grenadier pub in Belgravia. And that also is kind of interesting, because not only is this the only vehicle on sale in North America, named after a pub in London. It's also the only vehicle, named after a guy who is a card cheat, and then got beaten to death because he was cheating at cards. Because that's where that pub got its name from way back in the 1900s. Both the design and the engineering of the Grenadier are a blend of ancient and modern. We have full led headlights on each side. These are auxiliary lights in the middle. They are only available when you're in the off-road mode. The high beams and the low beams are in these outboard, circular modules. That's mainly due to varying light regulations around the world that limit the number of beams you can have shining forward at one time. There's some slight arrow curtains going on here to help reduce pressure up front. So, there's a little bit of a nod to fuel efficiency. Down here. We have a full-metal bumper, which did surprise me, because this design, part of the reason we have this protruding front end is because of pedestrian crash, safety requirements in Europe. So, I'm surprised that we were able to get full-metal bumpers like we find in some other off-road vehicles. These are replaceable in sections as well. Obviously, we have full undercarriage protection down there, and a whole lot of cooling going on in that front end, especially for a vehicle designed and engineered for Europe. The dimensions may come as a surprise to you. This is notably bigger than a four-door wrangler. It's nearly 6 in. Longer, over 2 in wider, and nearly 7 in taller than a wrangler. Some of that is because of European pedestrian crash regulations.

Alex, surprising that even though the Grenadier is modeled and almost a direct copy of the Land Rover Defender, and in the same price range as a current model defender, you spent almost no time mentioning the Defender and zero comparisons. All comparisons seem to be directed towards the Toyota/Lexus and Wrangler/Bronco vehicles. Not sure why, given that many will be cross shopping the Defender. I'm a little dismayed by the appearance of quality in this vehicle. It seems that many of the options are basic level and off the shelf add ons. Not really well integrated into what should be a luxury vehicle. I'm curious as to how Ineos evolves this vehicle over time. It seems that it is more suited to the hardcore 4WD enthusiast and not to those who want to occasionally off road, but still live in a more urban setting. Would love to know how you think this stacks up against the current Defender!

Great review. You really cover a lot of information with a natural fluid style.
See how you feel about the steering once you forget about it. It’s slow, not imprecise, so if you make a small correction, just let it do its thing, don’t get impatient and give it more, that just leads to the back and forth with the wheel. It actually holds its line very well and requires little intervention.
It does self center, as illustrated in your split screen driving. It needs you to drive it back about the last quarter turn but that’s really what a driver should be doing anyway. My RX-8 had great steering but didn’t self center all the way either. However, low speed tight car park manoeuvres do require more effort to spin it back to center and you need all the lock you can get in the Grenadier so that does suck a bit.

I have a theory and you may be able to figure out whether I'm correct. It goes like this. When Sir Jim was turned down by Land Rover to buy the factory line for the Defender, he turned to Mercedes Benz and actually bought the factory line for the G-wagon W-461 which ceased production in 2022. It was also a solid front axle design engineeed by Magna, which had recirculating ball steering which was not very well liked by journalists. He of course also bought the factory in Homberg, France and had the factory line moved there. I expect the Mercedes conditions of the contract were that he make the vehicle look British and not recognizable as a G-wagon derivative. Much the same as Chrysler did with so many old Mercedes platforms.

I own a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon currently. I've been following the Grenadier extremely closely. There's so much I love here. There's also a lot of stuff that the industry solved long ago and makes you scratch your head make it here. Also some features just seem unfinished. Overall though. I hope their order books stay full. I think this will improve greatly over time and with aftermarket support.

What an enjoyable and entertaining video. Yummy, Boxy, Green, Off Road Champion of a purchase. An exclusive, niche offering with distinctive and appealing features to be sure. If you have the time and inclination to compare the capabilities and features with TFL, that would certainly be a special treat for eveyone. That boxy profile sure looks nice. Excellent work Alex.

I test drove one. It's cool, but the price, it's just a little bit too expensive that beside the space advantage compared to the Wrangler, nothing I can't think of that Wrangler can't do or better than this. Wrangler is more refined and polished than this, while being 20-30k cheaper and better offroad (at least proven) if you are ok with the pentastar engine.

I would like to see a video of a Grenadier in a parking lot. How much space does it need Can you park between cars in a busy parking lot
Also, I would like to see it driving in a town/city.
Another thing. Could you demonstrate/visualize the ground clearance Maybe drive over some measured cardboard pieces or something.

Alex, After the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in disappointment/debacle, is it safe to say you will be choosing your own long-term vehicles from now on With Ineos introducing another solid front axle 4X4 to our market to compete with high end Wranglers, Toyota really has no excuse to deny us their real deal 70 Series.

I must admit, I’m truly glad you finally wore something long enough to cover your jeans pockets. Otherwise great video/update as always. An Ineos dealer just opened shop down here in St. Pete. It hits so differently when see in person. _Best lifestyle vehicle of the year maybe_

This vehicle is not a SUV, theres nothing sporty about it like a 4runner, Bronco or even the new Defender. This is a proper 4WD UTILITY WAGON. Just like the Old Defender was and the Land Cruiser 70 series, not sold in North America.

That looks like the perfect blend of g wagon and defender. And the bmw b58
Imagine this with the Lexus 5. 0L v8 and 10 speed or the JLR 5. 0L supercharged v8, or the FCA 6. 4L 392 HEMI
Any of these combos would be epic

I would love an explanation of what all these differentials and lockers do, and examples of when you use them. A great off-road video would be awesome. This is a wild weird vehicle. Its Wonderfull.

Nice to see a preview of what I ordered just a month ago! Green as well with the off road option and back half roof rack. I look forward to a real factory off road vehicle with lockers both ends!

The best thing about Alex is that he lacks any detectable amount of pretension in his reviews. I doubt he has any at all, and that is a refreshing quality in this corner of the internet especially.

I appreciate how (relatively) low the hood is on this vehicle. Shows that we need updated pedestrian safety regulations here in the US so we dont get things like the chevy suburban et al.

That BMW shifter really sticks out like a sore thumb. it looks out of place. I wish Ineos would have used a shifter design of their own that fits the rest of the interior.

Its so funny how everyone completely dogged the mpg of GX 460 being(16-18, when there are multiple rigs that are 6 cylinders getting the same or worse mpg than the 4. 6 V8.

British Racing Green Lucas Prince of Darkness included A meetup with TFL. That would be fun. I will be interested in the future updates of this new addition to the family.

Congrats, Alex! Enjoy it! It’s ideal for your property, and future content.
Whenever it’s time to replace your tires, consider getting a set of the AEV Saltos wheels.
