2019 Nissan Altima - Forget About The Maxima

Nissan pulled out all the stops with their latest Altima. Whether you e looking for the latest in turbo engine technology, loads of standard features, or affordable all-wheel-drive, the Altima has a great deal going for it. Yes, you read that right, AWD is now an option. Unlike other midsized sedans that gave offered AWD, Nissan decided to make it a 1, 350 option on any trim including the base model which rivals the Subaru Legacy for AWD base model value. Nissan decided to toss in their latest safety gadgets, CarPlay and Android Auto, and some next generation zero gravity seats for good measure. The result leaves the Maxima in the dust and provides an interesting alternative to the Camry and Accord. Can it beat the Japanese competition? Maybe, depending on what you e looking for

Im going to offer a few general thoughts about your review/reviews: Constructive crit all the way. First, too much info in too little time, too much over-detail to digest/assimilate. we cant even think that fast. You and Sofyan ought to take a speak slower Berlitz curriculum. your product would improve greatly. As for your reviews. you cover so much minutiae but you dont even find time to mention whether the vehicle includes the overhead pull/grip handle on the driver side, which is a helpful aide for senior citizen, car guys/gals, big omission on many makes/models, like your Altima here. Second, you cover so many hypothetical comparisons in the segment (Accord this, Camry that, etc) but you dont offer a lot of comparatives with the Mazda 6 (except the turbo motor version) and between Altima and big brother (Maxima) which happens to be my challenge. whether to continue to be a Maxima guy or whether to go for the new technology, Greener (4-banger) Altima. Your review didnt really help with informed reasoning for that caption heading. For instance, does the normal aspiration 4 require premium unleaded or only the turbo 4? The Maxima 6 is a high compression motor which implies high octane, more expensive cost of ownership. The AWD option. Is it a meaningful, productive investment or is it just snob appeal? AWD automatically adds curb weight, adds to maintenance/repair costs, and changes the handling characteristics, not necessarily in good way. What do you make of it in the Altima, good, bad or otherwise? For most folks, AWD is a snob appeal item that their friends throw around for faux shaming purpose. I buy on substance and real world considerations. The seat evaluation you offered is helpful. I spend a lot of time on the road in the car and keeping comfortable and changing position is everything. Maxima seats are premium in my book; do Altima seats compare? What about a strict comparison on basis of noise level or DBs in the car. 4 bangers are by nature louder, rougher, and noisier under acceleration. And, do you really need to go after the turbo for expressway entrance gallops, changing lanes, etc. with the natural aspiration motor? A lot of folks also purchase strictly on looks, and Nissan has been doing a better job with styling on both Altima and Maxima than Toyota and/or Honda. Mazda, possibly, not so much. Altima cries for maybe a separate video just discussing the pros and cons and reflection, not an exhaustive review and rehash of 15 different trim levels and pricing niches. Alex, youre a good man and chocked full of factoids, but maybe less is more, given some of your target audience, which presumably includes all demographic multiple age and driver enthusiast segments. Id think of trying to narrow your critique, and focus on the big picture stuff. Youre so much better than the punk reviews, pick up the model from their local dealer, and then cry about using plastic knobs instead of metal on the HVAC system controls as their gripe. We want more adult reviews, thank you.

I dont think they borrowed that engine from the q50 - same tech but missing two cylinders. Q50 twin turbo 3. 0 is pretty quick. Also, not sure about all these CVT haters. Ive got a 16 Accord v6 touring and a14 Maxima SV. Ill take my CVT any day. Is it a little strange at first? Yes. But when I tell it to shift gears (whether real or not, I get the effect instantly and with ghusto. More than I can say over many of todays automatics. Ive also driven some newer Acuras and I think they share the same Honda shifting funkiness. Starting to think some of the CVT comments come from people who have just heard how bad they are - not from people who have actually driven one. For something with such a horrible reliability record, there sure are many of them still on the road. (Edit - apparently, I get my Infiniti models mixed up. you may have referenced the qX50 which may indeed have the 4 cylinder. The q50 has the vc turbo 6 which is pretty amazing)

ALex, as always, well done. but a few points. you did nt do your usual and get into to steering-handling-ride critique very much. we d really like to know more in that sense. also, important point: you did nt mention that they are taking away that glorious electro-hydraulic steering and giving us the ole video-game-console steering system. A HUGE mistake as that system was so real and old school, the likes we shall not enjoy again: (one other thing. i disagree with the sentiment against paddle shift on CVT. yes, counter productive for economy but for spirited driving and sportiness its just fine. makes a huge difference in the SR from the SL. a lot of fun. you get the best of both worlds: sporting driving when in the mood and economy cruising when you feel like taking a nap under auto pilot. what i would like to see here is user programmable paddle settings now that would be really cool.

One thing you missed is that the 2. 5 is a new engine, same displacement but mostly new internals. As well as the CVT is a new design. I bought a Platinum AWD and love it. I dont know if the CVT will be better and DID get extended powertrain, just in case. Hopefully dont have to use it. You hear all the stories, but then you hear Hyundai has this problem and Ford has this problem and Toyota had a ton of recalls several years back. Make your own decisions, not what the trolls have to say. At least 70% of powertrain failures are due to lack of maintenance or owner abuse. Bet half the people dissing the CVT havent even driven one.

Love what Nissan is doing. I would consider just about any model they have out right now 2010 and up. I love my 2011 Maxima. If I ever downsized, that Sentra is like a mini maxima these days. Even the same steering wheel I have. I have to say the dealership near me has been really good and honest so thats a plus. And Im glad they depreciate quick A used fully loaded Nissan is CHEAP. You can get Maximas between 10k and 20k depending on used year and youre getting a comfortable, powerful car. Thats a 38k car for so much less.

It is elegant looking on outside as well as the interior except the cellphone compartment and USB ports under the center console; In previous models. there was a polished lid to close the ports compartment which added a posh and clean look down the console. In 2019 model every ports are exposed including your cellphone which gives a dirty look and will be a miss. I would really appreciate if there were a lid in 2019 model like in the previous models

Alex, it is always going like this: this car feels nearly like Mazda6. But then, when you drive Mazda6 everyday and get into Accord, Camry and presumably this Altima, all these nearly becomes not quite like. Also, Alex, at which level you get folding mirrors? I remember test driving Altima 8 years ago and to get folding mirrors would lead you to top trim. This is a no go because my wife is not safe going into garage without folding mirriors

Started my car research with Nissan, just because its the closest dealer to my house. Kind of falling in love immediately, havent even test driven yet. Current car is a 2006 Sonata with a medium size spoiler (which is apparently rare) so I am looking for something similar. Roomy, sleek, slightly sporty look. The new Sonata is so ugly, not sure what they were thinking. This car is really nice though i wish the spoiler was bigger.

Doesnt hold a candle to the Maxima in either the pizazz department (interior or exterior) or mpg. Gotta love the V6 of the Maxima Also, everyone and their grandmother will be driving an Altima. Should blend in well with all the other 4 cyl. family sedans out there. I prefer to stand out in the crowd and get WOWs when passengers settle in to the Maxima.

This car is no longer cool without the V6 or at least a 4 cylinder that can match its performance. Needs more power and AWD available on all trims. Good rear set leg room is about the only selling point, they are trying to give folks a reason to get the maxima over this so they are making it less sporty and fun to drive and more of a family sedan.
