2025 Nissan Kicks Review - A Solid, But Not Quite Exciting Small SUV

Looking for a small SUV in America You are spoiled for choice because there are so many solid choices. Want something outdoorsy There's a Subaru. Want a hybrid Check out the Corolla Cross. Want a 250 HP turbo Mazda. Low price tag Hyundai Venue. So what then does the Kicks bring to the party Well, that's tricky. It's well rounded, but aside from the style and comfy seats, it doesn't really stand out in any particular way. Is that good or bad I'll let you decide.

I own a 2023 Nissan Kicks SR with Premium Package in the extra cost color Boulder Gray Pearl and it had a few accessories like the floor mats and cargo mat and splash guards. Its MSRP was $26, 130. 00 I bought it new in October 2023. I love it.
Now the top trim loaded SR with Premium Package is in the $32, 000. 00 area. I know it has AWD, panoramic roof, larger engine, larger wheels, a new platform and added features but is it worth $6, 000. 00 plus more
When I go online to build one now a mid trim SV with front wheel drive and the Premium Package is more than I paid for my loaded 2023 top trim SR with the Premium Package but the 2025 SV front wheel drive has no 360 cameras, no primatex leatherette seats, no Bose audio and has only 4 speakers, no digital auto climate control, no alloy wheels (SV AWD has alloys, and so on
I am just curious of your thoughts. I know you liked the 2021-2024 Kicks SR Premium versions and want your thoughts on the value and comparison and is the significant price jump for the 2025 mid trim SV and upper trim SR worth it

This looks nice, has good safety ratings even in updated IIHs tests (very few other small suvs passed those tests) and is well-priced esp at the base end. But they had to add that Jatco CVT which is updated but they still seem to have a lot of issues on newer Nissans. Hopefully, if/when they merge with Honda, they can at least use Honda's CVTs instead and that'd add a lot of value to their products. A hybrid is also NEEDED at this point, I cannot believe they don't produce a single hybrid SUV yet here for the states. Side-note about competition: the Venue is a death trap compared to its competition, it's too lightweight in a world where an average high-volume mid-size SUV is close to 4k LBS. It likely would miserably fail the new crash tests from IIHS that uses a heavier barrier.

I test drove one (a base model) after months of waiting and was a bit disappointed. The ride was not very compliant and the steering lacked feel. The rear camera was so low res that it looked blurry as if it was covered in grime. The deal breaker was the rear seat belt buckles that was short and had almost zero give, so my kid (in a booster seat) couldn’t buckle himself in. I really wanted to like it and would have gotten the SR Premium. I ended up getting a Crosstrek Wilderness.

I’ll take it over the corolla cross every single day. The kicks is cheaper and better, a combo of which is usually rare. The hybrid is just not worth the compromise in the lackluster styling, subpar build quality and materials, dated tech, uncomfortable seats and q huge price tag. Considering the price differences it’ll always be significantly cheaper to keep the kicks around long term than the corolla cross hybrid

Hey alex nice review! has owner of a nissan qashqai up here in Canada or in the states a rouge sport! The new kicks look mix of two models! My opinion it’s cool looking but it just doesn’t make me buy one I prefer getting a rouge a lot bigger but don’t get wrong it’s still alot better then last year model by a long shot!

Depreciation on these will be brutal. Nissan's biggest problem now is the perception (based on financial reality) that they are going under. Let's face it, Nissan hasn't provided any value (styling, reliability) in years. Their horrendous CVT hasn't done it (or it's reputation) any favors. I will take a pass on anything Nissan
reply

yeah, it is a very good suv and has lots of new tech and options. What I am concerned about is their CVT, I would prefer the manual transmission on this suv rather than the CVT. Nissan should know the CVT has lots of problems for the earlier models. Nissan should use the normal transmission or manual transmission instead.

If it had a hybrid it would have been great. the corolla cross hybrid I got as a loaner from the dealer was pretty peppy and easily gave me 40 MPGs without trying. other than that, nissan did a pretty good job with the redesign. Saw one in person the other day, pretty striking for a cheap car

if you included a mid-size SUV like the RAV4 or Honda CRV in the size comparison, it might help as the massive 8 ) between the Kicks and HRV is misleading as sometimes just rear bumpers can be almost 8 wide! Too many misleading reviews and factoids these day on the internet.

I'll never look at one of these for purchase for my self and my kids are too young for me to care about this as well but I always watch all of your videos and am always impressed at your professional presentation.

Every reviewer carps on the Nissan CVT seemingly based on years-ago problems. Have there been significant problems with the previous gen Kicks from 2018-2024 If not, stop talking about it.
reply

Alex, Before it was hastily kicked out of the factory, this Nissan should have been equipped with a much more competitive drivetrain.
reply

Only negative is the backseat needs a few inches in legroom. Other than that they did a really good job. Already seeing a few on the road.
reply

The fact that the Trax and Trailblazer sold 300k and Ford and Stellantis are basically out of the subcompact CUV game is pretty amazing.
reply

This is a banger car. Cheap but well equipped and packaged. Hopefully this thing will help Nissan through their financial crisis.
reply

erm i’m unsure if this is changeable but in the review/comparison part at the end the kicks’ picture is the last gen model
reply

Isn't the Chevrolet Trailblazer, not the Trax, a better comparison to the Nissan Kicks Closer in size and available AWD.
