2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid - Subie's Next Gen Hybrid Is Here!

Maybe it's just me, but Subaru and hybrid seem like a natural pairing despite there being precious few hybrid-powered Subarus, but that's about to change in a big way. We already knew about the hybrid Forester, but Crosstrek fans will be happy to know that Subie's smallest vehicle is getting the hybrid treatment as well, and it's very different from the two previous hybrid Crosstreks, and that's a good thing. First things first. This is not truly an all-new hybrid system, and that's just fine by me. Instead what Subaru did was take the PHEV transmission from the 2023 Crosstrek, swap in new Toyota motors (likely from the Highlander hybrid, and then marry the system to their latest AWD system and a new 2. 5L boxer engine running on the Atkinson cycle. The combo is good for 194 horsepower and an estimated 199 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the retention of a mechanical AWD system, rather than the e-AWD setup in most Toyota hybrids, the Crosstrek should be just as surefooted as a regular model, except with more shove and better fuel economy. Subaru has yet to give us an MPG estimate, but based on the old model, I'm guessing between 36 and 40 MPG combined. Hopefully, we'll get curb weight figures soon, but expect the weight gain to be around 150 lbs. The only real compromise I found while crawling around the new Crosstrek is the loss of the spare tire. Yep, the air-cooled li-ion battery is where the spare normally lives. On the other hand the hybrid system will give you better performance, better fuel economy, and it'll have the new LCD cluster we just saw in the WRX. As long as Subaru keeps prices under control, this could be a real winner. What do you think

Of course I already bought a new 2024 Crosstrek Wildernesslol. I wanted a hybrid but, obviously, none were available in this model. I really hope they redesign the cladding on the Wilderness model as well. If everything goes well on this and there’s a few minor redesigns on the cladding and getting rid of that gold color crap on the roof rack and in the bumpers, I may go ahead and trade in my 2024 for a CTW hybrid in 2027 probably.

To me the Subaru engine is a downside due to the sheer volume of parts for the Toyota powertrain, that are interchangeable. That cx-50 will have significantly better powertrain support for its life. Also Subaru isn't exactly known for long lasting head gaskets, and spark plug replacements on a flat 4 are awful. As a lease car this is neat. Buying however I wished they went full toyota for everything in front of the differential

5: 01 Though the battery in cargo area is nowhere near as bad as the space taken up in the former plug-in hybrid.
I find it hard to believe when it was on the drawing board no engineer said maybe. we should have space under the rear seat for a battery
Hybrids been around 25 years. The fact Subaru still does half measures disappoints me as someone who drives one of their vehicles.

Glad Subaru kept the mechanical AWD on this hybrid model. Its the way to do it with Hybrids. Not the split system Toyota uses as if feels segmented. The only exception to this is if it was pure EV and which the front and back have the same motors. Hybrids should always be mechanical AWD. Do we have towing specs and can a tow setup be installed in the Crosstrek

Subaru has an interesting way of marketing their vehicles. There is a ton of hoopla about the Crosstrek Hybrid the last couple of days, and even video previews like this, but they have claimed the Crosstrek won't be available until fall while the Forester Hybrid is scheduled for this spring. Yet they have no details about the Forester. Seems a bit backwards.

Subaru should offer the hybrid in the Wilderness model too. I love everything about my 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness except the fuel economy. The hybrid will drive better/smoother and fix this problem. All that low-end electric torque will make it an absolute unit. I see huge potential here.

Finally! Looking forward to this. The prev gen PHEV was very expensive in Canada. It was the most expensive near $43k and only had 27km of range. Hopefully their are a few trims for the difference price range. Seems they realize just hybrid is good.

I believe we're going to be getting this in Australia as well - hoorah horrah! I like the car but we only get the weedy 2. 0 litre version which does 0 - 100 km/h in about a day. This should, hopefully, be a significant improvement.

So. Wilderness Hybrid on Crosstrek and Forester given that they don't get the turbo motor like the Outback Wilderness does They could really pull a Volvo and offer an OBW turbo hybrid, I bet it would sell well!

I thought he was protecting the location: Calamigos Ranch. No, its just another Forester.
When are we going to get the Japanese trifecta Honda engine, Toyota hybrid, Subaru AWD. Please come to your senses Japan.

Love it, but it loses a lot of points in my assessment due to no spare. I know the battery needs to go somewhere, but I have over a million miles in Subarus, and most of those are out in the back of beyond.

Love the mechanical choices but do not love the fact that it still has the laggy old vertical center console screen. Though I realize that would have been a bigger lift to fix. Nothing's perfect I guess.

i understand that this thing does not use their traditional CVT but rather the toyota's two-motor THS e-CVT. But what about their mild-hybrid e--boxer as well as the PHEV Do they use e-CVT or regular CVT
reply

As always an excellent commentary. I really appreciated your emphasis at the end about how Subaru integrated the Toyota system with the Boxer engine rather than dropping the RAV4 keeping this a Subaru!
reply

Can you leave the ac on where it just runs of the hybrid battery and the engine only turns on a few minutes every hour to recharge the hybrid battery All the toyota, honda, and ford hybrids do this
reply

In my head cannon this was a nudist camp and there was a car length of people lined up in the shot. That’s why the black bar appeared. Great job editor! You were lucky one of them didn’t run for it!
reply

Lol the car in the rear is just the new Forester hybrid. Or maybe a turbo version Pretty sure it's just the latter. Or I guess it could be a new trim. Idk why they want to hide it so badly
reply

Omg look at that god damned mess under the hood! Why Subaru you dimwits I could redesign your car so the engine can be removed in 10 minutes. Why are you making things dumber and more difficult
reply

Sorry for the re-upload guys. There was something in the background that we can't talk about. That's all I can say, but. it wasn't there when we started filming, so it wasn't our fault.

Prosthetic tan color looks AWFUL. Drop dead price, considering that the AWD Nissan Kicks is all new, and also is CVT equipped, is maybe a couple hundred bucks more than the comparable Kicks
