The current diesel offerings in any half ton make absolutely no sense at all on any level. Have you priced the difference in diesel fuel over gasoline lately? Currently in my state the average price for diesel is about 60% more than gasoline. Typically a diesel will get about 25% better fuel economy than a similar gasoline powered vehicle. So you will still be taking a big hit on fuel costs. The diesel offerings have a premium of around 3K to 4K right up front. Diesel powered vehicles have higher maintenance costs than gasoline powered vehicles not to mention the cost of replacing any of the emission equipment when it fails. Also note that this is a new design that puts the timing chain and the oil pump belt on the back of the engine. Yes a wet belt for the oil pump. GM engineers claim it has an expected lifetime of 150K miles. So at 150K miles you can expect to drop about 2K to drop the transmission and replace the belt, oil pump and timing chains. There is also an overly complicated plastic valve system that controls the coolant flow. I am sure that will never fail. This power-plant has too many potential issues and I would never recommend it until it has proven its worth. Now if I am going to be towing on a regular basis I would be looking at a 3/4 or 1 ton option possibly with one of the big boy diesels. But even then you probably would be better off with one of the gasoline powered options in the long run.

Like it or not you have to give the designers credit for making anything look different. There have been so many different trucks I don't know how they come up with anything new. I do like the look of the front any trim, think they did a good job. My problem with the last one was I didn't fit well in the cab my shoulder was against the b pillar. I wanted to buy and went to look at the reg cab short bed but it was so small inside my knee hit the dash as well as my shoulder hitting. Was very disappointed I was ready to but it. Haven't been in the new one yet so I don't know how they are. Last GMC 1500 I had was a 1989.

Alex- This Silverado's fuel economy is impressive, BUT I do believe you missed some key info on why the Ram had slightly worse mileage. Your Ram was LOADED, with air suspension, 3. 92 axle, crew cab, 4WD, etc. It was far heavier than this very lightly equipped Silverado. I think it is worth putting into perspective when comparing to the Ram. And the fact that the Ram has 2 fewer gears, large 22 wheels, yet was only 1-2MPG off of a low-trim Double Cab Silverado does beg the question on whether the Silverado is superior or not.

While I m impressed by the output of the 3. 0 duramax, the premium for the diesel motor just doesn t make sense to me. First I have to pay thousands more for the engine, it then takes years to break even when you compare the cost of gas vs diesel. I did a similar exercise a few months ago when Jeep put the diesel in the Wrangler - it would take over 10 years to recoup my money assuming the price differential between gas and diesel remained the same.

4 words: Belt Driven Oil Pump. All the way on the back of the engine. A dumpster fire and hand grenade with the safety pin removed after the factory warranty expires. The way things are going and if they really are dropping the Baby DuraMax 2. 8L four banger from the Colorado and Canyon then probably this 3. 0L Diesel will get the Ax soon after. I wouldn't be surprised, after all, they axed the 4. 8L V8 DuraMax that was ready to debut back in 2008.

Nothing Beats Diesel for Towing if you plan on towing regularly. Despite what you may or are told about v8 or V8 Hemi, they simply don't meed the requirements of towing power, reliability, gas milage for TOWING. Frankly, if you're going to get a pick up you're going to be using it for work. And your going to adding weight, which means you're going to need something that's effecient and powerful and again. A Diesel is the way to go.

I would imagine this truck electrified as PHEV to have a big enough battery to accumulate regenerated enery to help exhaust braking and allowing city dwellers in California to drive pure EV in downtown. This idea is not mine since is already used in Euroean version of Mercedes Benz GLE 350 de with pure EV 60 miles of range which is assembled in the USA and shipped overseas. Stay safe.

Oh boy! I've been waiting for this review! Lets watch shall we? Well. That was a good review Alex, Thanks! I think I'd take the GMC like the previous introduced AT4 that you had the quick review with? Yea. That version! That's the one I'd seriously consider purchasing. That is my pick for the best 1/2 ton truck current for sale in the states.

It would be interesting to see how Chevy's 2020 Silverado with the optional Z71 Off-Road Diesel package would fair. Unlike the base 3. 23 final drive that's equipped on the trucks fitted with the 3. 0 I-6 Duramax, the Off-Road Diesel package up-rates the final drive ratio to 3. 73.

It's a shame that here in the UK the authorities are forcing buyers to not buy diesels. Just when derv fuelled engines are super clean they've been ditched, (mainly to bring forward EV's) such a shame as they offer incredible economy and high torque levels. Very interesting review.
