Kia's Middle-Child Mid-Size Sedan 2021 Kia K5

For reasons that cannot be explained, Kia is doubling down on mid-sized sedans. For 2021 we'll have the RWD/AWD Stinger, the FWD/AWD K5 and the FWD Cadenza all vying for your dollars and that's before we consider the Forte, Rio and K900 sedans. Where does the sedan formerly known as Optima fit into this 4-door assault? Let's find out

I'm not really surprised that they decided not to bring the hybrid over. In my anecdotal experience talking with other Americans, they still mostly don't think twice about their environmental impact, and most people are still very unaware of the way hybrids work (namely, that most don't plug-in. It is a shame though; I bought a '20 Sonata Hybrid Blue a week and a half ago and am so far, over 600 miles of driving, averaging around 55mpg; I couldn't be happier with my big beautiful efficient blue. the color of the car) purchase.

I'm disappointed with this review Alex. You overlooked many things that are missing on this model compared to the Sonata or the Korean version K5, like folding mirrors, 12 inch digital instrument panel, real leather seats (NAPA, dial gear selector, ambient lighting, heads up display, smart park and also the ability to pull the car back or forth with the remote, etc, etc. Being only 1k cheaper than the competition isn't good enough tbh.

Car looks great BUT kia is making the same mistake Nissan has made with the altima with not making AWD available with the more powerful engine. I have a 2017 Cadenza which is only slightly more heavier than the K5 and putting down 290 horsepower only through the front wheels is quite a struggle. There's no torque steer but constant wheel spin/hop.

Oh my oh my oh my! Kia out here giving the midsize sedan segment the ol triple threat! I love them all! Totally agree with you that fake exhausts and vents should just go. The Stinger has some fake vents too, but overall Kia/Hyundai/Genesis are out here keeping sedans alive! Chevy, Ford and others should take notice. Excellent review by you here Alex.

My problem is the interior, which is no better than the current Optima
The current Optima is better looking, with just as nice an interior
The only K5 I'd be interested in is the 290 HP Turbo with AWD
So this lacks the nice interior of the Sonata, or the powertrain it needs to stand out. It's a double swing and miss

I still don t understand why there is a need to review combined legroom. There is almost never an instance where front seat legroom is cramped. That can very seldom be said of the rear seat legroom. Would you be opposed to sharing both combined legroom and rear seat legroom only?

i loathe fake exhaust tips. but it's cool as long as it's not fake tips on sport sedan or sportier version of a model. while the K5 looks amazing & seems to be a great value, neither of these are particularly sporty cars so it doesn't really bother me.

Korean Brand cars improved quite a bit within the past few years. but reliability still a concern to me Friends had to send their car in for repair within the first year. maybe a lemon? But i guess it is good if you lease it and play for a few years.

Well done Alex. Very thorough and informative. It's crazy to think that you did this on a compressed schedule. You left no stone unturned and provided more than enough information to make an informed decision regarding this car and the competition.

I have witnessed Samsung and LG surpassed Sony and panasonic 15 years ago and today I am witnessing Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are about to say bye to its Asian competitors, Nissan, Toyota, and Honda.
Korean wave is on fire these days.
