Volvos newest CUV is also their most impressive in several ways. Since 2016, all Volvos new products have been closely related so when the XC90 proved to be a solid luxury SUV, it was logical its close relatives would be tough competitors as well. The new XC40 on the other hand uses an entirely new platform, one designed specifically for small vehicles. After the success of the SPA platform vehicles, many in the automotive press were wondering if Volvo would be able to knock another one out of the park, and the answer is yes. Volvos new XC40 and CMA platform prove that we e seeing a renaissance, not a one hit wonder. Part of what makes the XC40 so impressive is the segment in which it competes. The sub-compact luxury CUV segment in America contains no RWD based vehicles at this time. This puts Volvos FWD based XC40 on equal footing with the big boys from Mercedes and BMW from the start. On top of that Volvo gives us the most standard power in the segment, highest level of standard equipment, and oddly enough, one of the lowest base prices. Coupled with some of the best driving dynamics, a sexy exterior, plenty of premium options and an upcoming EV and plug-in hybrid model, the XC40 is quite simply the best small luxury crossover you can buy. The only question left is: can Volvo build enough of them?

Really like this XC 40, it drives nice and has great styling. My one huge gripe is that backseat door. When you open the backseat door, its at such an acute angle, the amount of opening you have to climb in the back is limited. If you were to put something like groceries or something thats larger or bulky, Im not sure you could get it all in the back seat without having to be a contortionist to get it inside the SUV. I know this sounds silly, but until you actually see it for yourself, you wont understand. Is this a deal breaker? If you have to shove your kids in the back seat and other things on a daily basis, it sure would be a major drag. If its just you or your spouse etc. sitting in the front, then its probably not a deal breaker. Everyone can make up their own minds. I thought I was nuts at first when I noticed how tight it was to fit into the back seat because the door doesnt open widely as other SUVs, but then my husband also confirmed that he thought the same thing.

Ive been driving a 2019 XC40 R-Design T5 (w/ 20 wheels) for the past few days, and Ill be dead honest. This car handles quite poorly. The body roll is immense. The steering is some of the lightest Ive ever felt. The road noise over certain types of pavement is quite loud. The sound of the turbo spooling up is incredibly noisy. The overall feel is definitely not Volvo. Having previous driven the newest generation XC90, this pales in comparison. And I generally prefer smaller cars. I havent been able to compare this to any other car in the segment, but based on Alex saying this is one of the best, I dont think Id want to. I had high hopes for this car. What it does have going for it is the interior/exterior design which are both some of the best around. Unfortunately Id caution folks to give this car a decently long test drive before deciding to buy. Oh, and props to Volvo for decently equipping the base trim.

Bought XC40 T5 in US a few months ago. Getting 24 mpg combined. Driving it is a joy. Seats v comfortable. I drive it often in off-road mode on the beach, where it handles everything my old Jeep Wrangle did except very very soft sand - got stuck once. Got some Tred boards to get myself out. The 8. 7 inch ground clearance beats most other CUVs in its class. Very smart car, with many options to customize. Love the large touchscreen. Pano sunroof cover closes automatically when the parked car gets hot inside. Storage in back is small, but ease of dropping back seats flat means i can carry the occasional load w/out problem. If you remove the hard cargo cover it fits perfectly in the slot designed for it - i. e, it isnt seemed to be sized - it was designed like that I use that space to stash my tred boards for off-road. Fun car

The price gap between the T4 FWD and the T5 AWD is so small, it seems like they either wont sell any T4s, or all the T4s will be heavily discounted and the T5s wont be(will they do a T6 model with the twincharged engine in the future, or will the T6 add hybrid to the T4/5 motors? Hmmm)Also, I am digging the Black/lava interior. I used to be all about all-black interiors, but in the last few years Ive found them more and more dull to look at, but still dont like light interiors. My VW Alltrack has the black/brown interior, which I like a lot, and I am glad to see more and more manufacturers offering dark, but not all-black, interior choices in more and more normal vehicles.

Love the car, with one reservation. Small windows, dark seats and dark headlining on the R-Design makes me think that the interior (with the moon roof closed) feels a bit dark, small and claustrophobic. Two questions, Alex. One, does it feel that way? Two, the seats and headlining looks lightish grey rather than black. is that correct? Does it make a difference? The inscription has cream coloured headlining, and far as I can tell without actually having been in one, is that makes the inscription feel more light and airy.

I love your reviews. I am completely smitten with the XC40. I had been looking for a new car after moving from NYC to Chicago, and my choice was the Subaru Legacy Outback. Then I saw this. I test drove one at my local dealer, ordered one, and will have it delivered late June. The major factor that sold me getting this car over the Outback was the subscription plan, where everything is covered for one monthly payment, including insurance.

Brilliant piece. One point though. It is not very fair for the models designers to have them come up with a clever. and pretty unique, compared with the competition) way to store the cargo cover when it is removed (underneath the the cargo area floor) and, then, still complain that that particular space. which already is another clever added space, in terms of design) is lost. You simply can not eat a very sweet design cake and still have it.

Warning, trunk space is really small compared to other crossovers Unless you are getting a roof rack, the trunk space of this car is close to unusable for more than 2 medium size luggage. I was deciding between the x1 and this car. Everything about the xc40 looks good until I open the trunk space. Why even get an SUV if you have no trunk space? It cant even fit a medium size foldable bike.

1) Hate the sunroof, but I would only buy an AWD model and Im afraid the sunroof deletion is going to be confined to T4. 2) Whats up with this excessive steering work, whats the rack ratio? Seems like 1: 20 or something. 3) The lack of cooled seats is a problem. 4) The climate controls on the touchpad is quite unfortunate, although I could live with that if the rest was passable.

. Whats with Consumer Reports putting Volvo very last on their list of most reliable vehicles. I think it all had to do with their infotainment system giving out. And they said users really need to be cautious because so much is tied into this infotainment system, and if it goes out, apparently users are left out in the cold, sometimes quite literally?
