2018/2019 Mazda6 Turbo Can It Compete?

Its been a while since Mazda offered a turbo engine in their flagship sedan but the wait is now over. In addition to swiping the 2. 5L turbo engine from the CX-9, Mazda decided to bring us a new top-end trim with improved interior materials, real wood trim and more. Just don call it a Mazda Millenia. EDIT: Since this video was filmed Mazda has released CarPlay and Android Auto support for the infotainment system. We will be shooting an updated video on that ASAP. Going head-to-head with the new V6 Camry and 2. 0L turbo Accord is no small matter, and here is where the Mazda lets us down just a little. But with solid good looks, excellent driving dynamics and more power than before its still worth a look. (And before you ask, yes, in America its Mah-z-dah. AKA the way Mazda pronounces their own name on this continent. The moment Mazda makes commercials where they pronounce their name as they do across the pond, Ill adapt my pronunciation)

I enjoy your reviews most of the time, but this time I have to disagree with you on several fronts. When it comes to style, the Mazda is hands down the best looking, in and out. Its cohesive and sultry. The Camry is nice looking from the back and side if you get the sport versions, but the front end is HORRIBLE The front looks pieced together on the Sport models and the base front looks like the Avalon. The interior is overstyled just like most Toyotas. Nothing cohesive at all. The Accord is not bad overall but it looks like Honda went with the fastback style and it looks a bit frumpy. The interior of the Accord is a nice place, definitely better than the Camry, but doesnt feel premium to me (I have sat in a few touring and sport models. The Mazda looks and feels expensive compared to the others. I dont know what materials you think are better in the others because I havent seen them or felt them. The only thing that I believe would make the 6 better would be the replacement of Mazda Connect. Its not perfect, for sure, but neither is the system in the recent Hondas. Honda makes you go through too many steps to do basic things. You mention the Apple CarPlay/Android Auto missing from the Mazda and Toyota. I saw a review recently where Mazda has made CarPlay and Auto available as a download through the service department. The vehicle just has to have Mazda Connect with Navigation. I stopped by the dealership to see the new 6 GT Signature and I asked the dealership if this was true and I was told, yes The new models arriving this fall will have it in them from the factory. Im sure the Camry will get it soon enough.

AlexI do not agree with you on several factors: handling: this mazda 6 has the best handli g driving definitely better than camry and accord. cabin noise: I think you will change your decimetre everyone even owners of the new accord honda agree this mazda 6 is the quietest car in the segment. All around the world you are the first to say this car is loud. Car and driver motortrend savagegeese forrest self review, everyday review even reviews coming from other countries say the oposite. 72db at 50mph impossible. From my point of view for a family car 0-60mph has no impritance but more driving like the 30-50mph the 50-70mph and the mazda 6 is the fastest in these cases. What about the interior vastly superior to a camry and a deal. Memorably agree with you but not this time for driving this mazda 6 signature I was impressed by the quality of this car it looks like an audi or a bmw. Btw 0-60 mph in 5. 7s camry? In real life people can not do better than 6. 5 6. 6s if i am wrong post a single video. I watched yesterday a review of the new mazda 6 made by a German and there was going android auto and apple carplay soon we will have ca in the United States and Canada.

Alex you missrepresented some facts not in favor of Mazda 6. As far as handling goes this Mazda6 despite narrower tires still allowes you to track and control the car on the road better than Accord and Camry all due to better chassis and sterring. Yes 6 years old Mazda chassis is still better than brand brand new CamcordCabin feel and design is also superior on Mazda 6. If extra 0. 5sec to 60 is this important to you at cost of gear hunting transmissions like Camcords than go elsewhere. I would get 235 summer tires and blow away Camcords. Acxeleration is important but how you deal with it when steering and braking the car is yet another story. Mazda does it better than Camcords. Cabin is quieter on 6 as well. Overall quality on Mazda the only one here being true Japanese world global car speaks a lot here and points me again to Mazda superiority. Extra 2 qubic feet of cargo or 2 of leg room are not enough for Accord to be a better car for me.

Yeah, after 3 months of research and test driving against all the competitors and higher-priced options like the Stinger and AuDi A4/A6 I purchased the 6 sig. While Camry and Accord have aspects that maybe better than Mazda. The sum of the Mazdas parts and design make it a better car. Also a lot to be said for Mazdas design/engineering capability when an almost 6 year old design can stay competitive with BRAND NEW designs from appliance manufacturers. Also cannot agree with your opinion on tranny. I found the Accord and Camry tranny hunted alot, while Mazda did not. And exactly what interior parts felt of better quality in the Camry? I found the Camry plastics and large front doors to feel lightweight and cheap. Mazda felt more solid. And I cannot get by the Accords beak. Personally, you dont buy the Mazda for numbers, you buy it for how it feels to drive. Number lie when compared to real-world experience. Anyway, to each there own.

Solid review. Very surgical as usual, which is why I watch Alexs videos. Points taken for a notion that Accords interior is better (when literally every journalist ever proclaimed it almost on part with entry level BMW and Audi, and Accords interior looks like a knockoff of 2017 Mazda 6. Second, sound measures have to be wrong, seeing how all other reviews put it uniformly on par, or quieter than Camry and Accord. I agree with all the other points though. This was a bit of a stop gap for Mazda until the new generation comes out, but overall not bad for a 6 year old platform. They could have saved the day with AWD and slightly different engine tuning (instead of tuning it exactly like CX9 and giving it all that torque. 270 hp and 280 torque would be easily achievable on that 2. 5T on premium.

Rear seat height limitations only come into effect if you are transporting tall adults - most kids will not be affected - so is it really an issue? Also not only does the conventional automatic transmission offer a better driving experience - the reliability is muchbetter. If you have a problem with a CVT, you will have to replace it becauseNOBODY can work on them. If this occurs after the warrantee ends youre out a nice chunk of change. The tire issue can be addressed at the first tire change as the originals wear out. The only real deficiency is the lack of Apple Play& Android Auto which is coming on board as we speak by way of a software upgrade and a hardware tweek. I know the Honda and the Toyota are excellent vehicles but they both lack the elegance of the Mazda design.

The discrepancy in interior quietness many, including myself, are referring to may be due to the type of road the car is tested on. Coming from a 2016 Outback 3. 6R Limited to a 2017 CX5 GT, I have noticed that the Mazda is much quieter on smoother roads; however, it is louder than the Outback on coarser pavement. So it is conceivable that Car & Driver found the Mazda 6 quieter than the competition because the cars were tested on smooth roads, while Alex found it (the Mazda 6) louder because he tested them on coarser pavement. As for the C+ score, I woudnt pay much attention to that. According to Alex on Autos, the 2017 CRV and the 2017 CX5 measured the same decibel reading - 70 decibels at 50 MPH. Yet, the CRV scored an A for cabin noise, while the CX5 scored an A-.

Theyre dead last in reliability according to JDPower. yet Honda and Toyota are easy top 5. Toyota and Honda offer more power AND more MPG. Mazda has the worst auto transmission which is why its inneficient. Toyota and Honda offer more space. Toyota and Honda offer better ride comfort. Even Toyotas entune infotainment system is better than what Mazda offers. You can get a mid trim Accord/Camry for the same price as base mazda6 due to incentives. Also Mazda dealerships are scarce and act desperate AF to sell a car, any car. they even offered me a used 2017 TLX for the price of a base mazda6 just to move inventory. Not something I want to see.

Mazda simply allowed some room to improve performance on future models, same way Apple holds back a few features with each new iPhone release. That big 2. 5t engine could wipe out Hondas 1. 5t in acceleration if they wanted to go that route, they just chose the around town tune where diesels usually shine, as in shooting that gap in traffic going 40-60mph. If i were buying a midsized sedan today it would be the 6, not just because i like the way it looks versus the competition, but also to support Mazda. the little car company that may just extend the shelf life of internal combustion engines with their SkyactivX.

The 0-60 time Alex got in the Optima is still suspect, so its actually one of the slowest in the class. However, I average 27 -28 mpg so the fuel efficiency is actually quite good and premium gas is not even recommended. The interior materials arent as nice as the Mazda, but it has additional premium features, and I have heard the Harmon Kardon System is better. Furthermore, the infotainment and 360 camera are better in the Optima, plus you get a longer warranty. In conclusion, I recommend the Mazda 6 or the Kia Optima, if you arent looking for the fastest in the class.
