Nissan's Rogue Is A Solid Family Hauler 2023 Nissan Rogue 3-Cylinder Turbo Review

When Nissan launched their latest generation RAV4 and CR-V rival, the one thing missing was a new engine. That's now been fixed with a new 1. 5L three-cylinder turbo engine. Yep, three cylinders plus a turbo. That might sound funky compared to the 1. 5L four-cylinder turbo Honda uses in the CR-V, but I think you'll be more impressed by Nissan's engine. The transmission? Well, not so much. Kevin: Oh dear, Nissan should probably try to make some better electric vehicles before it actively tries to kill off their ICE vehicles. 3cyl turbo in a notoriously under-maintained compact crossover? That s gonna be a warranty nightmare.
The 4cyl/8cyl sound comparison works the same as the 3/6/12 cyl sound if you compare apples to apples. The reason that a typical V8 doesn t sound like a typical I4 is because the firing order is different. The typical V8 uses a cross-plane crankshaft, which gives it a weird firing order. If you listen to a V8 with a flat-plane crank (like most Ferrari V8s or the new Corvette ZR1) they sound very similar to an I4.

Still waiting on the CRV hybrid review. I am going to place on order on either a 2023 Kia Sportage hybrid (For the quiet ride and normal road feel, 2023 rav4 hybrid (Because I hate myself I guess, or the 2023 CRV hybrid (Because it is probably quieter than the RAV4 but possibly more reliable than the Sportage)
I am getting out of a 2015 RAV4 Limited and I am just tired of my ears ringing after every drive. The dang thing is so noisy on the HWY and I am so disappointed in their handling of NVH on my current vehicle.

Please comment on the propilot. Has it been updated? For the past 25 years we have owned Subarus until this past year when we purchased a Nissan Leaf SV plus which has been superb as our around town car. Now we are considering the Rogue to replace our 2014 Subaru legacy for road trips. Surround view camera has become our new must have. However, because of the rapid adoption of EVs, and the possibility of long term reliability issues of a turbo 3 cylinder, we may lease our next car for the first time.

I just hope the powertrain quality and long term reliability is near Toyota. The interior build quality of my Camry isn t great with squeaks and rattles that I ve had to fix. Also the Toyota dynamic force 2. 5 4 cylinder while efficient, powerful, and reliable isn t refined omg. I ve never experienced such a loud 4 cylinder engine especially coming from Honda. I m down to switch brands if the interior build quality is better even if reliability is only slightly worse than Toyota.

Alex, Is it time to add one more column to your suite of standard ratings? I am thinking of a new category that officially evaluates 'Quality of Fake Gear Shifts' on cars equipped with a
Continuously Vexatious Transmission. When this Rogue made its debut it seemed quite large for the compact class of CUV. With new models pushing the Rogue towards the middle of the pack, the RAV4 must be in danger of being reclassified as a sub-compact

Kia Sportage AWD Hybrid will definitely be my choice in the segment hands down! I'm in love with innovation. I see them more often on the roads. Those boomerang DRLs is so striking to look at. And the technology I'm getting is unmatched in the segment. Some people may like the Plane Jane look in other brands. Which is fine, but then you have those who want something modern and luxurious within a budget.

The 3 cylinder could be set up as 1/2 of an inline 6. An inline 6 is naturally balanced both primary and secondary. The 3 might be set up with 120 degree crank difference for good secondary balance, but it will tend to rock because of the missing 3 pistons causing primary imbalance. It's possible the additional hardware for the variable compression will help cancel that balance problem. We'll see.

There is nothing wrong with CVT it s just different. You roll into the gas pedal from a stop gradual acceleration not like a conventional trans where you can stomp on it. Once cvt is at 30mph ish, then you can stomp a bit. It s like a dual clutch trans complaining that it s jerky at low speeds you can also perfect that where it won t jerk.

The complications and stresses on a 3-banger VC turbo with jatco CVT sounds concerning for the long run. I hate the faked CVT upshifts and wish there was the option to turn that off. I'm coming from decades of driving only manual transmission cars and have no preconceptions of what a slush box is supposed to feel/sound like.

I d stick with my Mazda CX-5. I don t think I could leave the Mazda driving experience. They re not the fastest or the best handling according to the numbers, but it s the most connected driving experience you will get under 45k, without going with BMW or similar manufacturers. I can t go back to numb steering. It s SO BORING!

Appreciate the review. I could lease a 3 banger but I couldn't buy one. If the car was 400 lbs less, maybe. But that engine (and with a turbo) has the ingredients of not lasting long. Doesn't matter if it has 201hp. The engine will work too hard. And don't get me started on the CVT. I wouldn't own it beyond its warranty.

3 cylinder 1. 5L turbo is too small to move a +4000 lbs(w/h passengers) SUV. Engine vibration is also one of 3 cylinder characteristics that is difficult to control. Nissan s engine is extremely complicated(variable compression. This is a first generation engine setup, skip this generation.

Still the best looking vehicle in the segment. Blocky / chunky styling, well proportioned. Better looking than bland new CR-V and over-styled Korean twins. But the Sportage / Tucson are possibly a better value and the hybrid is a good bet with mechanical AWD and 6 speed auto.

One thing to keep in mind for anyone researching is this is an updated CVT Design. It has an additional Trans Oil pump to help low end and high end response and instead of the steel shim belt like the old CVTs it uses a woven chain style belt now to help with durability
reply

savageese review pointed out a off the line delay in acceleration. This is probably due to the throttle programming wanting to save that CVT and / or related to the VCT tech. I agree this needs to ditch that CVT. I would also re-do that gear selector.
