2024 Chevrolet Trax First Drive Review

Chevy s new Trax doesn t offer AWD, but it does offer a seriously low sticker price and excellent handling. The 137 HP engine has a surprisingly throaty growl, but it s not terribly swift at 9. 4 seconds to 60. The combination of features might not be right for everyone, but those looking for a solid daily driver will be pleasantly surprised. Rob: Thank you for the video! I am shopping in this price segment and comparing this to the 2023 Crosstrek and Civic Hatch. Both are available with a manual, which is a huge draw for me. Crosstrek has less cargo space, a big concern. It also does not have ACC or auto brake hold. Civic is perfect for me because it has more cargo space and ACC/auto brake hold are standard with manual gearbox. The new Trax is an intriguing option because for the same 26k you get far more equipment: sunroof, heated seats/steering wheel/mirrors, ACC, etc. I suspect the new Buick Envista will be even better in terms of style/comfort.

I'm by no means a huge Chevy fan, but I'll give credit where credit is due. They did a great job with the styling. I have no complaints. It looks extremely roomy for this class of vehicle. That big back seat will translate to a big cargo area with the seat folded. The power seems adequate. For me, it's the seat-of-the-pants feeling behind the wheel that matters in daily driving, not the numbers on paper. Alex seems to think it's peppy, so that's promising. Fuel economy is on par with other vehicles in this class. My only real concern is reliability. I think the Trax is engineered by GM Korea (formerly Daewoo. If so, the only American aspect of it seems to be the Chevy badge. My only real gripe is that Chevy is offering the Trax in some very unique paint colors, mint green, yellow, and baby blue (not the official color names, but those colors are only offered on the 1RS and 2RS trims, so they are paired with the RS's red interior trim. That's going to clash horribly.

I have to think that buyers should also consider the coming 2024 Subaru Impreza and for a bit more money, the 2024 Crosstrek if they need real winter capabilities and ground clearance. They are near the same overall length, have the same 54 cu. ft. of cargo space but slightly better fuel economy, more base engine horsepower, 152hp, and 182hp on the 2. 5RS and with standard independent rear suspension and AWD. Plus when you go to sell or trade the Subies are going to retain a higher value. The Trax is nice looking on the outside but I really don t care for those cheesy looking AC vents.

Its a decent hatchback for all intents and purposes and its priced right. The market needs more cars like this for commuters and people just starting out. I'm glad to see GM is trying to accommodate them. Not every working person can afford the average priced car that tops 50K. I'm really surprised at it having active noise cancellation and the ACTIV has 8 way power which would be great for my long legs. I'm seriously considering on of these.

That 22. 3mpg shown in the base model is quite a disappointment, I'm expecting a lot better fuel economy from a 3-cylinder engine, in a relatively lightweight car.
Unless you really need the cargo space & practicality of a crossover/wagon, I think the Elantra is a better choice, due to its much higher fuel economy, faster acceleration, and better engine reliability (port-injection, naturally-aspirated.

Great job Chevy! That is a fantastic looking tiny SUV! But that three cylinder turbo, can you say problems down the line! Yes big time! It sounds like a sewing machine! Yes Chevy has made a three cylinder in the past it was called the sprint, and yes they did make a sprint turbo with the three cylinders. Yes it s a great starter car! But it won t make it to 100, 000 miles that s for sure!

One thing I would note - this is definitely from GM's parts bin. The 6 speed has been around for about a decade. The 3 cylinder engine has been out for a couple of years now. The electronics are from other GM vehicles. The key has been around forever. It is how they kept the price down as well. Also, it should make the vehicle more reliable in its first year since it is using proven tech.

I think it is dead on for what people want. it lokks great and seems like a great value. the only thing i dont like is the engine if it had a good 1. 6 four i think you could get the same power and mpg with what i would think would be better long term reliability. I think this will be a huge hit for chevy. i like the buick version better, the style is even more modern.

Alex, For a moment I thought you were introducing us to a new Chevy Tracker which is fondly remembered as a cheap, compact, body-on-frame, GM/Suzuki, joint-venture 4X4 from
yesteryear. Getting back to this present GM/Daewoo joint-venture, with low, low prices like this, it is remarkable that GM can still afford to pay Mary Barra 29, 000, 000 per year.

How I wish Chevy still made an updated Sonic. I still have my nine-year old LTZ sedan with a 1. 4 turbo and a six-speed manual. Remarkable headroom, front seat legroom, and huge trunk for a sub-compact that delivers 37mpg. Add four snow tires, it is a beast in snow, especially with the manual transmission. This seems like a worthy car.

I know this may be asking a lot, but it would be great if you were able to start including some dimensions like depth and width of the cargo area. Even something like how high the seats are off the ground. As someone who recently has to consider transporting a wheelchair. Those kind of measurements would be awesome!

It appears GM has given up on hybrids altogether, unlike just about every other car maker. So sad. Instead, they're dishing out underpowered ICEs wrapped in ho-hum designs. Who are these cars built for? 21k for the entry level vehicle is nice, but to me, AWD is absolutely essential, as is 180 hp minimum.
reply

No AWD is going to come back and bite them especially in Areas where it snows. Im sure Subaru appreciates them not offering AWD. Also with gas being so expensive it would have been nice to have a cheap Hybrid option but whatever who want to create a hit like Ford did with the Mavrick
reply

I'd bemoan that it's amother crossover.
But not even a hybrid? Not even a mild 24, 48volt hybrid? Come on.
Not even put the Voltec drivetrain in this.
Which ever GM executive made that decision to kill off Plug-in Hybrids should go into the Executive Powder shredder

Right car at the right time. Interest rates on cars are 8 to 10 percent now. If you are lucky enough to be able to buy a house, it will take half your paycheck. The days of 80K cars at 2% interest for 7 years are over. Chevy will sell a ton of these.
