The biggest mistake Mazda makes with this model: Sending the most expensive version to reviewers. It completely ruined this models reputation, the reactions are always the same in every comment section. The mere existence of this overpriced version has absolutely no influence on other versions of the CX-90. It starts at 40k, compare that to other 40k 3-rows. Also Mazda offers 0. 9% financing and there are no mark-ups. CX-90 WITHOUT the overpriced S engine option are GREAT VALUE for money. And the PHEV version is great value compared to other PHEV and actually available. Just bc Mazda keeps marketing the worst version people think it's overpriced when it's actually a bargain.
And other than Toyota's HSD hybrids all other models in this segment get significantly worse fuel economy. Btw Toyota's Hybrid Max version is much less efficient than their regular HSD sytsem (that is not available for Tx, the Max is only efficient in city driving, in a direct comparison test by Caranddriver at highway speeds the Max got much worse MPG than the Mazda.

Great review, Alex. I appreciate hearing your second chance look at the CX-90 after the launch. Knowing that some of the drivetrain improvements have made their way into the production vehicles is great to hear. We have a CX-9 which we love. Being a family of three small people, it's just the right size for us. I think Mazda has simply picked its spot and isn't trying to be everything for everyone. There are many makes that provide roomier cabins, more towing and other features, but the CX-90 is looking for those who feel it's just right, like us. Our CX-9 is our first Mazda and likely not the last.

Hybrid's are for suckers. Good luck to all that own this vehicle out of warranty with its non-torque converter transmission, motor sandwiched between the engine and trans and clean sheet of paper in line 6.
Mazda performing its beta testing on their customers which is direct opposition to Mazda's previous business model of incremental change and commonality of driveline components to optimize reliability.

Alex, thanks for your interesting test drive and comparisons. Are you planning to test drive Lexus TX (350, 500h, etc) any time soon? Would be really interesting to hear whether there is any difference in the ride comfort of different versions of TX and in comparison to the Grand Highlander as well. Happy New Year and best seasonal greetings!

Customers: Man the CX-9 is pretty good, I just wish it had better packaging
Mazda: What's that you say? You the CX-9 to be more like the Miata?
Imagine if Mazda had taken the money they spent on this new platform and just put that towards the things people in this segment actually care about.

I'm really curious about the servicing implications of that transmission placement. Also, apparently some of the engine belts are squeezed against the firewall instead of up front behind the grille? Hopefully those are all long-lasting components. (Mazdas do tend to be reliable as far as I know)

We had a 2021 CX-9 and loved it, traded it in and bought the CX-90 and love it. Really enjoy the driving dynamics ride and handling, and really appreciate the wide tire width. Don t find this tire width often, really grateful for that. Mazda is doing great! Have a Blessed Day!

Patiently awaiting the cx70 launch I ve passed on many a used rdx and gv70 in favor of waiting for mazda. I will say the SH-awd on the mdx and rdx is beastmode when driving in the Rockies especially during winter. My wife s mdx has been bulletproof since we bought it in 2011.

I would argue that this Mazda is a great 2 row SUV that happens to have a 3rd row(for some reason.
Just a second thought: that wet clutch will probably never wear out with the electric motor giving the initial push and keeping the clutch slip to a minimum.

Another metric that would be really useful is to compare resale values. I bought a CX-9 last year for well below MSRP, and it's taken 30% nosedive in resale value. Granted, the used car market is in really bad shape but it really got me thinking.

CX-90 needs an adaptive suspension, the mission of a 3 row is not all out handling, especially when it sacrifices ride comfort, if you are using the third row everyday this is a tough sell I think

They should have just kept the exterior look like the CX-9, because that thing really hasn t aged. It s a shame about the packaging, too. Big on the outside, small on the inside.

Oh yeah, too small and. No storage, either. Yes, it looks nice, but for the price, not enough utility. Not much seat bolster. That vent sticking out is a dumb idea

When you're ready to replace your Durango SRT 392, only to realize that the saying there's no replacement for displacement, doesn't just apply to the engine.

They need to retune the suspension to make it a bit softer and the transmission. Both I6 engines should be faster than but the transmission is holding it back.

24: 32 The CX-90 doesn t come close to 68k. Where are you getting this spread? The Premium doesn t come close to 64, 855. Are you adding accessories or something?

Mazda should revive the Efini brand, similar to how Hyundai established Genesis to separate their focus on different models. If they had the resources

This is what happens when you let engineers do whatever they saw in their wildest wet dreams. Engineering dream, disastrous product for sale.

The 2nd row center console is only on the Turbo S Premium Plus so to judge the rear leg room based on 1 of the 11) trims seems silly.
