Auto Buyers Guide's 2024 Value Car of the Year Finalists

We've heard it all year and we agree; vehicles are getting expensive! The average new car transaction price is almost 50, 000 and nearly double some folks budget but all is not lost, there are still good values available. In what may be our most important category this year we have the Auto Buyers Guide 2024 Value Car of the Year Finalist list. Value means something different to everyone so if you think we missed something or have things we should consider for next year let us know! The Toyota Corolla has turned into a family of vehicles but the Corolla Cross Hybrid provides an exceptional value proposition. With a crossover design that's growing ever popular in the US and Toyota's efficient and reliable hybrid powertrains (not to mention standard AWD) we think the extra money over the standard Corolla Cross is well worth it. Subaru has made it's name making practical vehicles with AWD and in the sense the Impreza is about as Subaru as it gets. With a starting price (including destination and delivery) of 24, 085 you get a dependable symmetrical All Wheel Drive system in a usable hatchback with a low roofline for all your rack based carrying needs. Not a whole lot has changed for the 2024 model year but that lack of change is what helps make this such a good value. If Subaru adds more to the car than you end up paying more for it and since this is the value category that doesn't always help its case. The Chevrolet Trax has a distinct difference from the rest of vehicles on this list and that's the decision to make this Front Wheel Drive only. By only powering two wheels instead of four you end up reducing complexity and ultimately saving some money. Plus Front Wheel Drive is the preferred drive layout for everyone who wants to get to and from where they're going and isn't trying to imitate their favorite race car driver. The engine choice is an economical one and it pairs well with an attractive design and enough options to make each Trax feel like your own. Oh, and just a reminder, this all starts at 21, 495. Mazda is on a mission to make both premium and well priced vehicles and that's not an easy thing to do. With the CX-30 we think they've struck a good balance and it's worthy of a top 4 consideration for the 2024 Value Car of the Year. That doesn't mean the CX-30 qualifies as premium but what it offers is a refined style and a package that feels worth the money you're paying for it. That price will be higher than most of the other entrants but if you're looking for a sophisticated presence in the parking lot without breaking the bank there are still options out the there and Mazda makes a strong case for theirs. No one should buy the imprezza, just buy the crosstrek
Trax is the best value for money. It has a lot of space, it has different variant options and pricing tiers so you can choose what you like. It is the newest of all four and the interior has plenty of physical buttons and hopefully you get the old lot so you can get apple carplay. 90% people don't need awd so this is sufficient enough. Just get the trax and you should be happy. It will easily last for 6-8 years even if it's an American car

I was disappointed in the usability changes to the Impreza and the related Crosstrek. Those rear quarter, rear passenger, and hatch windows shrank considerably from the previous generation. I d wager that the new Impreza is no longer easy to see out of. Also, the rear cargo space looks to have lost the square dimensions of the previous generation. The new one has a much more raked rear hatch door and opening, which cuts into usable space.
One positive change that I will admit for the Impreza is that Subaru finally decided to implement the larger fuel tank from the Crosstrek. Previously, the Impreza always had a smaller fuel tank than the Crosstrek.

I found it interesting that Alex referred to the Impreza as having a 'higher ground clearance than average' in its segment, so I ran a quick search on the top two cars in that segment, i. e. the Corolla and the Civic, and I found the former to have 0. 2 higher ground clearance than the Impreza while the latter had about the same! So that statement about the Impreza is not accurate.

Imo the corolla cross isn t worthy. It s far overpriced. It s just not worth the money for all the compromises of the cross
You can get a rav4 hybrid for the same price MSRP wise and get a lot more cargo space and more power. Or you could get a Camry hybrid that gets 52mpg and have more space much faster better handling and now for 2025 AWD

Is the Corolla Cross really a much superior vehicle to the Corolla sedan? I disagree. Corolla sedan has 2 more inches of rear legroom compared to the Cross. Corolla sedan's trunk can carry as much cargo in the real world as the Cross. Sedan's a lot cheaper and more fun to drive due to it's lighter weight and lower center of gravity

CX-30 may have the nicest interior but what good is that when it always has the tiniest interior volume. Toyota Corolla Cross is reliable but rear leg room is a crunching 32 inches, less than 3 inches more than a 2 door Acura RSX. Chevy Trax? We all know how unreliable Chevy's are

I've been in a lot of ubers in economy cars. I always felt like I was riding in a tin can until I rode in a CX-30. Its super quiet, refined ride quality, and good looks really stand out above the rest in this category imo.

the impreza is losing sales and it not a contender for sure, Get a cx30, Corolla Cross, or TRAX, do not buy the impreza, no value in this car. Hope subaru did not pay you for this one, the impreza is on it's last leg.

I'm a little surprised the Honda HR-V didn't make the list, but maybe no one on the team got a chance to drive one? I'm eagerly awaiting hybrid versions of the HR-V and the Civic. Maybe 2024 is the year for them?

The best bang for your buck will be the Chevy Trax.
If it wasn't for the despicable dealer markup on the Corolla Cross, I would have purchased that vehicle. I refuse to give those dealers any of my business.

My two finalists were the Impreza RS and the CX30 Turbo and I ended up getting the CX because of the vastly different test driving experience. With the exception of some electric oddities, it s been fantastic

The Impreza is the only longitudinal car on the list, and so wins by default for me.
Idk what you re smoking dude. It s a great contender. It s too expensive for what it is, yes. But a solid option

Alex and Travis, If you can really afford a Corolla Cross Hybrid, you can't afford not to look at the RAV4 Hybrid with its far more useful back seat, spare tire and upgraded tow capacity.

I keep hearing really bad things about the Trax. Seen a a review where the cars windows didnt work.
Saw one in person and the drl was already broken.
Definitely a car ro avoid.
