MG has returned to an arena that it left more than a decade ago, when the long-lived MG TF finally went out of production, with its latest new model introduction. The MG Cyberster is the first convertible launched by the brand since its acquisition by SAIC. At once a recognition of the brand's heritage and a statement of ambition for its future, the Cyberster brings MG back towards its roots as a sports car maker; though it's anything but traditional. All-electric, and available with either single-motor rear-wheel drive (the Trophy model, as tested) or twin-motor four-wheel drive (GT, the Cyberster becomes an alternative zero-emissions option in a class that's widely still wedded to combustion engines. So how does it stand up when compared with one of those more traditional ICE-powered options: specifically, the BMW Z4 - now available with manual gearbox You might think a six-cylinder BMW Z4 anything but a rival for an electric MG convertible - but the Cyberster Trophy and Z4 sDrive M40i with Handschalter Package are actually quite closely matched on price (55k to 63k, power (335bhp each) and performance (0-62mph in 5. 0sec and 4. 6sec respectively. So exactly how has Chinese-owned MG Motor measured up to the established skill and might of BMW here; and which of these cars would better suit your preferences for some occasional al fresco motoring Matt Saunders is your guide. Apart from the generally uninspiring review, what in God's name is this atrocious video and editing work
1. Poor equipment/handling of equipment causing too many shakes & wobbles in the footage!
2. Poor composition of shots!
3. Out of focus shots!
4. And generally terrible editing! (lingering too long on shots, using footage with clear micro jitters without stabilising in post, poor footage selection, the whole 9yrds)
I know Autocar isn't TopGear, AutoTrader or ThrottleHouse but at least TRY to put out better content than this hot mess.
Missed opportunity to make a compelling comparison video of two decent sports cars and it's a shame cos some of the shots were actually beautiful which means there was potential. Smh

I am Chinese, and I have a question: why do every time people mention MG, say its a Chinese-owned company, but when you are English talking about Land Rover, you never mention Indian-owned, or Royce Rolls German-owned Is that Chinese-owned something so important for you English mentioned every single time What's the point of that

I would bet the MG will be more reliable than the BMW, we’ve had our MG5 from new and it’s now got 65, 000 miles on it and it’s never been serviced or seen a garage. Id take the MG over the BMW any day. Not everyone wants a rock hard ride some of us just want easy and comfortable.

Those dihedral doors are a bit cringe. They look great on an expensive supercar, but on a budget brand sports car trying to be something it’s not, they come off as tacky and pretentious. And what’s with the lack of shots of the car and focus on presenters face

I would really like how this car is designed if it wasn’t for the literal arrow taillights/blinkers. It reminds me of that horrendous Jeep Renegade that had taillights with X. Aside from that, I really like the design of the this car a lot.

I'm in this market ad I own a 1 year old sports car. I will NEVER buy a car that doesn't let me turn all that electronic crap off with an easy push of a button. Who wants a 'fun' car that constantly yells at you and tries to drive itself

You should've given the Cyberster a review on its own. Like I know that it won't be as good as the Z4, so review it as the first mass produced EV roadster. No one is cross shopping the MG with BMW, or Porsche anyway.

My God! This was a chance to make a fascinating comparison video. But it ended up being as boring as fcuk. The guy's about as interesting to listen to as a mute busker. Unsubbed, purely because of this awful review.

Autocar, I’ve loved this magazine for 20 years but it’s time to evolve to the standard of the the times or become irrelevant. Sorry but this is tedious, dated and not very enjoyable content.

It's sickening now how every review of a Chinese made car always tries to point out design cues from other makes, as if 90% of cars on sale now don't look like each other anyway. Thumbs down!

People inherently don't trust a dictatorship, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some data gathering software involved in that car. Would never drive it, it's the Huawei of cars.
reply

Please no one buy that MG. I would not be surprised if it has somedata gathering software in it! It's literally the Huawei of cars!
