Welcome to Episode 6 of the Autocar Vodcast 'Middle Aged Tread', where James Disdale and Matt Prior meet to discuss the best two sporty big EVs on the market: the Porsche Taycan and Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. The Porsche Taycan is a firm favourite of ours, probably the best sporting EV since its launch, mostly because it feels unequivocally like a Porsche. Hyundai has made sporty cars too, of course. Its N range of hot hatchbacks were at times class leading but when it came to making an electric driver's car it went all-out to create something entirely different. The wildly impressive Ioniq 5 N is the result. A new Ioniq 5 N is the same price as a recently used Taycan and, if you squint a bit, the two are at least indirect rivals. Join our vodcasters as they take you behind the wheel of the pair. Autocar, the world's leading motoring magazine and website, delivers industry-leading news, the most in-depth car reviews and opinion from our team of experts. Our presenters include some of the world's top motoring journalists who have unrivalled access to the world's fastest, rarest, most exotic and most exciting cars on some of the world's best roads and race tracks. If benefit in kind only applies to brand new cars, anyone in the market for the Hyundai will absolutely not be looking at the Porsche
People abandoning them as the UK charging infrastructure is simply not good enough, home charger and short journeys fine, anyone who chunks the miles will find it a pain in the arse
When you want to get home, you do not want to be queuing for a charger, being ripped off or spending hours in Costa to pass the time

Yayyyyyyyyyy! Middle Aged Tread and da'boyz are back! Great episode. I'm a Hyundai N fan (still loving my i20N) but I think I'd opt for the Porsche. It has a higher perception of class and quality and would be the car I'd prefer to have waiting for me outside the Theatre/Cinema/Restuarant/Pub. I don't need it to play track car and it just looked so much more refined going round that test road. Taycan FTW!

I think the difference between Porsche and Hyundai is that Porsche are making incremental changes and Hyundai are making huge leaps in development. I chose a new Hyundai Ioniq 5 Namsan when I got a new car earlier this year, test drove a few Audi, BMW etc but they wanted too much money for stuff that is included on Hyundai Ioniq 5. If you pay for cars it makes a difference

The fact that we are comparing a Porsche with Hyundai speaks volumes. Years ago, the thought of comparing the two car companies would’ve been laughed at so for me. My nod is for the ionic 5N it’s more customizable and OK. Come out of the Theatre. I’m good on your face going down the country lane changing up and down the gears what's not to love

Are the governments and car manufacturers forcing journos to keep writing and posting ev’s that no 1 are interested in
The figures don’t lie and only selling what few they do to the elite who are paying basically nothing for them,
So who makes the difference up when it’s trading in afterwards oh I know the good old tax man

At what point in history do people decide who makes what The N regardless of who makes it, has just disrupted the EV and performance car segments by creating a crossover vehicle that gives you a real reason to enjoy both. That’s a game changer and is already pointing the Establishment of performance car makers to copy.

r/ 5 N speed limit warning. On the latest software press and hold the volume button on the steering wheel. A message pops up on the infotainment screen to confirm. My wife bought the 5 N to replace her BMW M2 Comp and loves it. First time in 20 years she hasn’t bought a German car.

What I don't understand about this Ioniq is that they don't offer a few more engine notes including some actually nice ones. Imagine a high revving V10, a V12, a V8, whatever. So easily done.

I’ve got an N thru salary sacrifice. Not sure I could get a second hand Taycan by same method. Both fab. Loving the N. Encourage anyone to test drive before criticising.

Can't listen to this. Sounds like you recording outside a nightclub. Two voices lost in a background of road noise and constant bass from the shocks.
reply

Is there a microphone attached to the underside of the Porsche. Sounds like someone thumping on a wall the whole time (listening through headphones.
reply

Getting people to buy expensive new EVs will become increasingly difficult if the continue to shed value at an alarming rate
