Audi RS5 TDI concept: could 'e-boost' herald a diesel supercar?

Audi RS5 TDI concept: could \'e-boost\' herald a diesel supercar? Kieran: I think audi is on to a real winner with this engine. Essentially we now have a car with 380 bhp and 553lb ft which will do 40mpg thereabouts. Even a decade ago this was unthinkable. A diesel will never be able to drive in the same way as a large naturally aspirated petrol, but sadly those engines are becoming a thing of the past. The only manufacturer still committed to that idea is Lamborghini and they should be applauded for that.
In the vast majority of road conditions, a high performance diesel is probably the best way to go. Also, those who say diesels lack sound and run out of power too early are stuck in the past. All you need is a good exhaust and a dual clutch or auto box with 8 or 9 gears and you are sorted. A nice growl and never out of the optimum power band.

all these comments hating on diesel. diesel has far more energy in it per gallon than a gallon of gasoline. Too many people are stuck on the notion that gasoline is better. it really isn't. it has a few things better (better flame propagation resulting in higher revs and better emissions) but those really don't outway diesels benifits (ability to run at MUCH higher compression ratios, better fuel economy due to higher effeciency, much higher torque, more power, etc) I think if someone were to come out with a REALLY good diesel super car. it might shut some of the haters up. Also this ain't a super car. this is just another diesel sedan.

More straight line speed, poorer cornering performance. The Audi RS5 already has a lot of weight hanging over its front axle (because of the AWD system forcing engine placement further forward) add to that even more weight because diesels essentially need thick iron blocks and now the edition of electric turbos and you have a lot more weight still. That's before you take into account the fact that the RS5 is already a heavy car. To each their own I guess but that 4. 2L 450hp v8 is a gem.

Interesting comments.
I have a V6 TDI, it redlines at 5000rpm, is quiet too, most can't believe it is a diesel! Unheard performance and refinement only a few years ago.
Real world -on-street- performance, torque matters and a diesel has spades. This E-Boost somewhat similar in concept to the current F1 cars next engine tech, would like to see more energy recovery systems, TDI hybrid?
If Porsche can succeed so well with engines in the wrong place, they will do sporty diesels

No doubt these guys can make a sports diesel. My V6 TDI redlined at 5000rpm, is quiet, most don't believe its a diesel, unheard of a few years ago.
Real world -on-street- performance torque matters, and with an electrically driven turbo (F1 also uses, no throttle lag.
Would be a fun road car, small block V8 power for half the fuel bill.
Would like to see a TDI hybrid with F1 style energy recovery systems

Not sure why you folks need drum up the petrol engine since the petrol engine is a 4. 2L engine with 450hp at near 8000RPM. On the other hand, the diesel is a mere 3L and has 380HP at 4000RPM. That's less capacity; getting full power with less RPM and more torque. Not to mention 126. 7HP/Litre which is higher than most petrol engines including the petrol RS5.

So. they had a compressor. finally some one remember that.
But. the main disadvantage of a diesel still there. no revs! When you are beginning to have fun, it ends.
Although I have to agree that it is a more economic car for long distance commute and you can have some fun. But with the new sports hybrids, I think diesels don't get a chance.

Audi, don't get happy.
If you can master all that performance AND the sound, then and only THEN you truly got something to celebrate about. Since you don't, you got more work than BMW does with all its recent fake-sounding M cars.

Nice idea, but you could get a better result if you combined an electric motor for the rear so still quattro but more like the Peugeot Hybrid4 system.
More Real World applications than this ultimate sporting diesel, come on Audi!

Im just curious and please someone explain me. how come when you see diesel drag races those engines produce clouds of smoke, but Audi Le Mans cars emit almost no smoke being powerful engines too? Please someone tell me, thnxs
