Auto Express test drives the new Vauxhall Meriva to see if the clever rear doors justify the MPV's high price. Read more Broncho: I'm currently driving round in a brand new one of these as a hire car in Spain it's the top of the range model and has the 1. 4 140bhp petrol turbo, I've driven hundreds of cars and this heap of dog shit is by far the worst, this review is completely wrong, the steering is very heavy and it's turning circle is terrible, I've never driven what is supposed to be a city car with a heavier clutch, it actually makes my ankle ache and the gear change is worse than an old transit van's you need a sledge hammer to change gear its heavy and very agricultural, for 140bhp it is completely gutless, noisy and very thirsty.
You will also feel seasick every time you see a bend in the road, there's less body roll in a 2CV.
Do yourself a favour and avoid this car, how they've managed to make a modern car so bad and difficult to drive astounds me. An absolute heap of crap, very nasty.

I own one and it is extremely practical, roomy and comfortable, nice to drive and the 120 Turbo engine is more than adequate for driving on all types of roads. I have carried an 87 year-old in the back, access was very easy. A child seat is fitted easier than on any other car that I have had and I have taken prodigious amounts of garden rubbish to the tip. The new Meriva is designed for people who are serious about cars not because they are a boy racer but because they live in the real world.

I've just ordered one of these (a 2011 1. 7 diesel) to replace my old 2005 Meriva. We've just had a baby and already have a 3 year old so we needed something with a bit of room in the back and the rear doors will be a massive help for getting those childseats in and out - plus there's plenty of room in the boot for a folded up pram. This looks like a massive improvement over my old car.

Im wanting to get one of these, going to look, the doors look really useful, i need to get a active wheelchair (sporty) type in the boot or back seats. Looks ideal inbetween from small car to big people carier.

I wonder how they overlook so many negatives on this particular cars and brand, but when it comes to French or Italian cars they cherry pick all the flaws in the world

The seats are a gimmick, the car is not very original/good looking and the middle rear seat is a 1 foot wide folding strip. not what I would call practical.
