I've replaced many a PCM on this style Fusion myself. including one that got struck by lightning which was an interesting one. The electronics in these Fusions were just GARBAGE. It was right around 2007-2008 the big three were pinching every penny possible. for obvious reasons. The TIPM with those garbage relays on the PCB that always fail. this iteration of ECU was always super problematic. the Silverado underhood junction box of that era as well as those junk Bose stereo systems. Just a lot of junk came from those couple of years because of the market crash and buyouts.

If a transistor goes bad can it put power on both sides. Whenever driving a coil with transistors (in this case the ECM output is switched to ground to activate the coil) there has to be a freewheeling path that allows current to keep flowing and decay when the coil is turned off. That's either a diode or another FET between the output and 12V (inside the ECM. If that goes short the ECM output will always be at 12V (until a fuse pops.
TL; DR: Yes, it can.

Solar is the mfg that actually makes that OTC battery charger btw. if it is the bright green one you normally use. They make some great stuff. far superior to anything Schumaker makes IMO. I always thought that bright green one was a MATCO branded charger you were using. maybe you mispoke

Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me I vote that the SMA Club have a distinctive hat. Maybe something like the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes hat that Barney and Fred have. We could be like down-market Shriners and drive our rusted-out Chevy beaters down South Main.

I had an 08 with the 3. 0. Had intermittent misfire on cylinder 3 that I could not track down. Good compression, new plugs, coils the whole bit. The next step for me was the ecm, but with200k, we ended up trading it in. Otherwise great car.

I know just enough electronics to be dangerous so I have a dumb electronics question. Why not put the coil driver in the top of the coil pack so when the coil dead shorts it does not fry the PCM

That was quite the roller coaster of steps and results. Great job Ford, turning what should be a simple trouble code into a 40 minute troubleshooting masterclass. Huzzah!

I had to diagnose a magic box on an older ford, pretty scary, hoping you didn’t miss anything that would seem like a bad pcm. It was the pcm but still scary

Oh Sweet, even better, this is the fun part of working on stuff after someone else. It's already missing all the bolts.
