Funny note car manufacturers regulates themselves and decides what is dangerious enough to recall! Not the federal govronment! Chevrolet corporate who builds the cars and the chevrolet dealer who sells the car are seperat companies both controlled buy greed he'll bent on milking every damn penny out of you they can get! All auto manufacturers started intentionally building these failure prone items into there car and designing them so you can't fix them at home intentionally. They tell you it's technology and progress but it just lipstick on a pig! Car manufacturers do this so they can charge the dealerships more for thr cars and the dealers go along with it because they make it all back and then some on dealer only repairs and parts. 89 $ water pump costs you 300 $ and 800 to Install it for example. 1100 $ when you used to be able to do it at home in a hour for 50 $! Just wait untill they all go full EV and your 20, 000 $ battery needs replaced every 5 years. O yes you have not seen anything yet. Their greed knows no bounds!

I KNEW when they started this electric steering crap this kind of thing would pop up. Can ANYONE explain to me why a vehicle needs ELECTRIC POWER STEERING Obviously another case of WAY too many unneccessary tech devices designed to jack up the sale price and repair costs of owning a vehilcle. What a bunch of CRAP - WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE SAFETY PROTOCALS designed to prevent faulty equipment Then again if Boeing can get away with it in planes with hundreds of men women and children on board why not do it in cars - Im 64 and never had power steering fail in that manner, usually just a broken belt and harder steering but safe. AND that uncovered ground cable is unforgiveable, I really used to like GM cars from the sixties and early seventies but now GM is just another pile of crap cheap cut rate government controlled car company

I worked on cars for 20 years and got into the electrical diagnosis aspect. You are in a field by yourself there. Do NOT sell yourself short. I dealt with hundreds of 'parts changers' and even a local Pep Boys who declared that there was no way I could diagnose issues using an analog volt/amp meter when they had the latest state of the art digital testing equipment. The customer was happy when I replaced the NEW ALTERNATOR that Pep Boys had installed, with one that actually worked. I put the bad one back on at the customer's request so they could go back to 'the boys' and that is where the analog test equipment argument came from. You are self deprecating but your skills scream otherwise. Your local community is extremely lucky to have someone as skilled AND as honest as you!

Ground strap was the problem with a Chevy Express 3500 my Boss told me I don’t know why my van die’s running and sometimes won’t start I told him to let me check it for him but he denied finally he got stranded on the road and call a tow truck plus payed a mechanic to changed that strap 450 bucks instead of let me fix it for him I’m not a mechanic but at Chevy forums I found the problem but he denied my help then he regretted and told me I’m sorry I tough you were full of sh. t, ! DONT judge the book by its cover and that Chevy strap is so cheap and brakes easy shame on GM.

This can affect all GM's with electric steering. Had this happen on a '11 Chevy Cruze (steering yanked itself out of my hand) only it also happened during a turn and almost caused the car to go straight up the curb into someone's yard. It was my fault though, I had left the negative cable loose on the battery - battery also wasn't strapped down, and during the turn it tilted and the negative came off of the post.
I don't understand why the alternator isn't able to keep the electric assists going on it's own, though.

I ordinarily don't comment but I was involved in a successful recall campaign. It takes many people posting to the NHTSA website to get things moving. Instructions on how to do this are in the back of the owners manual. And then it is about two years before anything happens if anything happens. I'd suggest you not contact NHTSA but encourage the owner to. The manufacturer may seek revenge and ban you from the dealership. If a recall does commence sit back and watch a big mess. Cheers.

Every single manufacturer uses the global parts sources. Nobody makes their own parts anymore and all manufacturers elect to find the least expensive sources to increase their margins. They share blocks, trannys, pumps, solenoids, etc. All while raising their prices on their lowest models to make room on the lowest end to introduce even more cheaply made cars with greater margin to fill in what had been the low end car that shifted up into the next more expensive slot.

use to be, wen all was ANALOG, wen a ground went bad, the signallights lights and brakelights went on all together on the turnsignals.
nowadays with these Digital LED monsters, wen a ground goe's bad, the whole car is going haywhire on you.
wen Eric stept on the brakes, and turned all the electrics on, i knew than and there, GROUNDING problem.
good job Eric, and nice to see, electric, wen in doubt fix the ground.

I make 15 bucks an hour in a scrapyard/shop and my boss has a snap on scanner that is pretty sweet. I can't use it very well, I just look up on the scanner what the most common fixes are and look there first. That's usually the problem. But you sir, are a wizard at diagnosis. You are selling yourself so short. You could be getting flown to different countries making 10x what you make now.
Just a thought.

Ever since they made steering systems that had the ability and power to steer the car on its own (lane keeping, cruise with auto steering, etc, they also opened up the possibility of electrical faults and glitches making the steering fight you for control. And if you're weak, or old and frail, or just not ready for it, and you can't react fast enough or strongly enough. the results could be disastrous.

What I wonder is why thy even do it like this. seems like they are putting the cable and the connectors exactly in a space to get rusted out. Seems like something you would want to have protected just a little more, or even duplicated on both sides for luck. Equally surprised that the people are the dealership don't seem to know to check this simple and obvious thing.

I think this is a case for some redundancy
as a sparks ( now retired ) I would looking into fitting a second bonding strap between Bat neg and rust under the truck, as I have not and do not work on car/truck electrics I do not know if that would cause ground loops or not, but at least the power steering motor/control unit should have a dedicated ground.

With your cable upgrade and the local environment, it might pay to seal the cable to terminal end crimp with a length of adhesive heatshrink covering the terminal ferrule and about 1 inch along the cable insulation. This should keep moisture, salt an those other chemicals that you hate away from the cable core and prevent subsequent rot out of the new cable.

Eric, it seems to me your temporary fix is an upgrade. Add a little dielectric grease to both ends and you have a cable that will hold up to the harsh elements much better. That braided ground strap might be fine if the ground point were under the hood and protected underneath by the belly pan, but it's just the wrong choice for this application.

I’m sure in 1995 folks complained that GM wasn’t as good as they were in 1965, but good grief man, look where they’ve ended up! I happily daily drive a 1995 K1500 with a good old 350, and I’ll run it as long as I can. I live down south, so no rust. I’m so glad I don’t have to deal with these gremlins with a huge payment behind them.

You took the words 'out of my thoughts' concerning the lacking of gm to make it a recall. once enough of the 'special interest' people in this land of equality become casualties in said vehicles or because of them; to save face and look virtuous, gm will do something about it. after dragging their feet first.

quality is crap in all industries. Just uncrated a $100, 000 commercial printer. First power up throws code for a fan. Check fan, good. Pull out multimeter looking for voltage to fan, none. Continuity of cable good. Down at board no 24v output. $100k and bad at startup, WHERES QC Chineseum junk.

i experienced this type of screw up while working at ford, they will never admit they screwed up, no matter what the issue, you put suits, beancounters and lawyers in a room together and theyll decide its all our fault. thats why they dont want anyone workin on their products, so nobody can tell on them!

Good old complete controlled stuff! Only 45 faults! Computers are so freaking smart! Why are you fixing them Not to mention ESC, clock spring, rain sensor, 7 brake pressure sensors. Abs modular valves, abs ECU that controls all that. Lost com is almost always power loss. This is big rig though
