I had a 2008 impala with the 3. 5 V6. Sad to see that impala sit for so long cause mine was the most reliable car i ever own. She hit 330, 000 miles no problem before the transmission started to give me trouble. Everything still worked even the AC, never left me stranded on the side of the road for mechanical reasons, but i had the usual dead battery or flat tire but that doesn't count towards that. I do miss miss that car, drove smooth like a caddy and i had a few things done to it so it had more power than your usual impala. Seeing this car and hearing the chimes and lights on the dash brings back memories, seeing the 35 on the temp usually meant something electrical went wrong, not my car but i worked at a dealership as a porter and i noticed seeing 35 for a temp meant a big headache for the mechanic

You remind me of a local GOOD mechanic we have. I had a vehicle that had a left o2 sensor code. I replaced the sensor, still had issue. Brought it to him. he located a wire over the transmission that led to left O2 sensor had been chewed by a damn rat. Once he located, I asked how much to repair. He said, If he had to pull transmission, $800, if he could figure something else out without removing trans, $200. He ended up pulling drive shaft, and rear trans cross member, allowing him to splice wire and repair. He charged me the $200, could have easily lied and said he had to pull trans, he didn't. That was 10 yrs ago, vehicle is 2007, still driving strong today!

Just looked it up because it blew my mind: you could buy a 3500lb full size sedan in the US from Government Motors without ABS! I'm sorry, maybe I'm spoiled by Fords, but that is just plain not optional. My 1993 Explorer had 4WABS, my 98 Ram WT (stripped down) had RABS. I mean. was GM so hard up to get their prices lower to move vehicles that they made safety features optional on their premier lineup Another reason to log into my book of Why GM vehicles are just cheap junk, along with drum brakes on an 09 GMC Sierra, ridiculously tiny rear axles, abysmal transmissions and terrible FWD engines.

Love these diag. videos. This is a CLASSIC Eric O video. All of the references to different movies, music lyrics, the train whistle blowing louder than Whoopi G. on the View and the reference to Fulsome Prison Blues. Then, my Laptop screen kind of went all fuzzy when the D (diversity) word came across my sound system. Dang it. I knew it! Mr. O was hired for the color of his skin and not his abilities to turn a wrench. You here me Elizabeth, I think I'm coming to join you honey!
Alan from NC passes out.
See you guys on part 2.

I had an 05 Monte Carlo in a couple years ago that had same symptoms, but only after it sat in the heat. I did my due diligence, and tested all those things you just tested. Boom! Needs a BCM. 3 BCMs, and several hours of diagnostic time later, I finally got a good one. That feeling in your gut when you plug it in and it doesn't work. The next one had a whole different set of problems. I learned not to go with aftermarket. Cardone wasn't happy after they insisted on talking to me on the phone. XD

Haven't watched yet but my wife is still grieving when I sent off her 07 impala off to kenny upull and replaced with a 2018 colorado because of repair cost estimate. You can imagine the problem that I have now telling her that I want to spend $750 for a new driveshaft on my 02 s10. (In addition to current work doing brakes, a/c, oil cooler reoval, frame work. Apparently not a priority for y mechanic though. He's had it for 6 weeks. He knows we have 2 other vehicles to drive.

You were speaking of trust issues recently with a short video you made about the cracked plastic on a fuel pump. If you actually sent a car to have the entire wiring harness replaced, I would indeed have trust issues with you. LOL. I doubt you will ever turn to the camera and say, Face it, you trusted me, you F'ed up. I think that line is from National Lampoon's Animal House movie from 1978.

If this Impala had the 3800 Engine instead of the 3500, it was one of the Best Engines ever made, I owned a 2004 LS Impala for 16 years, best car that i have ever owned, everything under the hood with exception of Battery and Belts was Original. Two years ago- Car got T-Boned on Mall Parking Lot, cost too much to repair but before this happened, I would have driven it across country.

Part two part three part short, long medium, no matter what I’ll watch it. I’ll take what I can get. If I really don’t wanna bother I won’t watch it, but in the end I always do.
I have that same test however I cut the end off and I replaced it with a small jumpstart battery clampbecause I found the one that they supplied you with tends to slip off certain grounds

ABS on Impalas was optional for many years. I know I had a relative that purchased a new Impala and they said they had to pay extra for ABS. I urged them to get it. That car doesn't have the 3800 V-6; I know later Impalas had the 3. 6 liter LFA engine and they weren't very good. My first car with ABS was a 1987 Lincoln Mark VII. GREAT VIDEO!

I wish the people that complain about paying a shop for their time and material could watch this video to help understand that the manufacturers are the ones that actually make everything so labor-intensive.
And some of the blame lies with John Q public wanting all the dewdads
The conclusion will be interesting I'm sure

I hope, someday, that physically writing down findings, hypotheses, and strategies becomes more commonplace. The structure of such writing yields dividends particularly if troubleshooting is interrupted.
Majorly, the writing of FINDINGS makes it so much easier to review findings without repeating the tests.

This might be boring but is the correct way to determine problem. It might notvbe feasible but is correct to locate the problem(s. Eric allways seems to locate the problem & only the problem without quickly throwing parts at it like crazy. Or just replacing major components like the dealer or whoever else.
reply

The only thing stopping me phoning your shop to tell you that I can't watch part two, is that I live in England and the cost's against it. otherwise I might be tempted to take up the challenge! if I thought it was you going to answer the phone, I might see if I could get you to bang your head!

Just making my guess before I start watching, I'll bet some sort of rodent or corrosion is at least involved, what with the vehicle having sat for so long. You let a vehicle sit unused for that long and it'll be a miracle if it doesn't have some sort of issues, bad gas at the very least.

I would love to open that BCM, 5 volt supply probably easy to fix especially if it's a linear IC. Could be just a cold solder joint. If it's a DC-DC converter could be a bad capacitor in the start up of the switching IC. Love stuff like this, but in the service business time is money.
reply

Those Impalas have the perfect little rodent house. In the air box before the air filter right on top of the tcm/pcm. Chewing on wires gives them something to do. I had one last year, they used the tcm as a urinal and destroyed that. New tcm and restored Prndl and back in business

Eric you are a lot of awesome things, but one of the best is that you are a teacher who is willing to better others by sharing your knowledge. We laugh, smile, sit entertained, and simply enjoy watching you but best of all we learn from you. Stay fantastic brother.

But, but, but I don't wanna wait for Part 2. I'm gonna hold my breath until i TURN BLUE and then you'll be sorry!
I did have one stray thought, is there possibly an inhibit input that would turn off the 5V out
Just asking for a friend.

reply

5V regulator powering the CAN transceiver went bye bye, hence no talky talky or 5V ref. Find out next week folks. Maybe power on the can bus is enough to power up the transceiver for it to transmit its ID but not talk to the MCU connected to it
