Eric I really do appreciate the mechanics that can do this job properly I haven't had such luck I swap the motor for a junkyard engine which didn't work out switching the oil cooler and everything. ended up taking it to a shop to have the heads done on the original engine properly and five star head gaskets installed and they didn't even put the oil cooler back on the original engine or the torque converter cover which I spent like an hour and a half installing on the other engine on my back the car being 2 and 1/2 to 3 inches off the ground. you can get aggravated when you know people have all the tools to do the job right and they still find ways the script for screw it. so thank you for sharing this knowledge and your hard work. .

Hey Eric, I worked for Subaru for a couple of years and did a lot of head gaskets. I noticed you were talking about making sure the head bolts are lubed to prevent popping and creaking which is true but it's the coolant and crap in the bolt holes that cause the problem. Make a tap out of one of the old head bolts run that down and blow them out. I also saw that you did the heads in the car. It's so much easier to pull the engine. These engine come out super easy take about 45 minutes. Sure beats being bent over the car for hours. Also company 23 is a good site to find a handful of Subaru tools that will make your life easier.

I took a short term job as a service writer in the mid to late 70s. At that time, EVERY ONE of them had leaking head gaskets at about 3-5, 000 miles. They said it was due to head gaskets that were not compatible with antifreeze. Nice to see that nearly 50 years later they are still building the same junk at Subaru Heavy Industries. At the time, I owned a 72 442. They gave me a new demo with the job. I never drove it! good work Eric, I truly enjoy your videos, especially learning diagnostics on the new vehicles. Never too old to learn!

Hi Eric, I was told I have the usual gasket problem, planing to do it myself over the summer. I will use your videos to guide me through it (outback 2007, do I need to send the head to a machinist (what is it being sent for) or is it just the car you are working on? I was just going to change the gaskets and reseal it and get it over with! I apologize if it seems like a dumb question but I just got into doing my own car, and still feeling my way around it. Thank you in advance

I would send the head to the shop with the cams installed. The bearings or the lobes may be worn and the shop can tell. Now would be the time for new ones while it is all apart. Minimal extra cost for a better running engine & peace of mind. Also a new timing belt when you put it all back together, as well as coolant flush, t-stat, pressure cap & hoses.

I'm afraid to ask, is this the same engine that's in the 2005 Forester. I live in the Hudson Valley and you are 246 miles away. too much of a commute. Great information. Big fan of you chanel. Also, thank you for spending so much of your time explaining, demonstrating and simplifying what could be a very daunting task for the uninitiated.

Not sure if you will see this comment 3 years later Eric, but if you had this job to do today, would you pull out the engine or do it exactly like you show here with the engine lifted but remaining in the engine bay? Just curious if you still feel this is the best way to do it

Why this really makes me feel cautious about purchasing when is a winter beater. What is the average cost for the service if you don't mind explaining. Or how much did you charge for this service? I was reading all the comments and I saw that you said it took 11 hours.
