Lunch is over and it is time to find out what in the heck is causing this fuel tank pressure sensor to go on the fritz! Is it the ECM? Is it EMI? Is it a chaffed wire in the harness, or is it something completely unrelated to the EVAP system all together? Let's find out!

12V switching at that kind of frequency creates a lot of noise. As others have said, no need to be ashamed. When you get into uncharted territory on a diagnosis, a lot of times you end up doing a lot of guess and check. I don't mean guessing about parts and throwing them at the car like many mechanics do, I mean guessing on something to try (unplug this, change voltage here, try this condition, etc) and check to see if that has any effect. That's exactly what you did, you had a guess about what changes at 3000 rpm, considered the PSP. You checked if the PSP switch had any effect on the condition and sure enough, it did! You know as well as I do that if that car had gone to any other shop, it would have gotten a fuel tank pressure sensor, purge valve, vent valve, gas cap, wiring harness butchering, PCM and a fuel filter just because that fixes everything.

To generate noise on a 5v supply from a separate sensor at 3000rpm is extremely odd. Kudos for sticking with it. I suppose you could have scoped all the ECM inputs but that is an odd one indeed.
I personally would have placed an electrolytic capacitor across the 5v supply as a test to see if that smoothed the high frequency noise. I tend to use a full digital oscilloscope to observe noise,
I've had it supply noise. interference upsetting reversing camera images, a 220UF capacitor sorts them out. But I suppose a car shouldn't have crappy noise suppression

Eric o! A super mechanic gets stumped on a new discovery. Its when u have knowledge of systems and at what rpm things happen that makes u a superman! You might get stumped on something new but u know next time it happens. I know it sucks when it does happen but now ull be smilling all way home u conquered it and report to mrs o u fixed it. Awsome job keep it up. Mrs o needs to help u out more yall do a good workin team. Keep it up sir.

I guess I'm the dummy here but I am still wondering if the PS pressure switch is bad and needs to be replaced or is there just some wiring problem that; s letting noise get into the Evap reference signal circuit or is there something wrong with the ECM so that the PS pressure signal is causing the ECM to freak out? What was the final and complete fix? We can't just unplug the PS pressure switch and leave it at that, can we?

Well, it's that old gut instinct feeling, that nagging thought in the back of your mind telling you that's not it - yet. will do it every time! Even the telephone was invented by accident! Persistence, drive, determination, and perseverance is how you found the problem, NOT by luck! Great job Eric! My greasy dirty hat is off to you!

That was perseverance good job Eric o. You have plenty of videos of cars that have come to your shop after swaptronics. And! the customers have been billed and the car still doesn't work. Keep your integrity let the God given wisdom continue to direct you. Great to have friends you can talk to.

I am a few years late to the party but the most frustrating problems are the ones we learn from the most. I can tell from your eyes This drove you crazy. Your damn good at what you do and your customers are blessed to have such a talented individual taking care of them.

MAn, just watched both vids on this. Nuts. I am much like you and get eaten up when things don't make sense. Because everything does. Me myself when I drove the car in I would have tried unplugging the power steering pressure switch first thing. But hey, LOL

Eric: You da Man! Nice diagnostics. So your saying that the MCU was messing up the pressure transducer 5 volt line in the first place because of the power steering switch. Wild. Hey, now go have a couple of beers bud '! !!

The connector plug onto the pressure switch seemed to be just a push on, no securing tabs to click/lift/push. Struck me would be a sloppy/loose fit - poor connection not helped by vibration to 3000rpm?
