HOLY CRAP, can you imagine if someone who DIDN'T know what they were doing had installed that head gasket? Oh, by the way, you could have used that head gasket for a target, THAT might have relieved some stress.
I wonder if anyone makes an end for a dent puller slide hammer that would expand to pull those babies out. maybe just a cylindrical threaded piece in tool steel with three or four very strong sprung pawls that open up when it clears the bottom of the insert. Seems like something like that would work fine, as long as the vertical room is available, or maybe with a specific short slide hammer for this app. It could also be made to work with a bridge typed threaded puller on top. maybe better, that. ;-) They actually require very little force, or you wouldn't be able to get them out with your method, period.
LOOKED IT UP, they are all over Amazon, etc. pretty much exactly as I envisioned, as least the slide puller version.

I had a friend that would need a certain tool to work on something and then return it when he was done with it. If something else he bought broke, and it was out of warranty, he would go buy another one and return the old one in the new one's box with the new one's receipt. When he was doing siding on his mom's house he was going to do the same thing with the tool that punches the notches in the siding, until I bought it from him so that couldn't happen. Learned the behavior from him mom, I guess. She was one of those really cheap people who would save boxes and every little plastic container. Always driving around a car that was ready to die because she would never want to fix it. Bought a different pile of crap every other year or so and let it die. Really burned my ass.

I know how it feels to get a used part. I went to Autozone to get transmission fluid so I could do a flush on my Excursion. I couldn't get gallon jugs and had to buy up all the quart sized bottles. I believe I needed something like 16 quarts. While I was doing the flush, I noticed that some of the bottles had oddly dark fluid and they were missing the seal. One bottle looked like a glitter bomb and I quickly realized that someone had put their old fluid into the bottles and returned it to Autozone. Really pissed me off.

Blind hole puller for pulling the dowel pins should work although I hear you said there was a step where it was installed so maybe not. I would imagine the locking collar was made exactly what you used it for. Maybe was an afterthought to their original idea of using a marker and never added to or corrected in the instructions. Surprised the instructions didn't specify a time to let the Loctite set up before removing the installation tool from the insert.

As an assistant manager at another big box autopart store, I can attest to the ammount of used items that end up getting put back on the shelf. They get returned as new by incompetent employees and then sent back to the distribution center, which is then shipped to other stores again. I have gotten used ignition coils, water pumps, alternators and bearing shipped to me as new items to sell. When caught the get mark them off the stock and tag them out.

I hate that crap like what happened to you with the head gasket. I was installing a new radiator in my Toyota Corolla a few years back and bought new anti-freeze for it from Advance auto parts. When I opened it, the foil protector was missing and it was refilled with water. Talk about pissed off. Some ass dweeb probably returned it to the store after putting the actual antifreeze in their car and got a refund claiming they never used it.

That completely sucks. What a bone. I used to know a dude in a 12-step meeting who started every share with people suck. I used to get my BVDs in a knot when he'd say it, like he was too cynical or something. But I'll tell ya, the end of this video makes me think he wasn't too far off the mark. SOME people really do suck. Companies, too. I'm glad this job is 4 years away in your rear view, but that kind of stuff gets my goat.

The purpose of the sulfur is to provide lubrication at elevated temperatures. Cutting steel produces heat, which melts the sulfur, which lubricates. Using the (thick) sulfur cutting oil in aluminum tends to just cause the chips to stick, and interferes with the chip formation and extraction. When tapping aluminum, I have used a mix of the sulfur oil and kerosene (50/50, with good results. Snake oil seems to be just as good.

I feel your pain Mr. O. I purchased felpro head gasket kit and they shorted me some gaskets. The package had the felpro tape covering which means it was not previously opened. I had to go buy the gaskets that were not included in the kit even though the parts included clearly listed the gaskets I needed. Thanks felpro. PS. 215 for a gasket kit, you would think they include everything listed.

oh I feel your pain! purchased a 300 shark vacuum from Walmart, we took it home and my wife opened it and it was full of rocks, 5 potatoes and a few cans of tomato. lol I'm laughing now, but I was pissed. luckily after a little partially heated discussion with Walmart we got the actual vacuum. I'm telling you this box looked like it was sealed from Shark.
