What if on a similar LE5 2. 4 Ecotec in 2009 malibu with same P0017 I've changed cam position sensors, both VVT actuator solenoids, full engine timing chain (both chains, new chains/phasers/sprockets/chains, wiring to VVT solenoids. this is maddening, GM dealer claims my reluctor ring on exhaust cam slipped (I'm quite sure they never took the cam cover off, just based it on the code, I used their own TSB procedure for checking (the whole #1 cylinder valves opened and #4 opened etc) and both cam reluctor rings are perfectly lining up with the gasket surface. I would drive over if I wasn't 7 hours away from you in NH and gladly get you business. Any ideas what else to look at?

I have chevy colorado 2009, 3. 7 liter
5 cyl with code 0017. It is not sensors it is CAMSHAFT ACTUATOR SOLENOID VALVE. They say 3rd screen falls off mine had all 3 screens on valve I lightly tapped in on table on rag and wiped it off and back in and code 0017 went away.
this is known problem when you get 0017 cel light on dash on chevy trucks.
it is located on passenger side of engine usually bright chrome not gas exhaust one under valve cover. it takes 10 mm socket 1 bolt. turn to right and pull out.
garages were telling me it may be timing chain or out of time crankshaft or engine rebuild it was that valve.

I know you said you have a slow internet connection so it's out of the question but this is one reason why a livestream could be beneficial to you. You could have a small team of armchair experts or better research the issue with you and they might find a known good waveform for you or catch something you missed or do other helpful things.
My internet has been bad for a while but fixed now so i am catching up with YT videos, otherwise i would have commented much sooner about this.
Either way, very interesting video and thank you for taking the time to record these!

I got a 2006 Colorado, cylinder 5 misfires when idling but at 1000rpm or driving it won't miss a beat. I hooked computer and watched it while driving. Won't misfire at all. I've done plugs, switched coils, compression test and vacuum test, even cleaned the VVT solenoid. Fuel treatment etc. Let it idle and check engine light comes on. Drive and let a couple cycles go by, it'll go off till u idle again

Looking forward to the repair. this is quite a problem!
At first, I was thinking CKP Sensor, then I though Camshaft Sensor, but then you got the readings.
I am barely watching this series as I have been busy, and am just about ready to binge watch this for the solution! Good to be able to watch an honest mechanic! Most guys would have sent it out the door!

These trucks are such crap. Cheap control arms that go bad all the time, cooling system issues, HVAC issues, O2 sensor sensor issues, over-engineered timing chain design. Total monstrosity. Definitely avoid these trucks. The V8 version fared a bit better from what I hear, and the pre-'06 models seem to be the worst. But don't buy a Colorado: )

Sucks you couldnt get a break on checking another vehicles cam and crank signal but heh youll get another one to do and youll know just how to do it. Should be able to buzz through that one. Job security. I will say since the variable valve system hit the auto market it sure has added a whole new problem to deal with in these newer cars.

Now this is a REAL mechanic. Most tech's would just throw parts at it and see if one sticks. I've worked at GM dealerships for 30 years(bodyshop)and I can tell you for sure there's nobody there that does this kind of diagnoses. What ever you charge isn't enough.
