42: 22 I have a 2010 Hummer H3 - 5 cylinder - the same engine that you have here - I need to replace the front plate because I broke off one of the bolts to the water pump inside the engine block. It is the exact same job that you are doing here - do you have an advice or warnings? Other than the seal - was it hard to get the pulleys back on? Were there any issues I should be aware of? It looks like there are bolts on the bottom of the front plate. is that true? Thanks

So, essentially this GM engine (and car) has a built in lifetime. If the tensioners, chain and actuator are worn, the car is an economic total loss. Good thing they all kind of failed at the same time. That is good engineering (and good commercial engineering. Good for the shareholders of GM. From the customer's point of view, it is sick. And that is why people buy Honda, Kia and what not.

Its ridiculous also why they even bother using a bicycle chain to time a friggin engine. Years ago a chain was used(commonly duplex) normally to be service free. And i mean service free. never had to be looked at throughout the engines whole life. They would be better using a bloody belt instead. so as u know u have to change it at intervals. less labour as well!

That is without a doubt the worst designed engine i have ever seen. Even old british leyland engines were better designed than this CRUD! lol
Thin walled timing chain covers that flex like hel etc. lucky a piece didnt break off when trying to remove this in last video.

Once I saw what a timing change on this engine involves, I stopped looking at GM products. You got to be insane to design a motor this way. All the front junk must come off first, then you got to drop the tranny to replace the balancing chain in the back.

I made a piston stop out of an old spark plug and threaded rod. #1 cyl turn clockwise till stop. Mark the position on crankshaft to block. turn counterclockwise to stop (gently as not to jump chain. mark position. half way between marks is TDC.

Great work Eric. You are the best on these videos. I hope you continue your alliance with You Tube videos. They helped me tremendously on my son's Chevy Colorado I-5 cylinder head replacement. What a mess on timing chain replacement. Thank you.

I have a question. I have a 2010 colorado 2. 9 I get the odd engine stall or purge. The truck only has a 169, 000kms driving nicely since new. No engine noise sounds quiet no ticking or anything. Code p0017-00
