Unfortunately the customer bit off more than he could chew. I will give him a 'G' (good) for effort, but with all the loose or missing parts, connections, etc. it is hard to imagine why he attempted the job in the first place. If there is a problem with things coming apart, there may be a problem with things going back. If you have all the tools you need (in addition to the expertise) go ahead & attempt the job. It appears he missed the crankshaft mark - a critical omission. For all you DIYers out there (of which I am one) make sure you do your homework before you start the job. Pandora always seems to wait for the unsuspecting that thinks he can do what the more experienced can do. Mr. O is the perfect example of a highly skilled technician. I watch his videos because I know there are things I do not know. I am impressed by his talent & knowledge. You go Mr. O!

Who did he have working on it and to leave all the bolts loose? Was it a Brownie Troop working on their Mechanical Engineering Merit Badge? Little girls never tighten things enough. didn't he know that?
I only allowed ONE DIY screwup in my shop. . only one in 50 years. and I can still remember the owner crying about the high cost from me because he had already done it and he knew how easy it was to work on.
Never again! All the crying and begging! A bad taste like that lasts a long time! When I got other DIYs. I always sent them to the dealership. they deserved the punishment.

I messed up my timing marks the first TWO times on my Dodge Neon. Got it right on #3 (and #2 engine. It's been running like a champ ever since. Got it running again at 62, 300 miles and I just turned over 139, 000 today.
I cannot stress enough - crank the engine by hand through two cycles and recheck your marks.
As for the loose/missing bolts, if I were having a mechanic check my work, yes, I'd leave stuff loose or out. It's less stuff he has to dig through (and charge me for time) to get to the problem.

He likely did NOT send the heads out to a machine shop during the DIY job. That would have reconditioned the heads to like new condition and would have discovered any bent valves or cracks in the cylinder heads and any warp would have been machined out of the heads. Some people falsely use the words blown head gasket. Head gaskets don't blow, cylinder heads warp over time and once it's beyond spec's, it needs to be machined back to perfectly flat.

Some people should not be allowed to have tools. I have rebuilt the top half of many engines. Always had heads checked, always turned over by hand first. Always fired right up. Maybe this owner should get a haynes or chilton book on the vehicle to give him a clue on what he is doing. The old Hondoo is a hondont.

I would pull both heads just to protect myself. Explanation: With all of the loose, missing screws and bolts seen so far I would not assume anything done so far was done properly. If I was going to have my fingerprints on this job I would want to insure it was done to my standards.

Yeah trying to save some money and end up spending a bunch of more money if you going to replace a new engine put in new hoses your ass will be back under there putting it on because that is going to blow faster than anything is going to happen on the engine probably that's it

There isnt a mechanic making comments here that hasnt made a costly mistake.
The owner of this van has probably saved himself thousands over the years by doing his own maintenance.
It just happened that this one didnt go well.

I'd call the owner and see if he wants me to do it, Put it back together or leave it as is. and box the parts. If he's going to do it himself you saved him a lot of time and work by partially dismantling it already.

oh man. hope you got paid for this job. I'm a DIY'r, but you do it right or not at all. I get the feeling he cheaped out on his job, got sloppy on his job, therefore, might not want to pay da'man who did his job right.
