Chevy Suburban 5. 7: Crank No Start Part II

In a previous video I had a look at a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban that was towed in for a no start. It didn't take long to find out that the distributor gear was stripped out. I picked up a brand new one and it is time to get it fixed up

Cam offset usually calls for +/ -2 IIRC, so you're well within specs. .
I had a 2000 Astro Van 4. 3 that had a CAL/EPA pinned distributor - in that it could NOT be turned. For years we suffered with 18. 6 MPG whereas when we had an earlier Vortec 4. 3 Central Injection in a G10 with a raised roof and that got 23. 5 all day long!
I pulled that distributor lock pin, trimmed the hold down clamp until I could rotate the distributor and set it at +4 degrees BTDC.
The gas mileage jumped up to 24. 6 immediately. and that's where it's been for the past 12 years.
Your Chevy likely has a very badly stretched chain and I'd have gone +10 BTDC to help compensate.

I replaced the lower intake manifold on my 1999 Suburban. I lined up the timing marks on the balancer and the front of the engine and the rotor was pointing to #1 on the distributor cap. The truck will crank and almost start. I didn't find any codes when I attached my scan tool. The only thing I can reckon is the rotor wasn't exactly pointing to #1 and I'm still off a tooth or two on the distributor. I'll find out tomorrow. Keep up the great work.

just got done installing a new distributor in a S
-10 pickup. ended up with the money light coming on and a cam/crank correlation code. messed with it a little then ended up pulling the distributor back out. low and behold, a new distributor from naper, as you'd call it, had the gear 180 degrees out. removed roll pin turned gear, installed dist. no more problem. guess it pays to look over parts darn good before installing them

I got a similar problem with the starting on my 99 suburban and timing is good fuel pump is working the timing gear is in good shape it was starting fine a couple days ago and right now when I timed it again the notch on the balancer and the timing over are just 1/16 away from being right on each other but still won't run but does turn over

. unrelated, but at 7: 27. see that fuel gauge quivering and unsteady. wonder what causes that. mine does that, and sometimes goes to empty, then quivers around between 1/4 to 3/4 full, then sometimes shows past full. hard to tell how much fuel you really have. any ideas. sending unit, fuel gauge, or something else.

So my truck has the same engine and on a cold start there is an awful grinding noise similar to when you hold they key in the cranking position too long. The starter was replaced when it died and i still have the same problem. Any ideas on what it could be. It does sound like it comes from the starter area.
