I always love these kinds of videos.
I am not a mechanic - I'm an IT guy. But I love the approach and the totally different genre you're in. Gives me time to relax.
Additionally, I learn something along the way in terms of troubleshooting AND about cars.
Thanks for publishing this video and showing us NOT that you're a dummy, but how fast a wrong assumption can lead to wasted time and an inconclusive diagnosis.
You fixed it - but how? We will never know. I had that happen to me some times. I fixed stuff and never knew what was wrong to begin with because I meddled with stuff I shouldn't be meddlin' with.
Keep up the amazing work.
Wish I had a shop like yours where I live. Awesome, humble and out there to fix stuff - not to grab the money and run.

Well here you have it folks. I know many of you think I don't make mistakes so I feel I need to make some videos to prove you wrong. I make many of them and I am 100% sure as long as I am on this side of the sod I will make many more. In this video and diag my biggest mistake was making assumptions and not gathering the easy low hanging fruit first. I had no reason not to believe the test results the customer had provided with me with but as you seen in the end of this video it bit me. Easy 5 min diag took me the long way around and cost noting more than some extra time. No harm no foul at the end of the day.

Do you know what humble pie is. It s made from humbles, humbles are the bits that are left over after have used the liver etc from the animal not the stomach that is tripe al the intestines
Tripe and onion was a staple here in Derbyshire UK we use to have tripe boilers brown the road
Never mind as I was an industrial sparks with old drawings for big machines and have lost my way more than once, my standard method is to use the voltage that the circuit uses to test with, split the circuit in the middle test there, that gave direction, split again, carry on til QED

Haha, Eric O, I feel your pain, trusting customer information can sometimes lead you down the garden path. Currently working on a Holden (Chevy) Cruze used car from a local Nissan dealer, they want me to confirm their diagnosis of a PCM that is kaput, what they neglected to tell me is they had replaced the fuse box previously, I chased my tail for about two hours trying to find why the PCM wasn't being powered up. I eventually found the missing PCM relay in the used fuse box
My mistake was not asking what other work had been done.

Around 12: 40 - I really hate when wires changes colors on their way between two points. It just makes things a lot harder to figure out.
With the dirt in the washer fluid tank I might even expect that it was a piece of dirt was sticking in the pump and therefore it did work when tested by the other person and then it got some dirt into it causing it to stick and no longer work and possibly die. So a flush of the washer fluid tank might have been in order here. Did some brickhead fill DEF in the washer fluid container?

I think I have a good one, I assumed the machine shop tested a crankshaft before and after regrinding for cracks, bad assumption, 2 weeks to the day, the crankshaft broke, normal driving, nothing untoward, knew the customer well, ate a 400 dollar crankshaft r&r, NEVER assume anything, that job was 40 years ago, hence the cheap price, ate jam sandwiches and humble pie that week, a jam sandwich is two pieces of bread jammed together.

As an electronic technician for over 30 years. Yes you can go the wrong direction at times. My best tip for electrical problems is start in the middle, and then work to the fault by dividing the direction in half. There are times it is a learning experience and there is no way you can charge for the time you spent on the repair. one of the things about owning your own business.

That's the worst chasing tails I have a theorie that the guy lost count what he changed or installed after giving the car to you. This lead to wrong conclusion in the end. Like always double check and just in case your diagnosis doesn't match have the costumers findings in the back ground just in case. This is sometimes one of does day's where you think oh boy.

Dude mistakes are not that bad if you solve the problem in the end and admit you messed up but made it good, its when people make mistakes and then make the problem a whole lot worse then cover it up and deny they did anything,
And i do the same go to the failed component and track back from there or its a needle in a hay stack,
