GMC Terrain: Rear Pad Slap

GMC Terrain: Rear Pad Slap

I replace the rear pads only on a GMC Terrain. This may be common practice in the non rust belt but, it hardly ever happens here. Anyhow Enabran: Against my better judgement back in 2008 I purchased a brand new GM Pickup right in the middle of the General Motors Bankruptcy. Back in those days GM purchased the cheapest crappiest brakes and rotors After three years the rust and metal was pealing off those OEM rotors. To be fair up my way they are always pounding that NYS Thruway with road salt every time the temperature goes below 32F. When I replaced them I purchased Chinese ten year warranty rotors and ceramic pads off E-bay. The metal mix for the Chinese rotors is much better than it use to be. Where the old pads wore the OEM rotors these Chinese rotors look good as new after eight years and they dont flash rust if you dont drive the truck up to a week. Most all rotors come out of the China foundries but some are better than others. Thanks for the link for the Brake Caliper file. Always wanted one.

It's a really hot day and this penguin is having car trouble, so he takes it into a garage.
The penguin asks, How long will it be?
The mechanic says, Just a few minutes.
So the penguin decides to go get an ice cream at the grocery store across the street.
When the penguin gets there he climbs inside the big freezer door and starts to eat ice cream.
Three hours go by before the penguin looks at his watch and jumps out of the freezer and races back to the garage.
With ice cream all over his face and his stomach he says, So, how's my car?
The mechanic comes walking out wiping his hands on a rag and says, Looks like you blew a seal.
The penguin says, No, no, no, I was just eating ice cream.

I did the brakes on my wife's CRV and one of the pads wasn't sliding freely (Napa pads as well, not a sponsor. I cleaned the brackets off till they were shiny and then some and still the darn pad wouldn't slide. Every YouTube mechanic says never grind your pads to make them fit so I didn't dare, or maybe I did just a little. Now I see you say sometimes there's a burr on the pad you have to file off or the paint is too thick. I wish I saw this video sooner. I'm gonna get me some Brake Caliper files, filing the brackets stinks with a regular file!

In 50 years of doing Japanese cars I never needed to burp a caliper boot. However I always clean off the crud from them and apply a small amount of syl-glyde to the end of the piston and the boot. You'd think that grease would be a grit and salt magnet, but when water splashes it, all that grit and salt disappears. I've only needed to replace one caliper piston and it had 80k miles of Chicago salt winters before I bought it. Wish I could say the same for brake pads and rotors!

The other day I get a call for Roadside Assistance, from this Canadian guy riding a Snowmobile. Says he was scooting along when the engine stopped, and he went over the handle bars head first into a snow drift. I popped up the seat to take a look, and there was oil everywhere. I go and find the guy, and I said gee's fella, looks like you've blown a seal! He instantly looked real nervous, then wiped his mouth. Then looking at his glove, he says Oh, no thats just snow.

Lol, thought when the title read pad slap, you were referring to a broken pad/caliper bracket with the pad metal slapping the caliper bracket, and making a slapping/ banging sound when changing gears, or start/stopping. I just call this a pad change. I like to hit my rotors with a scotch pad (not in a whizzer) to aid in seating the new pads, and remove any crap. and clean with brake cleaner of course.

I like that brake lubricant. I've just used plain antisieze for years since I could use it on slide pins and lug nuts too but that stuff probably holds up better on the back of a pad. Thanks for sharing.
Whats the difference between a dirty bus stop and a lobster with boobs? One is a crusty bus station and the other is a busty crustacean.

This video hit me so hard this morning I couldn't stop laughing I was checking my pad thickness before my sticker is due and sure enough that last mechanic that touched my car only did a 3 wheel brake job average of 7mm and then the left rear wheel a lonley 1mm so now I'm going to be that guy getting a single pair of pads

Here's a baby joke: Q. How do you fit 10 babies in a glove box? A. La Machine (say it like your French)
I believe there were commercials for a fancy blender or food processor on TV in the '70's, I've heard and repeated this and everyone got it, sound about right for a 6th grade joke.
