Honda Odyssey: Power Tailgate Stopped Working Shade: Good advice and troubleshooting about checking a circuit under load. Although using one's body is not advised. Especially taking that current right across the chest. Even I as an electronics tech can be fooled by that one. Usually we see power supplies that wont take a load. But, in the end your deductions are correct. One other thing, That connector is probably just for assembly purposes. I would have opened it up and inspected it and yes may be spliced the whole cable since the car will not be assembled again and is thus not necessary.

I recently took my truck up to a Napa Center where I have had my other truck with great success I felt that I had went far enough with this truck that it needed to be done on the computer to find out what was what I got a diagnosis of broken valve springs and a shitload of codes which I think maybe they had created some of these but needless to say I pulled my valve covers off and guess what no broken Springs. The next time I have a problem I believe I'm going to throw the truck on a trailer and drive from Ohio to New York to Eric O to get the real Masters decision on what the hell is wrong with this truck. Running very poorly still drivable but very poorly. Anyway Eric love all your videos Man you seem to always come up with the answer, many blessings to you and yours give Mrs o a big hug she's the bomb!

Said it before, say it again. You re a good trouble shooter and would have done well in the phone company. The only thing is with the phone company you don t get diagrams, you get to open everything you can see and find everything you don t see to open it. If it can be. Your water and salt, rats, squirrels and mice problems on vehicles are the same we deal/dealt with in the field.
And like you, we had trouble shooters that find and fix the problem then those that did hack jobs you hated to follow after. Color code meant nothing to them.
Getting old does suck. Buy reading glasses by the dozens and spread them about. I can see a flea on a dog a quarter mile away if I were looking for one. But the words I m typing right now 20 away I have no idea if I m spelling right or not without them.

Weird things do happen. I had a M&M drop in the female connector on my seat belt and it wouldn't lock. I was on a trip, stopped in to the Ford dealer in Maine and the tech found it in about 5 minutes, he crushed it with a screw drive quick blast with cleaner and I was happly on my way. Nice dealer he didn't charge anything. The dealer I bought the car from would make me wait for the next opening in the schedule and would have charged me the minimum hourly rate for diagnostic. Not that he didn't deserve it but at the time it was 96 and it was the 4th Ford I bought from him.

The mini-lesson on not always trusting a meter hit close to home this week. Customer states no 3rd brake light. I pull the bulb and check for voltage at the contacts with my meter and see battery voltage. Then I loaded a new bulb in the parts cannon and it still doesn't work. Then I back-probe the connector with my meter and plug the bulb back in and my voltage drops to 0. Long story short, the bulb was fine and I found a wiring issue was the real culprit.

Hi Eric, my mom, sistuh, and I, are coming up in early September. Skipping the Ring of Fire this year at the Sacandaga Reservoir. If you've seen one Ring of Fire, you've seen them all. I'm hoping to cast a few lines into the reservoir for some small mouth. My mom's place is in the Town of Day, just to the south of Northville, on the South shore road. Anyway, I hope all is well. Please say hello to the lovely Mrs. O. Thanks for another one.

Eric, I ll be on the lookout for Green snot in my wiring. The money shot we saw was fine. We know you try to get it for us. We should try and get our animals together for a shake the coke bottle spray fight. Oddly enough, black coffee also gets sticky for some reason. Glad my daughters Honda Pilot has hinged doors instead of the slidders. Those audio only cameo s of Mrs. O are just barely good enough. We need the Beauty shots haha!

At _twelve_ years old this corrosion is not an issue. Every single machine _will_ wear out over time. Honda promises that the connector in question will last _three_ years. This connector lasted _twelve_ years, _four_ times the promise. Thus this failure is not an issue. As Eric O says, this vehicle is near the end of its life. Thus there will be one failure after another, until one is so severe the vehicle is not repairable.

Another totally awesome troubleshooting job. Thanks Eric for going through that. I have a question. Obviously you spend hours tracking down broken wires and other problems that require a great deal of time to repair. Have you ever had a customer say to you you charged me for Hours of labor and I SAW THE VIDEO, you fixed it in a half an hour I want a refund because YOU overcharged me. ?

After watching your videos for a couple of years I detect a pattern on most electrical issues on cars from the PRNY. They are invariably caused by either salt corrosion or rodents. Makes me glad I live in Florida. No salt on roads here and though we have rodents they don't seem to make nests in warm automobiles often (they prefer cool spots)

Nice tracking down the culprit. Not being the shop and assessing the risks of doing so, would it have been a good idea to hose some of those wires/connections down with WD40 or better? At least the speed of corrosion would slow down since you were already in there and had access. Customer approved of course.

Great diagnostics, like it. Being a technician myself, sitll learning from your video's, thanks for that. One thing tough, twice you mentioned to get Mrs O in for help and you didn't, then you sneak out to have lunch with her, think of the people you dingdong, we need Mrs O every now and then

Hey Eric doesn t the power probe 4 have an internal latch setting for power out. I m pretty sure it does I ll check when I get to work but I thought that was a feature on that one. I have the 4 and the 3 and honestly I grab the 3 more often for whatever reason habits
reply

Eric, dont tease us by saying, Let me get the lovely Mrs O and then say no, I can do it with the scan tool. We want Mrs O, not the scan tool! Seriously, we love the banter between you two. You yell and curse at your tools but they dont talk back.
