Chevy/GMC - 4L60E Transmission Replacement - Part III Brian: Last winter I changed out the 4L80 transmission in my 04 Sierra 2500 4x4. I don't have the luxury of a lift so I single handedly did the entire job on the garage floor. I'm an old man of 66 years and quicky found that I don't have the strength of my former 20-year-old body! LOL It was entertaining watching your progress. You do great work! BTW, I had a valve drop into cylinder #7 on in our Chevy moho while on a trip to Texas. Tore up the bore, piston, and head chamber. That was a Jasper engine with less than 10K miles, but the company wouldn't cover the engine due to the expiration date had lapsed. We ended up selling the coach while parked at a service garage and took a huge loss.

Similar model to my plow truck, except mine is 90% rust held together with salt. It leaves a pile of debris wherever it is parked, especially if it rains. I would get a new one if the prices were not so crazy right now. The off-road package is useful on the plow truck, considering some of the things I have run over that were buried in the snow, and the occasional unintended off-roading as is the norm for plowing at least the way I do it. That auto switch works better if the truck is in neutral, but it could be busted, too.
I thought I needed a new tranny in mine last year, but after towing it to the shop, it started working again and we couldn t find one local anyway. I went ahead and used it the rest of the season, no problem, and used the truck over the summer without issue. It shifts with the occasional slam and takes a few RPM to get moving, but it has not left me walking, yet. I will keep Jasper on speed dial. Thanks for the tip. I might need it before the white stuff starts falling again.
Do you have a video for replacing the antilock system and some things to look out for on these models? It looks deceptively simple, and I suspect it is not just the pump since the truck is so old and worked so hard. The brakes kind of help, so I can throw some extra parts at it to be proactive. It has a bit of suspension work due on it too. Once I tear into it, I want to do it all that one time it is out of service.

First off, thanks for the great video. I've been subbed for a couple of years now and very much appreciate your approach to repairs. You are informative and easy to follow. Many others are too but you have a certain way about things that just makes it better, (for me at least. You have helped me do a lot of my own repairs and repairs to other peoples vehicles (mostly family. So I'm curious about something you said here Mr. O. I have changed my T-case fluid on my 2003 Chevy Z71 and my repair manual called for regular ATF. My question is, is the Auto Trak 2 a better fluid or a fluid recommendation change that was maybe done after i bought my repair manual? If this is the case, I need to get the ATF out of my T-case before it does damage. If you or anyone on here can send me the right direction, I'd much appreciate it. Thanks.

My 1998 Ford Explorer, from day-one, never down-shifted correctly at speed when trying to pass or enter highway traffic. At 40K miles she started shuttering and my local mechanic recommended a rebuilt Jaspar tranny. That tranny was better than the new one the vehicle came with, and lasted 200K miles before the vehicle was totaled in an accident. Jaspar is quality and better than new in most cases, as they apply updates that may not have existed in the original. I wanted to visit Jaspar in Indiana when we were at the Indy 500 this year, but it didn t happen. Another great video series Eric O. BTW, you and Mrs. O are quite the archers

Eric, we had to replace our garage van 4L 80E for typical lock up Convertor problems slippage very common failure with 108K on the clock. I bought from my local GM store for 3, 500. 00 with convertor! 2009 Savanna Van! This failure is still happening in 2017 2& 4 wheel trucks! 3 yr. Warranty makes me feel a little better! No bull if a problem comes up! If so, take to any GM dealer, they don t try to fix in house, full free replacement ( in writing ) Still should not fail with low K s, & not cheap! Good vid Eric, as usual!

I used to hang out at the charities auction and buy out of the deadline unless I saw a drive-thru under 200 and nobody wanted it and pick a part was slow on the bed yeah I'd get motorhomes for 75 stretch limos for 50 forklift for 50 scissor lift for 200 and Mercedes jags BMWs all for under 200 the only thing cost me a fortune was a 500 bronco to 85 and boy that I love that thing I'll be fixing things like you're doing now I used to do but now I'm 64 wish and I hadn't got rid of my forklift and my scissor lift

Agree that Jasper is a good brand. You get what you pay for, as they say. However, was told at GM training in transmission class by instructor that you should not paint an automatic transmission as this tends to trap heat because the case cannot radiate heat away as well as the bare, semi porous, surface of the aluminum case. This is surely true of aluminum engine components as well. Of course a remanufactured bare aluminum case is not as pretty as a new one, or a painted one. But it will run cooler.

Valvoline makes the fluid that goes in those transfer cases in the aftermarket. I know because my 07 Ram has the automatic transfer case in it. That's the fluid the Dodge dealer got me for my truck. It said compatible with GM autotrac on it. I have used Jasper Products also with good results. I got to tour their two facility's in Indiana. They flew five of us down there in their own plane. gave us the tour, fed us breakfast and lunch. Very impressive place.

One of the great American ripoffs. 4WD!
People gotta have four wheel drive on their pickups, get charged thousands of dollars as an option, pay thousands of dollars to repair and then use it three times in the life of the vehicle.
I had a two wheel drive 3/4 ton pickup, drove it to 210, 000 miles and only missed wanting 4WD once while trying to pull a travel trailer up an incline, at an angle, on a muddy, slippery surface.

Eric I bet very few, there are some, would go to the trouble to make sure the correct fluid, all the plastic clips, every bracket is tightened, all the little things that are a pain in the rear end to do are completed. The folks around Avoca are, or should be honored to have you in their midst! AND that truck should be a fluid film commercial, my gawd that thing looked like it was from Arizona.
That is remarkable.

i used to do transmissions for a living, i know a few shortcuts and a few things you forgot to mention, but overall great videos like always, i was thinking to myself those crosmember bolts go the other way before you mentioned someebody getting triggered. ive done it a time or two, i call them bag catchers, they always catch the loose grocery bags in the street. thank you for the great content, i have been a follower for years.

So I m leaving a comment cause you asked so nicely Mr. O. Excellent three-parter my man. Looking forward to an engine rebuild series whenever you have the opportunity. BTW-I bought a South Main Auto hoodie from your store and the graphic on the back only lasted a couple of wash cycles. Too bad because it s a really cool design. Still keeps me warm though. Anyway thanks for all of the entertaining videos!

If you need a transmission repair. I always go to Cottman's TRANSMISSION. They are coast to coast and won't leave you waiting weeks or several days like these part-changing guys will do. My 4 x 4 was in and out wholly rebuilt good as new, two days that's it. I had 255, 000 on that old transmission. Excellent service and I wasn't called a bothersome you tuber.
