Jeep Front U-Joints And An Interesting Day At The Shop Bill: We're glad you didn't have cancer and die on us. Shaving one day about 35 years ago, I noticed a slight swelling next to my nose. Further examination revealed tiny blisters, not much bigger than a period on this page, across the area. A visit to a dermatologist followed, who immediately identified basal cell skin cancer. I told him to burn it away, and not worry about the scaring. He refused, saying it was too large, so I had to go to a plastic & reconstructive surgeon who operated. My face was cut open for a week, with the final surgery getting delayed by a hurricane! Murphy's Law. But after it was all over, you can't tell anything was done. So consider yourself lucky. Hope that makes you feel better, since it could have been a lot worse.

Wow! In over 50 years of repairing vehicles I have never torched out a universal cross! At 68 I am still learning! A little heat is ok by me but a full melt event I have never done! Hahaha!
This should be the flames and fire episode!
Glad ya saved the town too! Good job on the Jeep and the Laundry! Happy 4th to Y'all! Cheers,
Rick
P/S. Acid brushes were originally from plumbing. used to apply solder Flux to pipe joints. My grandpa had a brush stuck in his tin can of Flux always ready for any copper pipe repair!

it seems like everytime i try an use a hammer instead of my bench vise, one or two needles dislodge from the cap. infact im so paranoid because its happened multiple times, i start both caps at the same time so the u joint can hold the needles in as i drive the caps in at that point, hammer all the way. then i hit the ears to releave binding. did my superduty dana 60 front end recently.

Had a ball joint i was trying to replace but couldn't get the sucker to press out so i took it to my buddy. Said buddy was a few beers in and torched that baby too much launching the ball joint outta the cup into the floor a few inches from my foot then it flew to the dark depths of his barn. I learned a very valuable lesson that day. lol

I'mma just ask. WHY IN THE WORLD would any engineer design parts for a car with freakin' twelve point head bolts!
You'd think they'd know better. Bad enough roundin' off the regular head bolts, but those, Torx and Allens need to never be a thing. Redesign your part, geez.
And I'm not even in the rust belt, so there. :p

Never even thought about using a torch to remove a cross out of a U-Joint!
Was heating up brake lines on the car in my profile picture. Apparently, the brake hose was plugged on one end! Should have heard that hose POP when it reached the critical temperature! I was ready for the pop one the second side!

My brother is the only one in the family who we knows has a brain! He had the front of his skull removed to remove a benign growth that was causing pressure and pushing his eye out!
He has 4 titanium plates with 4 titanium screws each. He asked the Dr if he could have a screw. 80 each!

Funny, I had one of those chicken fat knobbydos on the back of my head too, in exactly the same spot. It lived there for 20+ years and helped to keep my hat on, but my wife (who used to cut my hair) hated it and called it my little brother. Anyways, I had it excised 8 or 9 years ago.

My buddy has one of those fatty deposits on his back. It's huge but doctor says nothing to be concerned about.
I have a thumbnail sized one on the back of my leg.
I guess it's our body's way of depositing cholesterol in one spot other than the heart arteries.

Such a day! Heroism is just another everyday occurrence in Avoca, NY! I learn something every time I watch one of your jobs. A cutting torch to remove the last bit of broken bolt! Who would'a thought! May you have a thorough recovery from your Fat Removed From Head surgery.

I live in the south and the undercarriage of my Jeep does not have those issues. They are called acid brushes because plumbers use them to apply an acid flux to copper tubing when soldering.
I had the same kind of bump behind my ear. The doctor called it pimple popping.

Eric, i believe you are the best automechanic out there your teaching lessons are the best. Thank you for saving the laundromat it would be catastrophic. You did your good deed to the owner and the town. The repair was done first class. Great video take care, thanks

U-joints, fluid film, torches, drill, an actual torque wrench, medical procedure discussion, and fire fighting in the same video! You set the bar kinda high in this video Mr. O. How are you going to top this? Speedy recovery and thanks for saving the laundry mat!
reply

They call them acid brushes because plumbers have used them for years to apply acid flux to copper fittings before soldering. With the advent of PEX pipe, that's diminished copper soldering greatly, though it's still done to a lesser degree when remodeling.

WWII Submarines made 750 gals of fresh water/day, 500 of which went to the engines - You knew it is time to take a shower when you are going down the passage way and smelled someone coming up behind you. Looking back to see who it is and there is no one there.

Question is the torch faster? Seems like pounding them out, would be faster, easier, cooler? (ie, less problems handling the parts, cooler. Not more awesome, cooler) (at least in the past, I haven t had any problems. Just curious) (never owned a torch)

I'm not good with listening to people talk about things like that. I skipped a bunch of it. Hope things are good. I'm glad you didn't record it. Also in the future please don't go into to much detail or there's a good chance I could pass out.

Don't let him fool you the stitches are from where he ignored Mrs. O and she whacked him a little too hard in the back of the head with the nearest wrench.
Nah, she seems like a sweet lady and would not whack him unnecessarily.
