How Would You Fix This Rotted Out Nissan?
video description
Once you replace that rear subframe a thorough douching with Fluid Film would seem to be in order if the owner is up for it

Looking forward to the subframe swap on this! Every time you do a video showcasing the Rustbelt Effect, it reinforces my desire to live no further north than a mid-Atlantic state. my wife told me plenty of horror stories involving the longevity (or lack thereof) of vehicles in Ohio, but being from Texas, I always assumed that the damage was mostly limited to body panels because I never saw this type of rot in my years in Texas. You've definitely made me a believer in annual undercoating!

Given that if your 2021 and newer Kia needs an engine. you can't get one, and if your 2022 Hyundai needs a window replaced. you can't get one. and even if you have repaired your credit from 2009! you would be looking at 10, 000 over msrp for a CHEEP vehicle at 70, 000+ and trying to swing the cat at those payments. Sick as it is, fix it till it cant be fixed no more for older cars is MORE realistic, doable and cheaper.

No one knows how to build them like they used to. Salt water bath before assembly. Or is the paint mixed with brine. Unbelievable.
I'm in Cleveland part of the rust belt and It's a shame we allow these vehicles on the market. But. on the other hand with out them there would be less work for shops like yours. Keep em coming.

Getting a used complete rear subframe from a southern state is the way to go. It will add many more years of life to the vehicle compared to a couple A arms. And if you can convince the customer to cough up for a fluid film coating before install the rear suspension parts (excepting shocks) should never need replaced again.

I don t know how it s possible, but my 14 Ram 1500 just rolled over 104, 600 today, and its 97% rust free, living in northwest indiana, land of salt. I ve never undercoated it but I get weekly underbody flushes from the local carwash and it s held up well. I haven t watched this yet but I know what we re in for

I only work on garbage. If it were mine, I d drop the subframe, take it apart, patch it back together with some steel and the welder, than put it back together, soak it in Cosmoline, and hope I never had to look at it again. But like I said, I only work on garbage. And my time isn t worth anything.

Question for you real mechanics: I do a lot of my own repairs and maintenance, but I don't know if this one is possible. 2011 Cadillac DTS with blown head gasket. Can a fat 60 year old guy with a bad back do it? Or should I pay the 4k to have the shop do it? Thank you for your insight.

How the people of New York tolerate that is beyond me. The sheer cost, in dollars, to consumers must be HUGE for 'unnecessary' early decay of vehicles. I understand the advantages of salt but would people really lose their minds to find a substitute? Sand? gravel? IDK. just amazing.

God Eric you have to move out of that place and come on down south, The only time a car should look that bad is if the owner parked it in the ocean for a few years! You can have a shop policy where you flat out refuse to work on cars where the owners park them in the ocean!

Sounds like you got it figured out. Sucks to fix a turd like this. But you're right. Why slap on new parts when you can get the entire thing used for much easier and cheaper. Not like it'll be around for 10 more years at this rate anyways.

I'm a tech at a Nissan dealer and still see these a half a dozen times a month. These lower links are actually covered by Nissan due to manufacture defect. This is how they always come in. New links on both sides and an alignment.

Everyone saying scrap it must not be from salt belt. I d recommend the full subframe and let em know that there will most likely be further things that will need attention once the subframe is fully removed. That s what I d do

That's not terrible for up here. A new subframe will keep this car going for years to come. It's a fairly common repair here in NY. If I remember correctly there was a recall on something with the rear suspension on these cars.

2015 isn't very old to see that kind of rust damage. Definitely should not be on the road in that condition. My 2015 Camry has less miles but is in great shape for living it's whole life not far away in Western NY.
