I am a Merc owner (w204 facelift wagon with a classic hood ornament, very highly specced) and I am not sure that it's the Mercedes executives or more like the general (taste of) the customers who are responsible for the recent demise of the brand. I know that recently (not this past year though: D) their numbers are supposed to way better, especially volume than 10-20 years ago, when Mercedes cars, including my old C-class used to be actually fairly reliable but from a technical point of view kinda obsolete and very conservative. For instance interior design, or using full telephone-like keyboards on the dash up until the mid-2010s, recycling a lot of knobs and controls etc. Pretty much like toyota, they used a part as long as they could to keep the costs down even if it already seemed very obsolete (e. g. footbrake e-brake in my car too) but it was cheap and reliable. And then, in the mid 2010s (w205 c-class and w213 e-class) is where they started a completely new direction, interiors became designwise day and night and insanely more modern, but at the same time they stopped recycling old parts, started overcomplicating things and started focusing only on sporty driving experience and the youth, hence that's what the market apparently wanted. Everybody today wants to be modern and sporty, and reliable but oldschool (grandpa-like) luxury is not in vogue any more. And now it's even worse with a full focus on the Chinese market, and i don't see how and when we would return to the original Mercedes values (as for instance it did happen with the w212 after the disastrous w210) in the late 2000s. A lot of classic Merc buyers, including me, won't even consider a modern Merc as they are unnecessarily overcomplicated and super high-tech, yes, but not reliable any more, which probably still makes financial sense for the company itself. Unfortunately.

Everybody is weight obsessed these days with cars and its usually the ones that drive proper old school race cars for the roads like fiesta's with a K&N or a polo GTI or some tripe like that. The backlash the new M5 got was staggering to see and quite laughable knowing 96 percent of the backlash was probably from people that have never been in anything with more than 200bhp and only remember how sports cars were from old top gear.

The only thing I don’t like about the E53 and all new AMG cars, that they are limited to 280 km/h top speed, even the S63 AMG with 800 hp is limited to 290, that is ridiculous. If I buy such a strong and expensive car, then 300 km/h is the minimum top speed, you get even 305 km/h top speed in a normal Audi RSQ8 SUV with 600 hp. It is so embarrassing, if you are sitting in your AMG limousine and you have to give way for an SUV.

I know what this AMG has that the M5 doesn't. A pathetic fake sound, taillights that look like fidget spinners. How pathetic can you get Mercedes has already copied the air intakes, the black chrome plating, the rims, and much more. Now they're even copying the inline six-cylinder. Mercedes really has no style or honor left. Why don't they just get a BMW 5 Series and stick a star on the hood Then it'll be easier.

Test drove one of these and could not believe how pathetically cheap the interior felt. The car was rattling on the test drive, too on a brand new car with 4 miles on the odometer. The battery was also completely drained so I couldn’t test the full experience and it was pretty dull, tbh. Ended up getting a 2025 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing instead for the same price they were asking for this E53.

I just got mine in alpine grey and 20 wheels. Looks simply gorgeous, and the build quality is excellent, finally back to Mercedes standards of years past. Comfortable enough and fast enough for American roads. Three cars in one - an EV, a luxury saloon and a sports car (when you dial up all the settings. Very satisfied so far. Will never consider current BMW products they all look atrocious!

Almost 2. 5 tonnes car with a 3. 0 L engine
Even with the help of the electric motors the performance of this car will be trash. Why even make this and market as AMG
No top end, average acceleration and no fun from the big IC engine.
Mercedes should just focus on pure luxury like Rolls Royce and forget about performance they are clearly lacking there.

The new MBUX assistant has a function that will detect when you are driving the car on your own and will consider you are talking to it when you speak. That's why it jumps in all the freaking time during the video. You can deactivate that with 2 clicks, but it looks like Matt didn't go through the dealership intro, did you

Not sure if it's me or the cars but there's just nothing exiting about most cars these days, i mean this is probably one of the most bland amg cars i have ever seen. This is the kind of car some company executive gets as a company car and nothing more, do you imagine this pulling up in a car meet and anyone even glance at it.

I love how you guys do your car reviews. But I've always hated one thing about them, its that you guys get fully speced out cars. Most people get around mid level trims and options. Hopefully in the future can you do maybe around mid trim cars with a normal amount of specs which an average buyer would pick.

Why oh why is the battery where it is in this car The M5 or the Volvo T8/Polestar 1 way of doing it is way superior dynamically right This has the same placement that made the Passat/Octavia hybrids disasters in the moose test with that rear pendulum weight (the height of which from the ground was the problem)

Why is the seatadjutment in the door wrong. in my opinion it is the only usable place! I want to adjust it while sitting in my normal position not bend forward and fiddeling somwhere under my leg. I would even prefer it moved entirely into the menue over placing it down at the side of the seat.

A 100 grand car but the head unit quality is like syhit, chery tiggo 8 csh uses snapdragon chipset and their screens has much thinner bezels. Can you imagine a chnese car priced only at 30-35g is better than 100 grand merc This also applied to other brands like beamer, Volks etc.

its a money company, the more money you thow at them the better the car will be, even if it has a high entry point. Always arrived with double the base price and you will walk away with what the car was intended to be. . and another thing, never mind about issues of depreciation)

That dash is frankly disgusting. It'll lose the oleophobic coating over time and will soon be full of fingerprints and look cheap.
I bet the engine is full of plastic stuffs as well such as a plastic oil sump and plastic engine mounts. This car won't last 10 years.

I find it annoying that mat almost seems to have set his mind not to like the car before he reviews it. And also said that it is annoying having the seat control on the door even though in all of the previous merc reviews, he preferred the controls on the door.

Car journalists are completely overpaid if they can't even find the button to turn off voice control. In a Mercedes, there's an Engine Sound Enhancement on/off option in the audio/sound menu. This turns off fake engine/exhaust noises.

Crazy you compare the M5 to this slow AMG boat. While we know the bmw with its claim HP is 717 hp with no fancy option like the merc to increase it from 585 to 617 also I know someone who Dyno test a stock m5 and it produced 800 hp
